Ruth Knight

November 9, 1925 to June 13, 2023

Passed away peacefully at Pleasantview Towers, with her daughter June by her side, on June 13, 2023, at the age of 97 years.

Ruth lived her life in St. John’s where as a young woman she worked as a saleslady for the London New York and Paris Dept. Store on Water St. It was there that she met her future husband Fred, a commercial artist, who often did advertising for the store. After marrying and raising her family, she returned to The London, and worked as a Department Manager and a buyer for the Lady’s Clothing. Eventually she moved to the Furniture Department, where she worked until the store closed. She then moved on as Assistant Manager at Pennington’s in the Avalon Mall. During the summer months she always enjoyed spending time at the family summer home at Neary’s Pond. In her later years she enjoyed reading, gardening and knitting, visits from family, neighbors and friends, and especially playing with Sue, her little cat. Chocolate was her very favourite treat, and fortunately she was able to enjoy eating it almost up to her final days.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Ada Barnes of St. John’s; husband Frederick W. Knight also of St. John’s; and daughter Karen Knight Nash Gower who resided in Nova Scotia.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Ada Elizabeth (Betty) Green of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia; daughter June Somerton (Gordon) residing in Clarenville; son F. Warren Knight of St. John’s; three grandchildren David Somerton (Joanne) residing in Logy Bay, Middle Cove; Sherril Inglis residing in New Brunswick; and Keely Nash of Nova Scotia; five great-grandchildren Evan and Lauren Somerton, and Victoria, Elizabeth and Ethan Inglis; her very dear best friend Norma Boone residing in St. John’s; and her wonderful neighbors Kevin and Bride Pynn; as well as other family, friends and neighbors.

As she wished, cremation has taken place and a committal service will be held on Wednesday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road with Father John Courage officiating.
