Obituary

Ruth M Goodland passed peacefully away on April 1st 2017 at the Health Science Centre, St. John’s, NL. following a brief illness. Ruth was predeceased by her mother Elsie Stirling Goodland, father, Rev. Joseph Goodland and brother Douglas Goodland. Growing up in Twillingate was a special part of Ruth’s life as she had many fond memories of her time with her cousins and cherished friends. She leaves to mourn, an extended family including the Stirling / Goodland families. Ruth often expressed her feelings of gratitude for the support that Geoff and his extended family provided to her throughout her life. Ruth also leaves behind wonderful and caring neighbours, including Andrea Crosbie, Ruth and Siegfried Lenser and the many supportive families that touched Ruth over her time on Downing Street. Ruth had a community of friends with special thanks to Angie Gibbons, Joyce King, Joyce Skanes, Elizabeth Blot, special cousin Margaret Manuel, life long friend Hetti Noel and companions at The Anglican Cathedral. A special thank you to caregiver Barbara Perran who became her friend and confidant over the past three years. In her working life, Ruth’s career as an Insurance Broker spanned over 35 years with Harvey’s and Crosbie’s Insurance. Throughout her life, influenced by the values instilled in her by her parents, Ruth always found time in service to others. In retirement, Ruth continued to lead a life of voluntarism including but not limited to The Gathering Place and The Anglican Cathedral. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home. Visitation Tuesday, April 4, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Service will be held on Wednesday April 5th 2pm at the Anglican Cathedral. Internment at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to The Gathering Place, Heavenly Creatures or a charity of your choice.

It has often been said that it takes a village to raise a child, however it can be said that it takes a good person to show us the way.

Ruth was a person who will long be remembered for her volunteer service at the Anglican Cathedral and beyond.
I met Ruth as a parishioner many years ago and admired how much she gave of herself over the years. She quietly went about helping wherever she could.
She was always pleasant and I enjoyed getting to know her.
In latter years I saw Ruth at the 8:00 am service until she was unable to attend for health reasons.
May Ruth rest in peace as it is a well deserved rest.

Our sympathy to the Goodland family, and friends of Ruth. Ruth volunteered with us at the Gathering Place.
She was a faithful and compassionate volunteer. May she rest in peace.
Sincerely
Sr. Regina Vickers
Sr. Dorothy Baird

Deepest sympathy, Ruth is in my thoughts and prayers
