Sam Hopley

Obituary

With broken hearts, we say goodbye to our Sam who passed peacefully on September 4, 2019 at the age of 27. Sam was a compassionate and loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson and cat-dad. He was bright and jovial, bringing his lopsided grin and enthusiasm wherever he went. He approached life with passion, whether he was brewing a decadent pour-over coffee, devouring science fiction novels or competing in a game of pool. He was finding success in his work life, advancing his career in banking. Beneath all this Sam struggled; he could not overcome his pain and he took his own life. We know Sam is at peace now.

Sam is predeceased by his loving grandparents Florence, Doug, Audrey and Alex, and his aunt Kristina. He will be eternally missed by his mother Sharon, father Dave, sister Joy (Michael) and nephew Maxwell. Also leaving to mourn his aunt Pamela (Todd), cousins Ayla, Mark and Claire and the extended Hopley family.

Friends and family are invited to gather at 7:30pm in Bannerman Park on the evening of Tuesday, September 10, 2019, to share memories of Sam.

Donations can be made in Sam’s memory to local community organization Thrive at www.thrivecyn.ca.

I was fortunate enough to meet your beautiful son twice since I moved back home. It was at Tavola and I was delighted to learn he was your son Sharon. On first impression I thought he was kind, genuine and sweet. Reading the messages of those who knew him better confirms what I felt. I hope you can find some comfort here.

David, Sharon, family and friends. It was very sad to hear of Sam’s death; and even sadder to realize what emotional pain he must have been experiencing. I know we only met you and your son on a few occasions; but we were very impressed with his good heart, his warm smile; and his personality. Our hearts go out to all of you and also to Sam’s close-knit group of friends, including our nephew Andrew, Ryan, Andrea and several others whose names I can not recall. To all of you, our deepest sympathy.

Sam was our go to guy at Chinched . He could engage in conversations about charcuterie ,and cheese that would make a Michelin starred chef envious.
Always pleasant , always laughing at my goofy jokes ,always kind and always unreservedly friendly .
He was a wonderful young man whom enthusiasm we will always miss.

I am so, so sorry to hear about Sam passing. I had the pleasure of working with Sam at RBC and loved how his personality brightened the Branch. He was so friendly, personable and easy to be around…..he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Dearest Sharon and Dave.
It is with great sadness to have heard of your son Sam’s passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences. My thoughts are with you. Love Anthony.

Although I have only known Sam since he moved into my apartment a couple months ago, I was terribly saddened to hear of his passing. He was always so friendly and full of life during our conversations whether it be in person or via text. He was a model tenant and I could have asked for no better, the respect he showed for myself and my home was impeccable. Prayers are with your family during this difficult time of loss.

I met Sam through my sisters Eliz and Vicky. Sam was always so friendly and pleasant when we visited the bank. I happened to see Sam a few days before he passed away. He was knelt down in front of Sobey’s, petting a dog and talking to the owner with a big smile on his face.

I am so sorry for the loss of Sam in this lifetime. He wil be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

To the Hopley family,

I want to express my deepest condolences for the passing of Sam. My heart broke when I heard the tragic news. Sam was the first friend I made while working at rocket, and took me under his wing during my training. That mentoring quickly turned into a friendship. As you know, Sam just has this natural knack for making you feel comfortable, at ease, and at home. Sam lit up a room when he walked in, and was always in for a post work beer or hangout. Sam was a friend, and a good one at that. He has the biggest heart, and gave the best hugs and high fives. One of my fondest memories with Sam before I moved back to Ontario was an impromptu drinks and appetizers at the Adelaide Oyster House with my sister, and good friend Amber. Sam was walking by, saw us in the window and pulled up a chair without skipping a beat. He started ordering us cocktails he knew we’d love, and dozens of oysters. A quick bite turned into life chats, reminiscing on past shenanigans, and belly aching laughs until the wee hours of the morning. He has an incredible heart, and I’m grateful to have known him. Ever since I went back to the mainland, when I drink a cappuccino, I can’t help but compare them to that of the great Sam Hopley. I dedicated the one I bought this morning to him. Cappucinos will have a bittersweet meaning now. I am heartbroken for you and for this devastating loss, and Sam; I hope wherever you find yourself, you have a seal skin bow tie on, and your mind and heart are at peace.

All my love,

Brie Champagne

Sam was somebody who brought a smile to my face every time I saw him. The last time we spoke, we chatted about his goal of a zero-waste lifestyle – he clearly cared so much about this world and the people in it. It seems like it is always the best people who we lose so long before their time.
Sending so much love to Dave and the rest of the family.

Dear Sharon, Dave, Joy and extended family, We can’t imagine the depth of your loss and pain. Wishing you all the a peaceful path forward. Please accept our sincere condolences. Joan and Wayne Myles

Rest in Peace my friend.. I’ll always remember your different sense of humor and the many fun games of pool we had. My condolences to all those affected by your passing.

Always to be remembered is how thoughtful and kind Sam was. A truly unique individual who loved to make others smile. I’ll never forget the way he always so pleasantly greeted his friends and acquaintances whenever we would run into them strolling around downtown. His friendly nature meant he loved to stop and chat, and it seemed like he knew every second person who walked by. He was always fun to be around, being his goofy self and always finding the humor in things. This is a painful loss for anyone who had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Sam.
Sam will be in my heart forever, and I’ll always treasure the special memories we made together.
Thinking of Sharon, Joy and Dave and sending all of my love.

Much love and comfort to Sharon, Dave, Joy and all Sam’s family and friends.
Peace
