Sandra A. M. Patton (née stokes) R.N.

March 8, 1949 to December 3, 2025

Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Sandra A. M. Patton, on December 3, 2025. Born on March 8, 1949, Sandy was a bright light in our family and in the lives of all who knew her.

Sandy was known for her incredible artistic talents, especially her beautifully painted Christmas sleigh ornaments, as well as her cross-stitching, knitting, and crocheting—hobbies she cherished even when she could no longer do them in recent years. She was equally dedicated to her career in nursing, first as a NICU nurse at the Janeway and later in an administrative role at the Janeway Surgical Day Care. Sandy was a pillar of strength and a source of unconditional love for her family and friends. We will always remember her unwavering optimism, her kind heart, and the joy she brought into every room she entered.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Patton; her daughter, Jennifer Patton Mercer; her parents, Kenneth and Blanche (Smith) Stokes; and her brother-in-law, Thomas Ryan.

Sandy is survived by her cherished granddaughter, Reilly Jane Mercer; and by her three loving sisters and their families. Terry Sharpe (Kevin) and their children, Kerri Milne (Brad) and their sons William and Matthew; Kelli Sharpe (Rick Rowsell, deceased) and her children Katie Turpin and Carter Turpin; stepdaughter Jessica Ghaney (Anthony); and Kris Sharpe (Monique Mulrooney) and their children Julia and Noah Sharpe. She is also survived by Jean Ryan and her children, Lori Ryan (Cory Blackwood) and their son Mckellen Blackwood, and Steven Ryan (Megan) and his daughter, Ava Cooze. Additionally, she is survived by Kimberely Kearley (Arthur) and their children Alicia and Ryan Kearley. Sandy leaves behind a large circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends whose lives she touched.

Sandy’s greatest joy over the past five years was having her granddaughter Reilly live with her. Reilly moved in to help her grandmother after Sandy’s husband passed away. When Sandy was diagnosed with cancer, the two moved back to Newfoundland to be close to family. Sandy’s world revolved around Reilly.

Sandy shared a lifelong bond with her aunt, Geri Sprague, who was not only family but a close friend throughout her life. Her dear friends of more than 55 years, Fran Cunningham and Karen Hyder, will miss her deeply. The family also extends heartfelt thanks to Robin Patton, who called her faithfully; Sandy thought the world of him.

We are deeply grateful to the staff of Pleasantview Towers, 4 North East, for the excellent care they provided. Sandy was treated like family, and she certainly had her favourite caregivers—who know who they are.

A visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. December 16, 2025.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, as per Sandy’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice in her memory.

To Sandy’s family especially Reilly,
I worked with Sandy at the Janeway for many years and enjoyed her friendship and her nursing knowledge which she shared. So many things come to mind as I think of those years past, and one is the memory of her beautiful Christmas hand painted sleighs that so many family and teachers have received over the years. Each year as I take them out I think of her.
Sandy had wonderful cooking skills and recipes that she shared with us. It has been a long time since I have seen her but she is fondly remembered. Rest in peace friend.
Please accept my deepest sympathy at this sad time.

My deepest sympathy to Sandy’s family & friends, especially her granddaughter Riley. I have fond memories of having worked with Sandy as part of the Janeway Perioperative Team.. Riley, your name was mentioned frequently & lovingly. As in other years, I will be putting Sandy’s painted sleighs on my Christmas tree. Rest easy now Sandy.

I was the dentist at Janeway for many years where I met Sandy. I appreciated her compassion as well as her sence of humor.. I considered her a friend. My condolences to her family.

Sandy was a very dedicated, knowledgeable and skillful nurse. She provided such wonderful care to so many neonates, children and families throughout her career. As a former Janeway nurse, I was privileged to watch her in action and to have her support on many occasions. I also have several of her Christmas sleigh ornaments adorning my tree. Deepest condolences to her granddaughter, family, friends and nursing colleagues.

I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting this fine nurse. I do have the pleasure of every Christmas having ing my red sleds.

To all of Sandy’s family my deepest sympathy at this time. I only hope her memories help you through this difficult time. RIP Sandy.
