Sandra Loretta Osmond (nee Macfarlane)

August 3, 1939 to June 23, 2021

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the children of Sandra Osmond (nee Macfarlane) share the news of her passing.  Sandra is predeceased by her husband Gerry, and her parents Alex and Florence Macfarlane. Left with happy memories are her beloved sister Judy Macfarlane; her children, Gillian and Doug Reid, Tracey and Jeffrey Pittman, and Ian and Suzanne Osmond; her grandchildren Joshua (Victoria), Gregory (Jennifer), Allyson, and Kaitlyn (Ben) Reid, Jack, Sophie and Rachel Pittman, and Thomas and Justin Osmond; sister-in-law Frances Osmond and brother-in-law Ronald (Betty) Osmond, nieces and nephews, and many people who she cared for like family, including Amie Foley.   Sandra recently welcomed her first great-grandchild, Parker Elizabeth Reid, into the world with delight.  Throughout her life, Sandra enjoyed a large circle of deep and enduring friendships from her school days at Prince of Wales Collegiate and her dedicated service to Bethesda Pentecostal Church.  Sandra grew up in the iconic Four Sisters houses on Temperance Street and spent her holidays at the “summer home” on Neary’s Pond.  After a very brief career in the Steers’ advertising department, Sandra married Gerry Osmond and stepped into the role of World’s Best Mom, and later World’s Best Nanny.  Her home was always filled with bible study groups, youth group socials, parties, and individuals needing a cup of tea and a kind word. Sandra’s creativity shone through her volunteer activities with religious and community organizations such as the Children’s Wish Foundation.  Throughout her life, Sandra made the world a more beautiful place through her limitless kindness, generosity, and sense of humour (not to mention her impeccable fashion sense and lipstick).  She was God’s love in action.   A special thank you to her sister-in-Law Frances Osmond, who made it possible for Mom to remain in her home as her memory failed, and to the medical professionals who ensured she had a peaceful passing.   Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2:00 to 4:00, and 7:00 to 9:00 on Friday, June 25th. Loved ones wishing to attend her funeral at Bethesda Pentecostal Church at 11:00 on Saturday, June 26th should register by clicking on the following link https://www.bethesda.ca/osmond. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideon’s or the Children’s Wish Foundation. Alternatively, do a small act of kindness to reflect the light that Sandra brought to this world.   We would love to hear about it. To send a message of condolence please visit www.carnells.com.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of such a special lady. Her home, arms, and heart were open to all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My relationship with both your Mom and Dad goes back to the time of their commitment to Christ at the Humbermouth Evangelistic services I conducted. We stayed in touch over the years at Bay Roberts, St. John’s and Florida. Our relationship with the Lord kept us in a friendship that will extend from here to Heaven where we shall meet again.. You were blessed to have such wonderful parents who nurtured in those things that matter most. My wife Velma joins me in praising God for the Resurrection you and they share in now and throughout eternity. The Lord hold you in His care and love. Berkley & Velma Reynolds

Gillian, Tracey, Ian, Suzanne (Sister), Thomas & Justin,
Mike and I are so saddened to hear of your Mom’s passing. For so many years we have been a part of each other lives. We have so many wonderful memories both there at home and in Florida. Numerous celebrations, so many meals together including picnics at Ft. Desoto park with Humphrey and Maggie such dear friends for so long.. Your mom was a kind and gentle soul. I will miss the, oh so thoughtful, cards we would receive from her. I recall so many times walking into the little speciality shops in Florida and she would head straight to the card section , carefully reading through them.
She will be missed by all and we are so thankful to have had her in our lives. Love to all the family.

Ian, Suzanne and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Your Mom has left you the gift of precious memories that will warm your hearts in the days ahead. Blessings to all who have been touched by Sandra’s kindness, friendship and love.

To the Osmond family,
We were indeed saddened to learn of Sandra’s passing. Sandra was one of the most unpretentious people we have ever met. She was so helpful to others with no expectation of “return”. For health reasons, “George” we will not attend the visitation or funeral. Rest assured of our thoughts and prayers.
George and Barbara

We were so sorry to hear of Sandra’s passing.
Sending our deepest condolences and praying for you all at this difficult time.

To the Osmond family,
Melvin and I are so sorry to hear about Sandra. Our recent memories were of Sandra and Gerry hosting our Bible Study at their home. They were wonderful hosts. Even though we all would contribute to our lunch after the study Sandra would always have some freshly prepared treat for us to enjoy. My memories go back further than that though. She was a wonderful and involved mother and grandmother while her children and grandchildren attended Vaters Elementary. For many years Sandra and Jean Matthews would come to the school once a week to cook hotdogs for all the children. The students loved her. She was always so gracious and friendly. Added to those attributes was her casual glamour.. it takes a special kind of woman to bring glamour to a school while cooking hotdogs!!
She will be greatly missed. We are praying for you all.
Karen and Melvin Regular

Sincere condolences to all of Sandra’s family. So sad to hear of your loss.. I was a long time friend from Holloway School and Prince of Wales College, as well as early years in Cochrane Street Church Choir..
Thinking of you at this sad time. Daphne Baggs

Gillian, Tracey, Ian and families,
It’s never easy to lose a loved one, especially a mom; our hearts break for you. It was always evident how close you all were to her. Sandra was such an admirable and amazing woman!
Your mom leaves behind a legacy of countless blessings to all who knew her. Dedication, kindness, friendliness, thoughtfulness and of course her contagious smile just to mention a few. My family and I have been on the receiving end of Sandra’s warm friendship the past three decades and we will always value that. Your mom will be dearly missed. Please remember that we are here for you❤. (Isaiah 43:2)

To the Osmond family: What a beautiful honourable tribute to your beautiful Mom. The last time I spoke to her was at a Dollarama store a few years ago. I was telling her that I was buying chocolate bars to take to Evan in Virginia, some of his favourites that he cannot find there. I don’t know what she was buying.
It was a pleasure to talk to her at parent teacher conferences back in the days.. There was always plenty of positive remarks made. She was among the best of mothers that I loved to talk with. Love and prayers to all, Tracey, Gillian and Ian.

Dear Gillian, Tracey, Ian & family – your mom was “the best of the best”, always kind with a beautiful spirit. She was funny & would make me smile. I loved my visits with her & seeing her was always a highlight of my visit to St John’s. She will be missed. Please take care & i hope your memories hold you close & give you comfort.

To Gillian & family,

Sandra was a Kind and positive person.

My deepest sympathy on your loss. I pray that God will bring comfort to your hearts.

Gillian, Tracey and Ian,
My heart aches for you as you deal with the lost of your mom. Mrs. Osmond, as I will always affectionately refer to her, was truly one in a million. She has left an imprint on my life. She was a blessing constantly without ever seeming to make an effort at it. I will never forget her laugh- so much more refined then my own. I hope that put a smile on your faces. 🙂 Praying that you find peace and assurance that your mom is now with your wonderful father and her Heavenly Father, hearing ‘well done, thou good and faithful servant’. My thoughts and prayers are with you. My sincerest condolences.

To Gillian, Tracey and Ian and their families, I am deeply sorry to hear of Sandra’s passing. I have known Sandra for many years because her devoted sister Judy and I have been friends since our teenage years. From those early years, I remember Sandra as a beautiful person with a beautiful soul, and that remained constant through our lives. I know it’s hard to have lost your Mom, sister, grandmother, but what a wonderful legacy she has left you, one that will always be with you..
My sincerest condolences

The Osmond Family,
My first memories of Sandra go back to when I was a teenager. She and Gerry were members of the Gideons and often they came to our home for their meetings. She always had a kind word and a brilliant smile. Over the years whenever Mel and I chatted with her, be it at church or elsewhere, that same smile was always there.
She will be remembered by the many who came in contact with her.
Our sincere condolences to you all.
Melvin & Linda Earle

To the Osmond family,

Our family has been the recipient of Mrs. Osmond’s love for almost 50 years now. She has such a special place in our hearts. From the time we first came to Newfoundland, I have memories of Mrs. Osmond’s heart warming smile, her laugh, her generosity. She welcomed us into your home and she helped mom figure out many things about life in Canada, from registering in school, to our first berry picking experience, to dinners at Swiss Chalet. She was always there for all the special moments to cheer us on and encourage us, from cards and gifts at graduation to opening up her home for showers. Mom always turned to Mrs. Osmond to add that touch of class to things. So, of course, mom leaned on her to help with my wedding and Mrs. Osmond’s care and generosity blew me away. Mrs. Osmond was a role model to me, of what it is to love unconditionally, without judgement and full of grace. Her impact lives on in my life and I will treasure the memories in my heart. She will be truly missed. Grieving with you over her loss, thankful for her eternity, and praying for peace and comfort for you all.

Gillian, Tracey, Ian and families

Our deepest condolescences to the Reid family.

To the Osmond Family:
I have been associated with the Osmond family for more than 60 years. Ron and I worked together as teenagers at Imperial Oil and he invited me to their home on Carpasian Road to meet his family. Although Gerry was away at the time, I was told of his wonderful wife, Sandra.. Soon I met them and found out everything was true. Over the years we have treasured our friendship with them and were the recipients of her love and kindness during difficult times. During the pandemic, it was a privilege for me to be able to share conversations and to pray with Sandra and Frances by phone. Ruth joins me to extend heartfelt condolences to all family members and the assurance of our continued prayers.
