It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sheldon Roy Thornhill, who passed away peacefully at the age of 79 following a very brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Anderson’s Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, and raised in St. John’s, Sheldon lived a life defined by kindness, humility, friendship, family, and an enduring love of music. To know Sheldon was to know a man whose gentle spirit, warm smile, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He possessed a rare ability to make people feel welcome and valued, and his genuine compassion touched countless lives.
Music was not simply a passion for Sheldon—it was the very heartbeat of his life. An extraordinarily talented accordion player, he spent decades sharing his gift with audiences throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, across Canada, and abroad in Ireland and Qatar. Through every performance, he proudly celebrated the rich musical traditions of his beloved province, serving as a true ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador wherever he went.
In his early years, Sheldon performed with the band Soirees, helping to bring Newfoundland music to audiences far and wide. For more than 30 years, he was a cherished member of the Outer Cove Concert Crowd, where he formed lifelong friendships and shared countless memorable performances. In recent years, Sheldon found great joy as one half of Sullivan’s Songhouse, performing alongside one of his closest friends, Sean Sullivan, for the past seven years. Together they entertained, inspired, and connected people through music, laughter, and storytelling.
Sheldon’s accordions were much more than instruments; they were his beloved companions. Some would say he was born with an accordion in his hands. Affectionately referred to as “the girls,” they travelled everywhere with him. No matter the occasion, Sheldon was always ready to pull out an accordion and play a tune. Whether at a community concert, a family gathering, a friend’s home, or even an airport terminal, he had an extraordinary ability to turn any situation into a kitchen party. The now-infamous Toronto Pearson Airport kitchen party of 2017, widely shared and celebrated across Newfoundland and Labrador and viewed around the world on YouTube and other news broadcasts, remains one of the most memorable examples of Sheldon’s larger-than-life spirit. True to form, he did what he always did best—bringing strangers together through music, laughter, and the unmistakable warmth of Newfoundland hospitality.
His remarkable talent was matched only by his humility. Whether performing on a large stage, entertaining at a community gathering, or playing among friends, he approached every opportunity with gratitude and genuine love for both the music and the people around him. His accordion brought joy to generations, and his melodies became part of the soundtrack of countless cherished memories.
Above all else, Sheldon’s greatest joy in life was his family, whom he loved deeply and unconditionally. He leaves behind his beloved wife of seven years, Thelma, whose love, care, and companionship brought him immense happiness and comfort during the last decade of his life. He is deeply mourned and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Kimberley (Keith), and his son, Todd (Albert), both of whom were a constant source of pride and joy to him. Sheldon was a devoted and immensely proud grandfather to Jacob and Jordan, who held a very special place in his heart and brought him endless happiness throughout his life.
He is also survived by his cherished stepchildren, Sherry (Steve), Rhonda, and Corey (Lori). Sheldon was a proud and loving step-grandfather to Justin, Stephanie, Kyle, and Mekellan, and a devoted step-great-grandfather to Bria, Brielle, and Janelle. He embraced his extended family wholeheartedly, offering unconditional love, encouragement, and support to each of them.
Pre-deceased by his parents, Archie and Winnie Thornhill, and his beloved brother Scottie, he leaves to mourn his only sister, Dorothea, and niece Christina (Brian). He is especially remembered by his dear friends Sean and Angie Sullivan, Dave and Sandy Dupree, and Ed and Mary Cadigan, all of whom held a very special place in his heart.
In addition to his immediate and extended family, Sheldon leaves behind an endless circle of close friends, fellow musicians, neighbours, and acquaintances whose lives were enriched by knowing him. The number of people who considered Sheldon a dear friend is simply too great to count. His gift for friendship, his infectious sense of humour, and his ability to make everyone feel like family ensured that wherever he went, he left behind lasting connections and treasured memories.
While his accomplishments as a musician were many, those who knew him best will remember him not only for the music he created but for the person he was—a kind and gentle soul, a loyal friend, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and stepfather, and a man whose presence made the world a whole lot brighter.
Though our hearts are broken by his loss, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on through the music he shared, the friendships he treasured, the family he loved, and the countless lives he touched—a life that truly revolved around “Music and Friends.” His accordion may now rest, but the melodies he created and the joy he brought to others will continue to echo for generations to come. Somewhere in heaven, “the girls” are playing.
A life so beautifully lived can never truly be lost. Sheldon will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

Our deepest sympathy to Sheldon’s family. Although I am a second cousin and we occasionally spoke on the phone, Bill and I had little knowledge of the many hearts he touched, but the obituary and today’s church service made it clear that he was loved and respected by people near and far.
We send much love and deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved husband, Thelma, and to yours and Sheldon’s familes and friends. We were neighbours for several years on Avery Place and my Jerry was always happy to lend his hands when needed and we always enjoyed a chuckle with them both. They were always smiling and laughing. We watched Sheldon’s service this morning and between the music and the beautiful sermon, there could never have been a better send off to the angels in heaven than we heard this morning. My dad also loved music so much and before he passed he told me he had a dream one night and he said he dreamed he went to heaven and he said he got to the gates and there was an angel on each side of the gates. Each one reached out and took a hand and walked him through….. just my little story but it always gave me some peace. Cherish your beautiful memories and take time to grieve and cry; we are praying for strength for you as you move forward.

In the time since I have had the privilege of being in Sheldon’s company numerous times ,mostly at Ed and Mary’s cabin. On each and every occasion you were met by the same welcoming and sincere person. Sheldon had that special gift of making everyone feel that they were the only person in the room, whether it was while he was performing or as he sat down for a one on one chat . Jim and I were blessed to go to Ireland with the Concert Crowd back in the day. I too remember Sheldon standing in the ocean, wrapped in a Newfoundland flag, playing the accordion. We last chatted at the festival in August.. Wonderful memories of a wonderful man.
I knew Sheldon when he grew up on Little Street and I was on Whiteway Street, although we always knew him as Shelley.. And then, in the sixties, we sat together in a couple of classes at MUN. A finer person you couldn’t meet. I extend condolences to his family.

We’ve lost a beautiful and gentle man in Sheldon. I was so sad to learn of his passing. His genuine smile and heartfelt entertainment was certainly his trademark. I first met Sheldon when I had my large group of The Celtic Fiddlers at the Arts and culture Centre for an Irish show with The Concert Crowd He was amazed at the 20+ musicians! He, too, was amazing and so warm towards my group. I never forgot that. We have since played together along with Sean. Sean will certainly miss his friend and music buddy. I met Sheldon at MUN back in the 1960’s. At that time he was bowler and we spent many hours in the bowling alleys at MUN. I lost track of him for a great many years until I became aware of his reputation as a musician and entertainer. Clearly, he was a very talented man who had a positive impact on those he came in contact with. I am sorry to learn of his passing and I extend my sincere condolences to his family and those who knew him well.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Sheldon’s passing. He was a truly special man whose kindness, warmth, and love of music touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His accordion, his smile, and his gentle nature brought joy to so many, and the memories he created will live on forever.
