Sherry (Sheridan) Sooley (Payne)

August 28, 1942 to February 6, 2022

Obituary

Sherry (Sheridan) Sooley (Payne) passed peacefully in her home on Feb 6, 2022, in Mount Pearl, NL, at the age of 79 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was born August 28, 1942, in St. John’s, NL.

She leaves behind daughter Jillian (Roberto) Viceconte, sons Terrence (Lisa) Sooley and Christopher Sheppard, grandchildren Kristin (Aaron) Hazan, Jack and Brooke Viceconte, brother Cyril Payne, sister-in-law Betty (Randell) Smith, and her two rescue cats Cheech and Chong. She is predeceased by husband Douglas Sheppard of Spaniard’s Bay and parents Ruth and Sidney Payne.

She grew up on Nagles Hill in St. John’s and was a passionate Newfoundlander. A long time server at the beloved Pink Poodle restaurant Sherry’s welcoming smiles and friendly banter was as comforting to regulars as a jigg’s dinner on a Sunday afternoon. She had an infectious laugh, a delightful sense of humour, and a kind heart.

We were blessed to have so many supportive friends and family around her over the past year. She will be dearly missed by her family, and her many friends, who will always remember her biting political criticisms, her love for a proper apple flip, her Sunday dinner, and a raucous game of 120 with her family with a glass of Riunite.

There will be a small family gathering to honor her, but in accordance with her wishes there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please provide a donation in her name to either the Cancer Society or your local cat rescue.
