It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Grace Abbott, our devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, on September 4th, 2023, in the presence of family at the age of 84.

Predeceased by her beloved parents Janie and Frederick Fisher; her cherished brothers William (Willie) and Joseph (Josie). Leaving behind to celebrate a lifetime of memories are her husband of 66 years, Anderson; children Glenn, Marilyn (Randy Folkes), Dean (Sherry), Darren (Kathy), and Dana (Gerard Collins); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; truly special sisters-in-law Marion Abbott (Warren) and Sophie Fisher (Josie); nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Her grandchildren especially Kent (Stephanie), Mark (Chris), Hayley and Noah grieve the loss of their grandmother who was always there for them and deeply involved in their upbringing. She impacted profoundly the people they have become. Time spent with young people including her great-grandchildren Georgia and Harrison brought so much joy.

Shirley and Anderson started their lives together in Bonavista. She taught immediately after high school, but later moved to St. John’s to support Anderson in his studies to become a Master Plumber. Her life then focused on raising their five children whose births spanned over 15 years and being a homemaker extraordinaire from cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, etc.

She was an active member of Gower Street United Church and a great lover of all things music especially any performances by her grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of love and a profound commitment to family and community. She was an angel on earth.

Gratitude is extended to the staff of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for the exceptional care and family support during the last days of her life, especially Dr. Phair, Dr. Matthews, Dr. Chan and the 7 East nursing staff.

A heartfelt thanks to the staff of Bishops Gardens Seniors Living for providing care over the last year and who continue to care for our dad.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations can be made to Gower Street United Church.

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, September 7th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be held at Gower Street United Church on Friday, September 8th at 1:00 PM with interment to follow at Memorial Gardens Protestant Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed from Gower Street United Church via YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

Please note that Carnell’s Funeral Home is a nut free building, due to a staff member with a severe allergy. Thank you for your understanding.

Aunt Shirley was a very special lady and loved by everyone who knew her. Please know that we share in your grief & extend our deepest sympathy to all her family.

Your mother was truly an angel. I will cherish childhood memories of sleepovers at your house, with your mom in the kitchen ensuring we had snacks. Her kindness, generosity, and warmth will never be forgotten. ❤️

To the entire Abbott Family

I was so sorry to hear of the loss or your Mom (“Mrs. Abbott”). I’m sure she will be truly missed as nothing can replace the love of ones Mother. I have so many fond and loving memories of our years as neighbors from Mayor Avenue. They were the best times of our lives. The loss of your mom is a big loss for your family as there is just no other love like a mother’s. While I know that words are, only a small gesture of support during this difficult time it is important to hold close to your heart the beautiful memories you have created over the years and she will be with you always. Please note that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Heaven has gained another Angel.

Anderson and family, sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. Please accept our deepest sympathy as we remember Shirley fondly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

Sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy. Cherish your happy memories of her.

Dana, Gerard and family… thinking of you in this difficult time. And knowing how very close your family is and seeing the love you have for your mom. Take care. Our deepest sympathies, Annette and Craig

Dana and Family, I’m so sorry for your loss . Remember all the good times and love you have for your mother to help you get through this sad time ..

Dana and Family, we were so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She certainly was an angel who adored her family. I remember her and you father very fondly. Although I didn’t know them very long I felt comfortable dropping in unannounced for a visit from time to time. It will be difficult for your father as I am sure he will find it lonely with her gone but I know that you and your siblings will ensure that he receives lots of attention and protective oversight. I’m kind of laid up as I recently fell and broke my hip; but when I’m able to get out and about I will call and visit

Our sincerest condolences on the passing of Shirley.
A truly sweet and lovely lady. She will be remembered always.
