It is with profound sadness that we announce her peaceful passing in the presence of her loving family on August 8, 2024 in her 89th year.
Predeceased by husband Francis Oliver on November 20, 2004 and her sons, Gary in 1994 and Danny in 2004; brother Earle, and sisters Marjorie and Marilyn.
Leaving to mourn with broken hearts and a lifetime of memories are her children: Frank Jr. (Ann Marie), Fern Kean (Bob), Rosalind Hennessey (Andy) with whom she resided for the past 20 years, Randy (Sandra), Hope Young (Calgary, AB), Darrell, 10 grandchildren: Jennifer, Leanne, Jessica, Jackalyn, Meagan, Alison, Colby, Angela, Curtis and Kirk and 5 great grandchildren Madison, Nathan, Claire, Hailey and Emma.
Left with fond, loving memories her brother Harvey Zwicker (Ottawa).
Special sisters-in-law Beatrice Wadland, Rose Thaine, June Gullage and Joan Bastow, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends including fur babies Sofie and Maggie who constantly kept her company.
The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to her daughter Rosalind and her husband Andy for the excellent care given to her during the last 20 years. It did not go unnoticed. Our thanks also to the Eastern Health Care Team doctors and nurses and the Palliative/Paramedic teams for their compassionate care.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation to be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 12th.
Funeral service to take place on Tuesday August 13th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow in the Field of Honour, Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Flowers gratefully accepted as Shirley loved her flower garden.

I just learned about Shirley’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to the family at this difficult time. Nothing takes the place of a mother’s unconditional love for her family, that’s a memory that will live on forever. I have very fond memories of Shirley, always a bright smile with a cheerful welcome. I can still picture the fern plant she so carefully grew in her house; it was the longest I have ever seen. Shirley and my mom Jean (Grouchy) Lacelle shared a long-standing friendship. Wishing the Bastow family peace and comfort. Rest In Peace Shirley.

I have fond memories of spending time at your home with my mother (Joan Rodgers/ cousin to your mom).. I believe it was on Blackmatsh Road, and there were lots of laughs, and such a big family gathering! Years later we visited her again, 1988, and I believe a few visits after that. Your mom was so friendly and welcoming, please accept sincere condolences from my mom and I.
We are thinking of you all during this difficult time. Your Mom was one special lady. We have so many great memories of her from her laughing at Noel’s jokes to our chats about what happened on the story today. She was beautiful inside and out and we will also miss her dearly. Shirley was a bright light, one of the sweetest and most kind person I’ve been blessed to know. Her smile would light up the room and I sincerely enjoyed all the time I’ve spent with her over the years, going all the way back to being a teenager and hanging at the house on Perlin Street and in recent years for Randy’s annual birthday gatherings. Very sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was such a pleasant lady and I will always remember how she would call me “Doogie Howser” whenever I would see her haha.
