Simon Frank Mellor

March 13, 1958 to March 21, 2023

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Simon in St. John’s, NL. Simon is the beloved father of Justine Mellor (Alonso Reategui) of Vancouver, BC. and Alison (Martin Mues) of Aachen, Germany. He is proud grandad of Chloe Reategui and Adrian Mues.

Also left to mourn are his sisters Judith Mellor (Michael Sullivan), Hilary Mellor (Craig Bihun), Clare Mellor (Evan Locke) and his brother Justin Mellor (Mary Jane Smith). Simon will be dearly missed by nieces and nephews Julia Sullivan, Peter Sullivan, Rosalind Bihun, Christian Bihun, Olivia Locke, Eli Mellor and Samuel Mellor, and also his cousins and extended family in England. He also leaves behind his good friend Maureen Christofferson.

Simon was born in Bury, England and immigrated with his family to St John’s in 1971. He obtained his B. Arch in 1981 from Nova Scotia Technical before relocating to Vancouver BC. He practised architecture for over 40 years and his expertise will be remembered by his former colleagues. Simon was also an avid cyclist and an accomplished harmonica player; accompanying bands in blues and rockabilly jams around Vancouver. He returned to NL in 2021.

Cremation has taken place and it was Simon’s wish that there be no visitation or service.

I too was a former colleague of Simon’s. I will remember Simon as see buildings locally that he contributed too.

I was a former colleague and “boss” of Simon’s while he was at PBK Architects/A49 in Vancouver. We always knew Simon as the most solid technically competent senior staff person who could handle challenging projects. He was the go to person for staff to solve difficult problems and to provide mentoring and guidance to those less experienced. His dry sense of humour and no nonsense attitude always helped the team make their way through project work successfully. His legacy lives on through many buildings he helped creat.

I’m sorry to hear the passing of Simon, a colleague of mine in Vancouver for many years. Well respected person in our field of profession. We missed you when you moved to NF, and now we even dearly missed you forever.
My thoughts prayers goes to all the family.

My deepest condolences to Simon’s family. I met Simon when we went through Architecture in Halifax (1977-1981). Simon had a great sense of humour and a was a good friend. I remember the good times we had in the studio late at night discussing designs and laughing at the crazy things in life. It is sad we did not keep in contact after graduation. Rest in Peace Simon.

I’m very saddened to hear of Simon’s passing. I worked with him in Vancouver and he was a great mentor and coworker with a wonderful sense of humour. We kept in touch after he moved on from the firm and he was quite proud of his daughters and was excited to be a grandpa. My condolences to all his family and all who loved him. He will be missed..

We are so sorry to hear the tragic news regarding Simon’s passing. We worked with him for many years and found him to be a wonderful colleague and a loyal friend. He was highly respected for his technical knowledge and equally highly valued for his team spirit. The image on the obituary captures Simon’s love of the outdoors and his warm and friendly demeanour.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him but none more so than his loving family to whom we send our deepest condolences.

Judith & Family,

My deepest condolences. I worked with Simon at my first Architectural job over 15 years ago and I considered him a great mentor. We kept in touch over the years and eventually Simon and I chose to work together again at a different Vancouver firm. Since then our career paths diverged but I will always remember his wise words (which were usually punctuated with dry humor). Simon will be missed by all those lucky enough to know him.

Judi, and all your family and dear friends for many years, what a sad time. My strongest memory of Simon is having my sides ache from laughing as we together attempted to imitate John Cleese et al. Such wonderful times. Deepest condolences, and take care all. Daryl

Judy, Hilary, Clare, and Justin – very sorry to hear of Simon’s passing. I remember him years ago when we were all young, he was full of fun and energy, always a smile on his face. So sad his life has been cut short. My deepest sympathies to you all.

Judy, Clare, and family, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. Thinking of you and sending my sincere condolences.

My sincerest condolences to Judith, Hillary, Clare and Justin.
In 1977, Simon and I both applied to Nova Scotia Technical College, and in an effort to calm our trepidation, we asked the college to make us roommates at O’Brien Hall. They obliged. So, we lived together for quite some time. We were the closest of friends. We shared every hope and every fear. We would exchange thoughts every night, sometimes for hours. He spoke often of Judith, the sister who was like a rock – who was always there for him. And Hillary and Clare, every escapade of the girls – only in grade school at the time. And almost every night of Justin, the baby brother, the very light of his world, a child for whom he wished everything.
I would have never made it through architecture school without Simon. He was there for me, every time I wavered or had doubt, unselfishly. He stood next to me when I married. He was like a brother to me. Our whole class loved Simon. Many of them are mourning with me right now, even those who have not seen him for 42 years. He is an indelible soul.
I cannot begin to list all the things to which Simon opened my eyes. But I will say that I have never, and will never, listen to James Cotton, Sonny Terry or Paul Butterfield without thinking of him. Every note that I ever bend on my Marine Band will forever be a tribute to him.

Simon was a classmate of mine at Nova Scotia Tech. I always enjoyed his quick wit. He was a fine fellow.
