Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Stephen Robert Goulding on September 3, 2025, at the age of 57 in Lévis, Québec.
Leaving to mourn are daughter Rachel (Tyler Ryan), step-daughter Kathleen and her children Hayden and Lauren, Rachel and Kathleen’s mother Ellen Goulding, siblings Allan, William (Heather), Russell (Jocelyn), Susan (Sean) and Andrew (Melissa) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Allan and Maude Goulding of Gander.
Born in Grand Falls-Windsor on April 9, 1968, Stephen was the fifth of six children. He graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1993. Steve excelled as an economic analyst, consultant, and entrepreneur applying himself to many major economic development projects over his entire career. His infectious enthusiasm and love for professional sports particularly football, baseball and hockey including his deep interest in all statistical aspects will be dearly missed by his many friends. He considered himself a homeless Expos fan lost in the sports wilderness. Steve took pride in his culinary creations and was always keen to learn new things and share with others.
Steve loved his family and was a loyal and close friend to many. His kindness and compassion was evident with his decision to care for his mother during her final years. He will be greatly missed throughout his many circles of friends and colleagues.
The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., St. John’s, on Friday, October 10 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Visitation will then continue at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander, on Monday, October 13 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM followed by a memorial service at 3:30 at Stacey’s Funeral Home with interment at Gander All Saints Cemetery.
Everyone is welcome to join the family in continuing to celebrate Stephen’s life at Legends Lounge & Grill, 1 Caldwell Street, Gander.

Sincere condolences to all the Goulding family, truly saddened to hear of his sudden passing. Stevie was a great friend and always enjoyed participating in his many sports pools (most of which I could not understand!).
Unfortunately could not make the celebration of life in Gander today. I’m sure lots of good stories there tonight.

I was very saddened to learn of Steve’s passing. Steve and I met and became friends at the annual ExposFest event held in Montreal about 10 or 11 years ago. Not only did we bond over our beloved baseball team the Montreal Expos, we also liked a lot of the same music and laughed at a lot of the same stuff. Steve could always be counted on to share a good sports reference, band recommendation or classic Simpsons clip to brighten your day. He was sharp-witted, good-hearted, and could run a sports pool and manage a spreadsheet better than anyone I’ve ever met.
My deepest sympathies to Steve’s friends and family, including his daughter Rachel, who I had the pleasure of meeting once in Montreal. Steve was a great guy, and he’ll be dearly missed.

Smart, funny, sarcastic and one of the “best organizers” I have every had the privilege to meet. I’ve been fortunate to know all of the Goulding boys and you are all different, but share the consistent personality of being good people.

My condolences to the Goulding family on the passing of Steve. I met Steve on the LCP, and in spite of leaving the project in 2014, we stayed in regular contact. We had many good discussions about the new hydro deal. Steve cared deeply about his province and his friends. I am going to miss those discussions with my good friend..

I was saddened to hear about Steve’s passing. I knew him through our hockey pool emails but I always admired how he kept everything running smoothly (even when some of us couldn’t keep our rosters straight!). His quick wit and passion for sports made the pools fun, and you never doubted the accuracy of his spreadsheets! He’ll be missed, both for his sharp stats and quick wit. My condolences to his family and all who were lucky enough to know him better.
Dear Goulding Family,
Unfortunately travel commitments make it impossible for me to attend the visitation, but I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere condolences on Steve’s passing. He was a loyal friend who made it a point to keep in touch regardless of what paths our lives may lead us down. We had many a good political chat and debate, and he was a big supporter of my efforts as a musician, often coming out to gigs. I always found him to be a friendly and welcoming person. We could all do much worse than having a friend like Steve in our lives. Godspeed.

Sincere condolences to Rachel and all family. I only knew Steve since 1 year, but how much fun we had taking every break together! Listening to all his funny stories and jokes, we also chat about deeper stuff and serious things sometimes. He was often talking about you Rachel. He was a real brain, but with so much humor, and a good heart. Very sad that life took him so early!
Steve, as you might know, the days at work are not the same anymore. Everybody laught less and the food got no flavors compare to yours. The lack of your presence (and your great baritone voice) made a big empty space around here.

I’ve known Steve a long time, from the Voisey’s Bay Project and then the Lower Churchill Project. There were always great conversations going on with Steve, in particular about his cooking.

A month ago I was lucky enough to spend a week with Steve. He was enjoying life and sharing his excitement of life with those around him. Steve was a passionate person and his passion for what was going on in Churchill Falls was so evident that you knew better than ask a question. If you did the conversation could last for hours without you saying a word.
He was so bright and it is hard to believe that that light has gone out. I feel so lucky to have spent time whim last summer sharing a beer or two and listening to some wonderful stories. You will be missed my friend by every one but especially those in my family!! Rest in Peace!!!
I was truly shocked to hear of Steve’s passing. Steve was a really nice man. We worked closely pulling together costing numbers and stats for training workers for the Voiseys Bay project many years ago. Steve has left his mark on industry and people! My condolences to his family and friends
I first met Steve about 17 years ago at evening public open house event for what was then known simply as “the Lower Churchill Project.” That evening, he was joined by a young inquisitive Rachel, who we would soon learn was his “raison d’être..” Within a few weeks Steve had joined our small team, going on to make significant contributions in many areas. To his newly found friends, his brilliance was more and more apparent each day, as Steve used his inquisitive, problem-solving mind to address numerous challenges (e.g. material price escalation forecasting).
As years went and career paths changed, I had the great pleasure of calling upon Steve time and time again to help me solve a challenge. He never turned away my requests, while the end result was always beyond my initial expectations. It is now hard to fathom that our time collaborating together has come to an end. I will look back with great fondness of the times we spent together debating policy and finding solutions.
Steve was an exceptionally patriotic Newfoundlander and Labradorian, and Canadian, always expressing deeply held convictions on policies that he felt strongly would improve the betterment of society.
He will be deeply missed by his professional colleagues. We are honoured to have considered him a close friend.

I’m truly saddened to hear of my friend’s passing. We were roommates and buddies for many years. We played ball hockey and got in many sports pools together. He loved to organize sports pools and was very talented in creating them in his own unique manner. He was also a passionate Montreal Expos fan and tended many Expos events.. His favourite player was Tim Raines and thought he was the white version of the all star. He had a unique sense of humour and loved sarcasm. I will always remember you my friend. So sad to hear of Steve’s passing. So many memories of him from MUN and the concerts we attended. He called me once a year as he went through his contacts to reach out to see how I was doing.. Gonna miss that big smile and enthusiasm.
It was a shock to learn of Steve’s death; he had such energy, that you could think he would go on forever. In addition to that energy was a sociability that was built into his DNA: When I worked in Newfoundland, he was one of the first to come around and have a talk. And you wanted to get to know him: he was interesting, intelligent, inquisitive and critical; generous and goodhearted; he was also a source of Newfoundland history, with the occasional offering of something he had just whipped up in the kitchen. I am so sad to learn of Stephen’s death. I always enjoyed our visits and chats, especially your great meals at your mom’s and homemade scones! Thinking of Rachel and the whole family. Take care of yourselves and each other.
So very sad to hear the news. Too long before his time. I look back at how much Stevie did over the years and how many events and activities we all took part in that he organized. From golf tournaments to football pools, his life made all of ours a little more enjoyable. Farewell Stevie. You will be missed.

I’m still in a bit of a shock to hear of Steve’s passing. Steve was quick with a smile, a story and stories about analysis. An incredibly talented and smart guy that always added to a team. Since hearing of Steve’s too soon passing, there have been a number of text messages between former colleagues shares thoughts of Steve. Even in his passing, Steve is still bringing people together.
Our deepest condolences to all of the family. We are saddened by this news. Steve always took the time for more than a hello but truly to catch up when we would see him in the summer.

Very sad news to hear of Steve’s passing. I feel fortunate that a group of us high school buddies were able to have a small reunion this summer. Steve was there in full form and it was like nothing changed in the 29 years since we were last together. Rest in peace buddy.

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of my colleague, Steve, on September 3, 2025. His sudden departure has come as a shock to us all. I will truly miss his smiling face, his nobility, and his kindness.

I am sadden to hear of Steve’s passing. We knew each other from growing up in Gander and playing ball hockey in St. John’s. Steve’s organizational skills facilitated a lot of people keeping in touch with friends from home and a great workout. Always a good person to all. He will be missed.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear colleague and friend, Steve Goulding. I will always remember him by the name he introduced himself to me, as a mark of respect for who he was.
I had the privilege of working alongside Steve and witnessing his incredible skills with numbers, his passion for spreadsheets, and his unwavering dedication to accuracy and consistency. Beyond his professional excellence, Steve was one of the kindest souls I have met in my time in Canada.
He loved to bake for others, and with genuine curiosity, he always asked for feedback on the taste, something that reflected both his warmth and his humility. I have so many fond memories with him: from sharing stories to my very first golf lesson, which he kindly gave me as we planned for many more to come. He often spoke with pride about the hospitality of Gander, NL during 9/11, a place I had never known before meeting him.
When I reflect on Steve, what shines through is his kindness, generosity, and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him. His sudden passing has deeply saddened me, and I know he will be missed dearly.

Stephen was an absolute unit. From high school till now he always expressed remarkable wit and humour. His playful personality was only overshadowed by his incredible intelligence. He excelled at many things. His golf game was almost as good as his ping pong game. His culinary ventures were impressive. Stephan rattled out quotes from Albert Einstein and Homer Simpson and he was always on point. Stephan was an impressive person. Unique and memorable I will miss him greatly.
Very sad news to hear. Spoke to Steve on his visit home few weeks ago, golfed with him many times! You’ll be missed my friend, alot of good laughs(and profanities) as Steve was good at those as well!

My last words to him were, “Take care of yourself.” Steven was just a small blond haired boy when we became a big part of the Goulding family. We cherish those memories.
