Obituary

On Monday, December 26, 2022, Svetlana Leontevna Boltokova passed away peacefully at her home in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, in the company of family. She was 74 years old. Born in the U.S.S.R raised in Balaghannaakh, Sakha Republic, Svetlana trained as a film projectionist at the Sovetskij Kinotekhnikum in Sovetsk. She worked for almost two decades screening weekly movies at the House of Culture in Balaghannaakh and could often be seen riding her motorbike from village to village with a film canister strapped to the back. A respected voice within her community, Svetlana was sought out by friends and family for her warmth, patience, kindness, humor, and, most of all, her willingness to listen. She never failed to remember an important event or birthday and always put the needs of others before her own. Svetlana was particularly proud of her small farm, where she reared cows and chickens, and loved being in nature. She loved playing checkers and solving crossword puzzles. She was the devoted daughter of Daria Kirillovna Boltokova (1916-2008) and Leontiy Egorovich Boltokov (1915-1981), and mother of Daria Leontevna Boltokova. She came to Canada in 2021 to live with her daughter, Daria, and son-in-law Sean Gray, marking her first time travelling abroad. She will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

Rest in peace.
