Sylvia Rose originated from St. Carol’s, a very small rural community on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. It was here that she grew up, met the love of her life, Tommy Rose and started her family. The Rose’s had five children: Owen, Marilyn, Valma, Lorne and Todd; their hearts and home were full. These times were very different from today. These were times of real challenge regarding climate and resources, everyone grew their own vegetables in their gardens, raised animals for food, and depended upon dog teams for transportation. During these years, Tommy envisioned building a fishing business and Sylvia was the strong, supportive, loving, and caring wife and mother behind him. Her steadfast commitment to her faith and family was the pillar of her life and a major reason for Tommy’s immense success. Sylvia was ready and willing to go wherever Tommy needed to support his dream.
Sylvia was the kind of woman who would do anything for anybody regardless of life circumstance. Her heart was the kindest and most generous of anyone in her generation. Her faith and commitment to God were unwavering. As Sylvia moved through life and grew to love the Lord more, she felt a desire to pursue a formal education in Theology at Queen’s College and completed a Certificate in Ministry Leadership at the age of 64. In following her own dreams and passions in her later years, she became a Lay Pastor with the Anglican Church in St. Carol’s, Ramea, St. Anthony, and the surrounding area. She loved this period of her life and truly thrived on leading others to Christ.
Sylvia loved her family and we all felt this immeasurably. Her hours were spent with those she loved. Her grandchildren were always in her presence and she found so much joy in having them around; all were welcome at any time. In later years, her love for Tommy was evidenced by the days and years she spent by his side even long after his awareness of her presence had faded. She never missed a day sitting by his side at the home during the 7.5 years he was there. If anyone was sick or hurt or just needed someone to talk to, we all knew we could call or visit mom/nan and she would drop whatever she was doing to attend to us. She would pray over us, put holy water on us, hug us, and love us beyond measure. There were even times when she flew to her children and grandchildren in other provinces during times of need to lend a helping hand. Her love was without measure.
Her most recent years were some of her most vibrant. She loved life to the fullest without restraint, and was free to pursue her earlier life goals. She focused on travelling to visit family in St. Anthony and Manitoba. She also returned to her love of education focusing on her goal of completing her degree in Theology. At the time of her passing, she had just one course remaining. Above all, she pursued her love of God and the church, often preaching to churches, and connecting with friends and prayer groups. Sylvia was not done, 85 years was not enough. She had further goals to achieve and we are all so immensely saddened by her passing. She left a void that cannot be filled. We find solace in knowing that she is now with her Lord and Saviour, her first love in life. We know that she was met with open arms in heaven and was no doubt running to be reunited with Owen and Tommy. We love you mom/nan and will cherish our beautiful memories until we can one day meet in Heaven.

Sending condolences to Sylvia’s family at this sad time. I was fortunate enough to see Sylvia quite frequently at Pleasantview Towers when I was there with my mother and she was there with Tommy. She was a thoughtful, kind, respectful, gentle soul who dedicated so much time to caring for Tommy.
The world has lost a remarkable human being. May your precious memories of her comfort you as you mourn her passing.
To the family of Sylvia and all who loved her. We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to you all. We met Sylvia at Pleasantview Towers when our Mom was there. She was truly a remarkable kind loving woman who loved her cup of tea and Tommy. She was a constant by his side every day. May her gentle soul rest in peace and may God comfort you all. God bless

May the almighty God give the entire family strength to go through this difficult time. Amen
Our prayers are with you today as you celebrate the end of Sylvia’s earthly journey and the continuation of her devine journey into the love of God. It was such a joy to have her in class at Queen’s. May she rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to all the family and friends of Sylvia, a great loss for us all but a great gain for Heaven. She was indeed known as a prayer warrior and I thank God for using her in such a way as He did.
I had known Sylvia from the time I gotten saved (born again experience as mentioned in John chapter 3), seven years ago this coming September 2026, she was attending International House of Restoration, a church started by God through pastor Mario. I eventually moved to another church and Sylvia had visited there as well when she found out that a PCA from the Long Term Care Center, who used to pray for Tommy, was attending the same church I was attending and led by pastor Emeka and Nnena Ezera.
She enjoyed the get togethers, fellowships, and outings, doing it all with the love of God.
Silvia is a model for all people to follow, loving the Lord with all her heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37)…. If we do this, we will be on our way to meeting together again soon enough.. amen.
Some verses I prayed many times over Sylvia, and now for all the family and friends, is from:
Numbers 6:24-26 NKJV
[24] “The LORD bless you and keep you;
[25] The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
[26] The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”‘
God bless you all immensely
My sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Mrs. Rose. She was a powerful, Spirit-filled woman of God whose life reflected Christ. Praying that the Lord’s presence will bring your family comfort, peace, and strength in the days ahead.
So sorry to hear that Mrs Rose passed away. Im praying for the familyand sending love. Mrs Rose held a special place in my heart. She was one if the first people who had me over to their place shortly after I arrived in St Anthony to start working asa RN at the hospital. She was a special lady. I met Marilyn a couple of years before went to Nfld. I got to know Todd, Owen and Mr Rose. I’ll never forget their friendship nor the memories. I take hope in fact that I’ll meet her again in heaven. May God of Comforts be with at this time and give you peace
When the news of Aunt Sylvia’s passing reached us, we were stopped completely in our tracks. Shock, unbelief, and a deep, aching sadness washed over us. In that moment, our hearts went straight to yours – Marilyn, Valma, Lorne, and Todd – your families, and all of Aunt Sylvia’s precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We grieve alongside you, and we want you to know that you are not alone in this.
Observing Aunt Sylvia’s life over the years we have known her, there is one thing we can say with complete assurance: love defined her life. She loved her children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her siblings, her extended family, her friends, and everyone God brought into her life. Most of all, she loved Jesus with her whole heart.
She also loved Uncle Tommy every single day. She carried the ache of missing him. She didn’t always say it out loud, but God saw it. He saw every quiet tear and every prayer she whispered when no one else was around. That kind of love doesn’t go away – it simply goes home.
Three years ago, Uncle Tommy left this world, and part of Aunt Sylvia went with him. Every single day, she kept his memory close – quietly and privately – the way you hold something too precious to put into words. The tears were real, the love was real, and they never faded.
Aunt Sylvia lived for her people. Marilyn, Valma, Lorne, and Todd, you were her whole heart. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her light up in a way nothing else could. Every hug mattered. Every small, ordinary day mattered. She held every one of you close and never took a single moment for granted.
Marilyn, Valma, Lorne, and Todd, she raised you with everything she had. She let you go with a full and proud heart. She wanted the very best for you, and she knew that the greatest treasure was not found in the things of this world, but in knowing Jesus. She pointed you to Him.
This is not goodbye. Death is not the end; it is a door. Aunt Sylvia believed that with all her heart, and today we hold on to the most beautiful truth of our faith: Aunt Sylvia, Uncle Tommy, and Owen are together again. No more missing one another. No more empty chairs or quiet tears. All of it has been healed. No more pain. No more goodbyes. Only peace, joy, and God’s glory.
Let yourselves cry, but do not grieve as those who have no hope. Your mom and grandma are not gone; she is simply home first. One day, God will keep His promise, and you will see her again—with her arms open, love shining in her eyes, waiting for you.
Hold on to each other. Love one another the way she loved each of you. Tell the stories, laugh through the tears, and cherish the legacy of faith she leaves behind. This is not the end. It’s only the beginning.
With our love and deepest sympathy,

Sorry to hear of Sylvia’s passing. We have many memories of Sylvia and her late husband Tommy.
We went to Pastor in St. Anthony in 1985 and Sylvia was a faithful member of the congregation.
We would love to be with you today but are unable to be there. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
2 Corinthians 5:8 says, “Absent from the body is present with the Lord.”
2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

my deepest condolence and prayers o your great loss. May the author of life give her eternal peace and comfort.
Todd and Stephanie, we are so sorry for the loss of your beloved mother and mother-in-law. Sylvia was a wonderful woman whose love for the Lord was evident in the way she lived her life. Her faith was an inspiration, and her kindness touched the lives of so many. Her husband and family meant the world to her, and it was clear how deeply she was loved in return.
While your hearts are heavy with grief, I pray you will find comfort in knowing that Sylvia is now in the presence of the Savior she loved so dearly. May God surround you with His peace, strengthen you in the days ahead, and bring you comfort through the precious memories you shared together.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers, trusting that the Lord will sustain you and give you His peace.

I had Sylvia as a student in a couple of my courses at Queen’s College. What a wonderful and insightful student she was! She had a way of using stories of her own life experiences to shed light on difficult theological ideas for herself and for others! She really understood things from the inside out! She will be dearly missed at Queen’s. I am so disappointed that I will not be able to watch her formally graduate now! Condolences to all her family!
Laura, I am thinking of you and your family at this difficult time
May the memories of your Nan bring you comfort in years to come.

Rose Families,
Sending my sincere condolences in your Moms passing.
She was a beautiful soul.
Had many good chats over the years when we would see one another..
I was shocked when I saw her obituary.
Sending hugs to all🦋🫶
I was fortunate enough to be in Sylvia’s company just a few weeks ago at a family get-together. When she arrived it wasn’t long before she was sharing a hug and asking about our family back home to see how they were doing. Later that evening we had a lovely chat, shared a few laughs and she was so happy about her plans to come home to St. Anthony in a few weeks where she would finish up her university courses. She always showed genuine concern and love for everyone. I will be forever grateful for that chat and how she was able to refresh my memory of stories about growing up in St. Carol’s.
Sylvia was also like a grandmother to our son Gregory. It was easy to see that he was special to her and she always treated him like her own. She will surely be missed.
Sending our love and condolences to Sylvia’s family and friends as you prepare to lay her to rest.

My sincere condolences to all the family. I met Sylvia through sewing at the quilt shop. Together we worked on a christening gown for one of her grandchildren . Her love of Tommy and her children was obvious. It was a privilege to spend time with her , share stories and laughter. Keep your memories close.
