Thomas Moore Kennedy

August 21, 1940 to November 25, 2022

Obituary

With sadness for our loss but grateful for his long life we announce the passing of Thomas Moore Kennedy following a brief and serious illness.  He left us gently and quietly, just as he lived his life. Tom turned 82 in August. Tom was born in Curling, Newfoundland, to Rose Anne Moore Kennedy and Francis Richard Kennedy on August 21, 1940. He was educated at St. Bonaventure’s College and Memorial University while growing up in St. John’s. He was a beloved pharmacist and community leader and practiced Pharmacy until his 77th year having counted millions of pills and delivering thousands of Rx. He touched so many lives with compassion and no judgement and supported the most vulnerable in our community. In 1997 Tom was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia for his life commitment to pharmacy and community. Presented to pharmacists in North America, it recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and who take active roles in their communities. He worked in Labrador City and St. John’s and was the owner of Kennedy’s Family Drugs in Bay Bulls.

In 1962 he married Lorraine Martin. They loved each other for 42 years and raised five children and, shared the joy of seven grandchildren until her passing in 2004. So many memories from Maxse St., Bay Bulls and Port Blandford.

For the past 12 years Tom shared his life with his wife Mary Donovan. How lucky they each were to find love again. They shared a wonderful adventure together… travelling, golfing, gardening, and volunteer work in the company of family and wonderful friends.

Tom will be deeply missed by his children and their partners: Catherina Kennedy and Paul Kelly, Neysa Kennedy Dumas and Jean Claude Dumas, Tanya Kennedy Wall and Gordon Wall, Thomas and April Kennedy, Douglas Kennedy and Sarah Young, and son in law Garry Wall.

He loved his greatest joys, his grandchildren and their partners, with his entire heart: Ciaran Kelly, Kate Wall and Jesse Barker, Thomas Wall, Alexander Kennedy, Cameron Kennedy, Gavin Wall and Nikita Harvey, and Jack Kennedy and Abby Murphy.

Tom was loved and will be missed by Mary’s son, daughter and her partner, and grandchildren: Brian Donovan, Karen Donovan and Herb Ivany, and, grandchildren who knew him as Mr. Tom, Spencer Ivany and Madison Donovan.

One of nine children Tom was predeceased by his brothers Michael and Francis and brother-in-law Edward Fahey.  He is dearly loved by his sisters and, brothers and sisters in law: Alice and John Abbott, Rosemary Fahey, Roberta Kennedy-Gillespie; Betty Lou and Patrick Kennedy, Marilyn Kennedy, Cathy and Bill O’Keefe, Tessie Kennedy, Tess Kennedy and Betty Lou Martin.

Tom was blessed in his life with the love and friendship of so many nieces and nephews and cousins in Canada and the United States.  He was heartbroken at the passing of his niece Libby Abbott Holwell.

Tom’s message to Mary:

“People are lucky to love once in their lifetime.  I am so happy to have found love twice.”

Tom’s family will welcome visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Freshwater Rd. on Monday, November 28 and Tuesday, November 29, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm. (please wear a mask)

Doug and Family,

Deepest condolences on your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Savina

He was a kind gentleman.
Mary had a good eye.
They brought light into a room.
Thank you.

Just learned that Mr. Kennedy has passed and wanted to share my thanks for all he did and for who he was.

I worked at O’Mara Martin Drug Store for two years (’83-’85) and learned so much from Mr. Kennedy. He was knowledgeable, kind, supportive and practical with everyone who entered the store, especially vulnerable people. He was a leader who built community, always caring about how people were doing.

Thinking of his family and how proud he always was. What a credit each of you are to him, the best in him lives on.

Hold each other and your best memories close. Peace.

Catherina, so sorry to read of your dad’s passing. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time

The greatest effect of fine persons isn’t felt until after they’ve left your presence. Tom had a profound positive effect on thousands of people. Up until recent months , Tom would come to my office and we would chat for hours about our shared passion for collectibles, during this time he would always share stories about his family and his love for them was obvious. Tom was a great friend to our family during his years as Pharmacist in Bay Bulls and was always ready to extend credit where needed. He was a kind and quality human being. Sincerest Condolences.

Tom was one of the first people I met when I emigrated to here 42 years ago. Warm, kind, sincere and genuine. That was Tom.

Larry and I are sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. A very kind and gentle man. After we returned from Italy one year Tom introduced me to Vivaldi’s music, giving me a CD that I keep in my car. Despite being musically challenged, I listen to it often, especially when I want to lift my spirits, but I have to be careful I don’t drive off the road with the passion and joy of this music..
Larry loved his presence on the guy’s get-away golf trips to Mont Tremblant.
We are still in AZ but hope to see you Mary when we are home for Christmas.. Condolences to all of his family.

For Thomas Martin Kennedy and family, everyone at Astro Hill was saddened to hear of your father’s passing. We send lots of love and care to you all in this time and offer below a small poem of what he might say to you all.

A Letter From Heaven

When tomorrow starts without me
And I’m not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry
The way you did today;
While thinking of the many things
We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me
As much as I love you;
And each time that you think of me,
I know you’ll miss me too.

When tomorrow starts without me,
Don’t think we’re far apart
For every time you think of me,
I’m right here in your heart.

-David M Romano

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Mr. Kennedy. He was always so kind, pleasant and thoughtful. A true gentleman.

Mary and members of the Kennedy family especially Alice who was in my cardiac rehab class some five years ago. I’ve known Tom since our days at St. Bon’s though he was a few years ahead of me..
He always presented himself as a gentleman, caring and thoughtful. I have been a volunteer at VOWR over forty years. About thirty years ago while out for a lunch break walk I ran into Tom, after a pleasant chat he reached into his pocket and gave me a very generous donation for the station.. He said you. Look after this for me. He was the. Salt of the earth. May Tom’s gentle soul rest in God’s eternal peace.
