It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Una Grace Skanes (née Rees), age 87, who passed away peacefully on September 30, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on Bell Island, Una was the daughter of the late Ella and William Rees. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Skanes, her special companion, Jack Hancock, and her daughter-in-law, Judy Skanes.
Una will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Janet (Shaun) Brister, and her son, Keith (Doreen) Skanes. She leaves behind her cherished grandsons, David (Danielle) and Ryan (Amy), and her precious great-grandchildren, Allie, Preston, Grayce, Abigail, and Parker, and her fur grandbaby, Hershey, who brought great joy and love into her life. She will also be deeply missed by her special friend, Sharon Jones. Una leaves behind a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, all of whom will treasure the memories they shared with her.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff and friends at Ruby Manor for their kindness and care during Una’s time there. Family was at the heart of Una’s life. She will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the memories she created, and the special place she held in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
Public Visitation will take place from Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, NL on Sunday, October 4th from 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00-9:00PM.
Funeral Service will take place from The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, October 5th, 2026 at 2:00PM. Interment to follow from the St. Philip’s Anglican Cemetery, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, NL.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.

My sincere condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time. Una was a free spirit with a wicked sense of humor. She loved to have a good hearty laugh and tell a joke or two. She loved to participate in all activities at Ruby Manor and loved a good sing a long, arts and crafts, a game and a dance. Myself and the residents will miss her handing out candy and treats before the activities even started. I will miss her laugh and the many joys we shared together while she resided at Ruby Manor. May she rest in Peace.

Heartfelt condolences to all! Heaven has welcomed another beautiful angel. ❤️ Una was a wonderful lady!!! She would light up a room with her smile and personality. She was a dear friend to mom and mom is so glad she got to see her recently when she brought Una in the big top hat, like they use to wear years ago on the concerts. She wanted to put on a show at the place where she lived. The top hats were always a joy to watch at the old concerts. Good times!! Wonderful memories!! . Una made delicious tea buns and she could always brighten your day with a chuckle.
