It is with great sadness, yet also deep gratitude for a life well lived, that we announce that Valerie June Butt’s battle with vascular dementia has come to an end. Her bravery and dignity in the face of her illness were awe-inspiring. She passed away peacefully at home with those that she loved on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Valerie lived a life filled with love, kindness, and adventure. From her roots in Newfoundland to her time in British Columbia, she made homes in many different cities across Canada. She had a true passion for travel, exploring the beauty of Canada from coast to coast and creating treasured memories throughout the Caribbean. Whether close to home or halfway around the world, Valerie embraced every journey with curiosity and joy.

Those who knew Valerie knew that her family and friends were the very center of her life. Her husband of 63 years, Melvin, her daughter Janice, son Neil and grandchildren Annie and Jordan were always her priorities. She found happiness in bringing people together, sharing laughter over a wonderful meal, and creating lasting memories. She was happiest when surrounded by the people she loved.

Valerie had a gentle spirit and generous heart. She was the kind of person who listened more than she spoke, always offering a compassionate ear, thoughtful advice and quiet encouragement. She genuinely cared about others and found great fulfillment in helping people whenever she could.

She had a lifelong love of dogs, whose companionship brought her endless comfort and happiness. They held a special place in her heart throughout her life.

Valerie found beauty in the simple pleasures of life. She loved spending time outdoors, especially during the warm summer months, tending to her garden and nurturing her beautiful flowers. She was a gifted and creative woman who enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and making thoughtful handmade gifts for family and friends. Every stitch was made with love, and every gift reflected her generous nature. She also enjoyed shopping, decorating her home, and making every space feel warm and welcoming.

She appreciated life’s little indulgences-fresh lobster, chocolate, and ice cream were among her favourite treats-and she believed that good food was best enjoyed when shared with the people she loved most.

Valerie leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, creativity and unconditional love. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her listening heart, her adventurous spirit, and the countless ways she made life brighter for everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared, the memories she created, and the lives she touched will remain in our hearts forever.

Valerie was predeceased by her son Neil, parents Eric and Lucy Butt (nee Batstone), in laws Peter and Cavel Butt (nee Hynes), sister Muriel and husband Gerald, also brother in law Donald.

Left to mourn are husband Melvin Butt, daughter Janice (Mark), grandchildren Annie and Jordan (Olivia). Sisters Peggy (Junior), Myrtle, Marie. Sisters in law Maxine (Gord), Linda(Rendall), Mae (Laurie), Debbie (Rex), Gael (Jim), Bonnie (Dan) and brothers in law Lloyd (Doris), Randy, and Craig (Mary Ann). Many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she held dear and special friends Liz and Laurene.

We would also like to thank Dr. Hynes, all of our personal care workers and the Community Paramedic Team who guided us along the way.
