Viktor Stroumsky

Obituary

Viktor Stroumsky passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 9:00 pm, age 62, at Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He fought a brave battle with Lung cancer and never gave up hope. He never complained or blamed, he never felt sorry for himself; always hopeful and optimistic. He leaves behind to mourn him three children, Ana Koren (Derek Locke), Viktoria Stroumsky (Jackson Khalili) and Vesselin Stroumsky (Gavin Fong) and six beautiful grandchildren that he cherished dearly, Annika, Davis, Nikolai, Ronan, Skarlette, and Kalina. His family in Bulgaria who were not able to be here but will miss him dearly are his mother Maria Kostova, his sister Valentina Bitrakova (Metodi) and children Ljuba and Alexander

Viktor was born on October 31, 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria and with his family immigrated to Gander, Newfoundland in 1990 in search for a better life. He then moved to Toronto, Ontario from 1991-2013 and spending the remainder of his life back in St. John’s. In his 62 years, he wore many hats including pizza aficionado, tradesman and winemaker. He was a fisherman, hunter and always the staple of any community bringing food and joy wherever he stayed.

He spent his younger years as a lifeguard on the Black Sea, showing tourists the beauty of Bulgarian life and culture. As a young man, Viktor had an entrepreneurial spirit and worked hard to provide a means for his family and an opportunity to move to Canada for a better future for his children. He has been the rock of our family. His unwavering desire to work hard and contribute, incredible work ethic, his calm demeanor and his big heart is how he’ll always be remembered. His countless friends around the world are an example of the kind of man that he was. ‘Salt of the earth’ as they say!

Words cannot express our gratitude to the amazing staff at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre who gave him hope and prolonged his life so that we can build many more memories. A special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre who provided comfort and care in his last few weeks. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation in Viktor’s name to either of these institutions.

It is our family’s hope to have his cremated remains brought to Bulgaria in 2022 so that along with the rest of his family and friends abroad we can celebrate his life.
