Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Virginia Spencer, a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend. She departed this life on December 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Guyana, South America, Virginia carried the richness of her heritage throughout her life, while also embracing the beauty of Newfoundland and Labrador, the place she called home for many years.
Virginia was a remarkable woman with a sharp mind and a natural talent for math and numbers, which she utilized in her many careers and entrepreneurial ventures. Her intelligence and resourcefulness were matched only by her strength, boundless love, and a heart filled with kindness.
Her warmth and quick wit left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Known for her humour, resilience, and unshakable determination, Virginia embodied a “never give up and never let it get me down” attitude that inspired all who knew her. She created a life defined by love, perseverance, and an enduring commitment to her family and community.
Virginia’s culinary talents made every family gathering unforgettable, and her love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She will be remembered for her legendary meals, delightful desserts, and the joy she brought to every occasion. Whether it was playing Chinese Checkers, Scrabble, or Dominos with her loved ones, or enjoying weekly card games with friends, Virginia’s presence was always uplifting.
In her younger years, Virginia loved dancing with her husband and friends. More recently, she enjoyed romantic comedies, as well as her favourite shows, The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives.
Virginia is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Spencer; her loving children, Byron (Nicky) Spencer and Nicole Spencer; her treasured grandchildren, Alexia (Nick) Pardy, Alecia Spencer, and Robert Matteliano; and her precious great-grandchildren, Autumn, Ashlynn, and Aiden. She is also fondly remembered by her extended family and countless friends in Guyana, Newfoundland, and beyond.
Virginia loved the vibrant beauty of nature, delighting in the flowers of Newfoundland and the tropical blooms of Guyana. Her adventurous spirit, deep connection to her cultural roots, and devotion to her loved ones made her a shining light in the lives of all who knew her.
The family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, at 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday December 16, from 2-4 and 7-9.
A celebration of her life will take place on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Together, we will honour her incredible journey and the love she shared so generously.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the local food bank in her name would be deeply appreciated.
Her hands held ours with care and grace, just as her love held us all. She will forever remain in our hearts—a beacon of hope, love, and strength.
We will always cherish the memories we shared with you, Vergie/Mom/Nanny. We know you’re waiting for us up there with a turkey and Jiggs dinner, curry chicken, magic leaf ribs, chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, and a cup of tea.

Thoughts and prayers are with all the family during this time of loss. I remember Virginia living here in Fortune when I was a very young girl & all the family. May the precious memories you reflect upon give you great comfort in the days ahead.
My Aunt Virginia was always more like a big sister to me than an Aunt. She always treated me like one of her family whenever we were together, whether camping on Rice Lake, camping at Golden Sands, at her house on Wildwood, in Fortune, Pouch Cove, Chapel Cove, Merrymeeting on Holyrood, walking with her and her granddaughters with my girls at Salmon Cove Sands… She was a great cook and made good ‘lassy’ sandwiches for a cold moose hunting walk. She treated my family like her kids and grandkids. Her warmth and sense of humour and positivity was infectious. She always opened her heart and you never had to wonder what she was thinking because she would share her thoughts freely. I will miss her dearly. I’m glad she was married to my Uncle Bob because they were inseparable and completed each other. I am and we all are better for having known such a wonderful human being.. We will cherish her memory and all the moments we shared with her.

Aunt Virginia was a warm loving person with a big smile. She left her home and came to Toronto where she met and Married my uncle. She grew up in a big warm loving family and joined another big warm loving family. Aunt Virginia enriched our lives. We watched her bring Byron and Nicole into the world. Then they left for Newfoundland. What a brave thing for her to do! I always admired her bravery for making those big moves. In Toronto or Newfoundland when we visited again she always had that big beautiful welcoming smile. I will always remember her with love and admiration.

A beautiful soul, funny spirit, always made us welcome any time of day or night. She immediately included Nicholas and us in family gatherings ands any events. It was a pleasure to decorate their Christmas trees for a few years. Even though I might have broke a few things. She didn’t care, it was always a laugh a cup of tea and those delicious chocolate chip cookies.
Even 8 years ago when having my own health battles they both made me feel welcome and always dropped by with something homemade. Which is always good for the soul. Even in this later years I didn’t visit much, you were always on my mind in my heart and prayers. May you rest in peace sweet Virginia. For the family our sincere condolences, cherish memories made. Bob and family ,so sorry to read of Virginias passing .please accept my deepest condolences .Hold tight the good memories for that is what will see all of you through the sad days and months ahead .I always tell the story of her going into her kitchen and bringing out a small plate of fluffy white rice and her homemade curry for me to try .i been hooked on curry ever since ,I could smell it when I walked into the store and question what the smell was amazing ..Take care
