I encountered a good soul when I came from away and parked my arse in July of St. john’s in 2015. I called one of 2 numbers for a clean room for rent out of the local paper and Wade Learning answered my phone-call. He and I became instant friends immediately and as well as after I was carted away by an ambulance to the hospital shortly after I had paid him his first months rent and was standing outside on his front stoop, smoking a cigar, thinking life is great AND watching them film the last episode of Republic of Doyle which included an excellent smash-up on Mullock. It was a strange and wonderful night to me., except for the ambulance shit, which turned out to be my 2nd panic attack of my life.. I returned well and good to my new place to live on Mullock and what turned out to be my new good friend and proceeded to have a most wonderful laugh and cajole with this interesting and proud man for the next 3 months. I will say that by my observation, there were a few goofs who took advantage of this kind person who was now my friend. He was even okay with that though. I noticed that as long as I was there, as long as Wade had a good friend to speak with comfortably to and with, he would then thrive with life and not feel badly about his past as much as I suspected. I took great and true solace and comfort in knowing that when Wade and I were having a drink and musing about how life delivers shit or shinola, that we were alright with having a bit of each as long as the ability to laugh and care about others we love as well as strangers in need of a rest from life’s toils was recognized and validated, My name is Bruce Archibald and I count Wade as the top of my list of wonderful souls who can be found fewer and fewer on this wonderful and strange planet as we trod onwards seeking love, respect, and care from and for everyone else. I now apologize for my ramble but Wade would certainly laugh, approve , and appreciate these words and thoughts for his legacy. By the way, another thing I observed by knowing Wade. He didn’t scream it, he didn’t say it in exact words, but he loved his Mother, his family and OH did he love his sisters …..
Rest easy my friend Wade, as you now laugh and giggle in the great evermore.
Bruce Archibald
