It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Everett Ludlow at the Dr. Leonard Miller Centre in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 30. Much loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, teacher, and mentor.
Born March 15, 1942 in Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island, the eldest son of Arthur and Winnifred (Brett) Ludlow.
Predeceased by his parents, and his daughter Kimberley (Ludlow) Mercer.
Leaving to mourn his loving wife and partner for 37 years, Mary-Kaye MacFarlane, his daughter Heather (Paul Vigneau) and her mother Shirley (Dave Glynn), grandsons Braeden Mercer, Zachary Mercer, and Joshua Vigneau, brothers Keith Ludlow (Anita – deceased), and Earl Ludlow (Valerie), stepsons Peter Roil and Stephen Roil. Wayne will also be dearly remembered by a large circle of family, friends, and colleagues.
Wayne completed his early education in Joe Batt’s Arm and in 1958 he enrolled at Memorial University where he received undergraduate degrees in Science and Education, and a graduate degree in Education. He later completed a Doctorate in Education at the University of Northern Colorado.
Wayne was a teacher and administrator at schools in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, and Fortune, and in the early 1970s he accepted a position with the Faculty of Education at Memorial University. In 1983 he was appointed as Dean of Student Affairs and Services, a position he held until his retirement in August 2000.
Wayne was many things: a proud Newfoundlander, family historian, accomplished accordion player, avid reader, outdoorsman, tinkerer, hobby mechanic, traveller, and an active volunteer with the Janeway Foundation, Crow’s Nest Officers’ Club, and the local branch of the Newfoundland and Labrador Naval Association of Canada. Wayne’s thirst for knowledge was unending; he was a life-long learner.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the care teams at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic and the Miller Centre for their compassionate care of Wayne and his family.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, April 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Wayne’s memory may be made to the MacFarlane-Ludlow Scholarship at Memorial University, or the Cancer Care Foundation.

I met Wayne when involved in Student Politics at MUN. My recollections of working with him are centered on his support and guidance to us as young leaders who had our grand plans and ambitions. He was able to provide that valuable assistance while allowing us to pursue our mission, at times with some course-correcting advice! Our families’ connection goes back to the 1950’s and early 1960’s when my father was an Anglican priest in Fogo. Please accept my sincere condolences.
Condolences to the family. I just learned of Dean Wayne Ludlow passing a few days ago, I meet Dean Ludlow as a student and I found him extremely supportive because of personal issue I was going through. Dean Ludlow embody the very meaning of what a positive student experience is suppose to be. Dean Ludlow not only left a lasting impression on the students, but he set the bar on how educators can assist and help students. He was a true educator and passionate on what he did.
With a sad heart, I send my sincere condolences to all of Wayne’s family for their great loss. I haven’t seen Wayne (Mr Ludlow as I still think of him) for a lot of years. He was the heartthrob of our high school years, when on the first day of school, he showed up in his little red two seater car. In a nutshell he was the teacher that we all loved and never forgot….handsome, Kind, friendly, fair, an exceptional teacher and a very special human being. May all your special memories of him console you at this difficult time. 😢
An absolute gem. Godspeed sir
Mr. Earl Ludlow & all the family: So sorry to have just read about your brother. I will always remember how wonderful you were to my dad – Hubert Baldwin who worked with NL Power and passed away in 2008. You were kind enough to have one of the company’s trucks like dad drove cleaned and lead his funeral; he would have been so proud and we were all so thankful for your kindness. Our sympathy and prayers are with you all. Take care.
Earl, Valerie and family,
My deepest sympathy on Wayne’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Earl and Keith
So sorry for your loss. Our deepest sympathy to all.

My condolences on the loss of this wonderful human being. While our paths did not cross until many years after I had graduated from MUN, our relationship was related to his role as Dean of Student Affairs. He impressed me as an honest, forthright and kind man who was totally dedicated to the protection of students at the institution.
Thinking of you all in this time of grief, from Katherine and family
Sincere condolences to Wayne’s family from another former educator with special reference to my old friend, Keith.
I am sorry to learn of Mr. LUDOOWS PASSING.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. I enjoyed the contact I had with him when I was a member of the Board of Regents of MUN. Wayne was also a fellow student in some of the Education classes from the early ”60’S. It was always a pleasure to see him. Condolences to the family.
Heather and Family
I’m very sorry to hear of Uncle Wayne’s passing. Uncle Wayne was a true educator and mentor and when it came to education, he was not one to let opportunities be lost. I say this based on my experience after graduating high school where I had my mind set on attending University, however, I was about 1% below the entry level grade average. Uncle Wayne did not waste any time driving to Topsail and meeting with me and laying out a plan to help move this forward. He arranged meeting with the school Guidance Counsellor and went through each subject grade and ended up getting support from the Counsellor to recommend that I be enrolled in Memorial University with a few first-year Foundation Courses to improve my grades. I always felted indebted to Uncle Wayne for him taking the time to help and he wasn’t going to let this slide. After my enrolment I recall him saying to me…” well now it is up to you”. I did graduate from University with B.Sc. (honors). We didn’t have much contact after my graduation with me moving out west to work. There was one pleasant surprise in the early 1980’s, I think it was when he was Dean of Student Affairs. We had a good group of MUN Alumni in Calgary at the time and Wayne came out to our Alumni dinner and gave us an update on the University, it was great to see him. He was always great to talk with and he was always interested in what was going on in your life. The last time I saw Wayne was another sad time with Kim’s passing. I will miss him.
Our condolences to you and family.
Love, Doug and Nancy Hibbs and family
To Mary- Kaye and all family members we extend our deepest sympathies. We were very much shocked and saddened to read of Wayne’s passing. Our brother Reg always spoke very highly of him and was delighted to have him as a neighbor and friend on Conway Crescent. Reg knew he could count on Wayne to keep an eye to things when out of town and of course they had shared passions of tinkering on projects and reminiscing about days and times of the past. Little did either of them know that cancer would take them both within a few years of one another. Know that we are thinking of your family at this sad and difficult time.
Reg’s siblings- Noreen, Jim, Stephanie, Jack and families

My memories of Wayne go back to my undergraduate days in the Faculty of Education. I was blessed to complete a formative semester at Harlow, a program Wayne helped manage. He was always supportive and encouraging of students, and I remain grateful. Our paths crossed many times since then, and I always was impressed with Wayne’s character and commitment to Memorial University.
My condolences to you and your family as you say goodbye to this fine gentleman.

I was so sorry to learn of Wayne’s passing. He was a Newfoundlander and Labradoriian to the core and was very passionate about Memorial University. His in-depth understanding of both, along with his intelligence, common sense, compassion and professionalism made him a wonderful person to work with and to seek advice from. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was a great leader. . He will be missed.
Mary-Kaye, Barbara and I share your loss and acknowledge that the last 2 years must have been very difficult for both you and Wayne. I regret I am not physically able to attend Carnells today (Thursday). Barbara and I want you to know we will be forever grateful for the help and advice you gave to our daughter Janet when she was a student at MUN. She is now a Grandmother and serving with a team of Christian missionaries and humanitarian workers in S. Africa.
So sad to hear of Wayne’s passing.. a true gentleman, leader, thinker and doer. As dean of students at MUN he set a high standard. We all learned a lot just from watching him and listening to how he dealt with people, with challenges and with opportunities. Always professional, always convivial. A great sense of humour. A model for anyone who strives to be a leader.
Condolences to Mary-Kaye and the rest of Wayne’s family. He was a remarkable man.

Sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. Sending our sincere condolences & thinking of You during this time of sorrow. No doubt You have lots of precious memories to cherish.
Melvin (first cousin) & Verna Decker
Mary-Kaye I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Ludlow. It was such a pleasure to work with him in administration at MUN and I was fortunate to have him as my mentor and supervisor in student teaching. He was encouraging and kind…and always a lot of fun. I recall him coming to observe me in the classroom at CNA. I was a bag of nerves. He sat there all professional, stone faced and I couldn’t read him. I thought I had bombed. Finally when class filtered out, and in a delayed response, he said, I dunno about that … but I guess I’ll have to give you an A! My sincere sympathy to you all on your sad loss.
Mr Ludlow’s support was instrumental to my teaching career. His kindness and support will be forever appreciated and remembered.. My deepest condolences to his family; such a wonderful man to celebrate.
Mary-Kaye and family,
My memories of Wayne include: his fierce loyalty to MUN, students, family and friends, strong opinions, a kind heart and very quick wit. My travels to St John’s were made better by the great business and greater fellowship…… I still have the book on my coffee table that he gave me many years ago.
Rest in peace Wayne.
Mary-Kaye, Heather, and Family,
Sending sincere condolences to you all, and hope that your wonderful memories sustain you through the difficult days ahead.
I have many memories of the 15 years I worked with Dr. Ludlow. He attended my wedding in 1993, and was one of the first people called from the Grace General Hospital Recovery Room, after the birth of my son in 1996. Less than 24 hours later he came to the hospital to meet the newest addition of the Scott family.
We shared many milestones. Some joyous and some not. There were many happy times and some really hard days. There was lots of laughter, and on occasion, lots of tears.
When Dr. Ludlow retired in 2000, it was one of the hardest days for me at Memorial. I respected the fact that he wanted to retire, he deserved it, but that didn’t help the feeling of a profound sense of loss. Nothing would be the same. 37 years later from when I began at Memorial, I was set to retire. Dr. Ludlow wrote me a beautiful letter, and he felt it was high time I called him Wayne. I never could. He would always be Dr. Ludlow to me.
I have no doubt that he is playing the accordion, and teaching all the angels in heaven how to play the spoons and ugly stick.
Rest in peace Dr. Ludlow.
So saddened to hear of Wayne’s passing. I was so fortunate to have worked in his Student Affairs office back in the early 80’s on a temporary position. It was one of my favourite jobs. Wayne and his team were so dedicated to their mission. My condolences to his families. He will be missed. Such a kind, gentle man. RIP
Mary-Kaye, I was so sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. I didn’t personally know Wayne during our time at Memorial but we often passed in the halls (usually in the Phys Ed building while one of us was just leaving, the other just going to, the Field House at lunchtime) giving a nod and smile of recognition to each other. Then one day you walked into the Crow’s Nest with that gentleman on your arm and we were formally introduced. As I got to know him I found he was exactly the way he looked; that is kind, soft(and well)-spoken and truly a gentle man – with a magnificent head of hair! May you take solace here in the many tributes to Wayne from all who knew him.
Take care,
Linda Gaborko

For over 40 years Wayne has been an important part of the lives of our family. While he was pivotal in Brian’s professional life, it has been his friendship we have valued most. From our many Sunday brunches, to our riverboat cruise, to our wonderful conversations, there are many memories that will keep Wayne in our minds.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Clyde Harris
retired C.E.P. Dept.
Very sorry to learn of Wayne’s passing. He was a wonderful colleague with great wit and intelligence. I have many fond memories of my discussions with Wayne. Please accept my sincere condolences.
Wayne was Dean of Student Affairs while I was with Housing, Food and Conference Services. Recollect going on “retreats” especially one in Lomond on west coast. It was for training but at the end of the day Wayne would break out his accordion and the “sensible foolishness” would begin. He treated me well and always kept telling me to call him “Wayne” and not Dr. Ludlow.. He was a good man. I always called him…Dr. Ludlow!
To Earl and family
We are saddened today to learn of the passing of your brother, Wayne. We offer our sincere condolences to you and all the Ludlow family.
Linda and Ed Murphy
I’m certain many will remember Dr.. Ludlow kindly. As one of a group of Memorial University Education Students completing an internship in Harlow England way back in 1979 I was fortunate to be under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Ludlow. I remember well his leadership and encouragement as well as his humour. A man of substance you could hang your anchor on. It was always a pleasure to run into him over the years, be it at a local restaurant or on the Ferry to Fogo Island. His contributions and influences upon educators in our province is a legacy to be proud of.
Earl and Family ,My sincere condolences in the passing of your brother. May you find strength and comfort in your memories during this difficult time.
Mary-Kaye, Peter, Stephen and families — sending big hugs your way. I can’t remember a time before Dr. Ludlow was part of the Johnston family circle — I enjoyed every conversation I had with him over the years, and when I moved into a student affairs leadership role myself, his leadership legacy had a strong influence on me. Thinking of you all in this difficult time.
To Dr Ludlows family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss.
I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr Ludlows passing.
Dr Ludlow, with his family, was our supervisor for my internship in Harlow in 1979. Harlow was a wonderful experience, made even more special by meeting and learning from Dr Ludlow. His love of learning, and teaching, was contagious. In every encounter with him, I always came away with something positive. He brought so much to our experience in Harlow.
I bumped into him over the years and always felt as though no time had passed.
He was a wonderful person, so encouraging and warm. He was a very positive influence in my life! He will be missed.
Very sad to learn of Wayne’s death. I didn’t know of his illness.
As a MUN colleague, i always found him to be in great spirits and good humour. Moreover, he had the ability to be effective as well.
People who worked with Wayne were always quick to say they enjoyed their time with him.
Someone with varied interests, he was always trying to sell me the unique clocks he made! And I had an interest in old British sports cars too.
As is too often the case, after retirement our paths crossed too infrequently.
.
Please accept my condolences. Dr. Ludlow (as he was always known to me), was a dear friend of our family and was an a well-loved and respected champion of the students at Memorial University. His legacy will be one of humor, kindness and support.
Mary-Kaye and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. He was such a caring and generous person. I was Head of Student Services at Grenfell when Wayne was Dean of Student Affairs. He was a wonderful mentor, supporter & colleague. I always appreciated his advice. He encouraged us to always take our work seriously, but not ourselves, and was not above engaging in some ‘sensible foolishness’ from time to time! He will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences.
Mary Sparkes
Braeden and Zachary,
Sorry for the loss of your grandfather. He was a good man. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

Our condolenses to the Ludlow families at this sad time. Our prayers are with you.
My condolences go out to all members of Wayne’s family. Although Wayne and I knew each other for many years we only began to know each other to a greater extent after we both had retired from Memorial University. We had so many things in common I came to think of Wayne as one of my dearest friends. My sadness of having lost his friendship, wisdom, humor and kindness is nothing to that of his family to whom I send my deepest sympathy.
Heather and family,
I’m so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing today. Hold on to all your good memories to help you during these difficult days. I hope you find comfort and peace. Thinking of you Heather, may your dad now rest in peace.

I first met Wayne, Shirley, Kim and Heather during my education internship in Harlow, England in 1974. He was a great professor, teacher and mentor. Anytime we bumped into each other these past 50 years there were always wonderful conversations about our mutual interests, he was so well respected in the university community and has had significant influences in the lives of many of our Province’s educators.
Heather and the Ludlow family, my sincere condolences. May your memories and I know you have many bring you comfort and smiles.Linda Hibbs

Lorraine and I were saddened to learn of Wayne’s passing. We were aware that his health had been failing recently, but only after a long and productive life. By all accounts, he was both a gentleman and a scholar.
On a personal level, I will remember warmly Wayne’s relationship with my sons and his willingness to provide them with sage advice and support if it was needed or requested.
Our sincere condolences to all who loved him or knew him well.

I was so sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. I have so many memories of visiting Fogo Island as a child when Mom and Dad (Charles and Lucy Freake) would spend summer holidays there. We would always take a jaunt to Joe Batt’s Arm to visit the cousins and have a cup of tea with uncle Arthur and Aunt Winnie….Wayne always kept in touch by way of his very newsy email at Christmas time. My sympathy is with you at this difficult time. May all your memories of Wayne bring you comfort.

We are so sorry to hear Wayne’s passing. Our thoughts are with you Mary-Kaye and the family.
To Mary Kate and the Ludlow Family,
I so sorry to hear the news of Wayne’s passing.
I was a student at Fortune Collegiate during the years he was the principal there.
He would have me come by on Saturday morning to mow his lawn and have lunch with his family when we would enjoy a bowl or two of pea soup.
Over the years, our paths have crossed manytimes recalling his days at Fortune.
When I was a student at Queen’s College, Wayne was a member of a diocesan committee and was present for a presentation we did. I said to the students, “you see that man there! I put many grey hairs on his head”.! He heard it and his reply, was “Stop!! I can tell many stories about you”! I have always considered him a friend and mentor.
My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
May he now rest in peace and rise in glory.
I am saddened to see Dr. Ludlow has passed away. In the 1970’s he was a wonderful teacher, mentor and friend to me in his role as supervisor of student teachers. He demonstrated a great example of warmth and effective professionalism.
Thank you Dr. Ludlow. You were perfect!
I am thinking of family members during this difficult time.

Shocked to hear of Wayne’s passing. We were both from Joe Batt’s Arm, and colleagues at Memorial University. Both Jean and I always spoke highly of him, and appreciated his professionalism. We send our deepest condolences to his family. Jean and Lloyd Brown.
In my career I have encountered many a strong and influential character, Dr. Wayne Ludlow was one of those. We first ran into each other when I was a young university politician and he was the Dean of Students. You can imagine……but fortunately we hit it off having discovered he was of the ” Ludlows of Fogo Island” and I was of the “Dawe and Anthony families of Fogo Island”. No sweat after that!
We survived that foray into student politics and our paths intermingled over next few years as I pursued my career. He was a great source of advice and a mentor although we often had to agree to disagree. In 1996 I counted myself amongst the lucky few to belong to the first ever Masters of Education class, specializing in student services championed by Wayne. We were ” Ludlows Privateers”. Libby Chaulk Candice Ennis-Williams Paul D. Smith and others. He championed the most excellent life and work balance philosophy of ” SENSIBLE FOOLISHNESS”.
He was a great person. So much to say, so much to miss, words escape me, the sadness does not. RIP sir……
