It is with great sadness that we share the passing of William Robert Chafe of Petty Harbour/Maddox Cove on September 24, 2025. Bill passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and under the great care of the staff of the Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department.

Bill was predeceased by his parents Roy and Hazel (Whitten) Chafe, his brother Cecil Chafe, his sister June (Chafe) Earle, and his beloved son Howard Chafe.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 59 years Elizabeth (Pynn); sons Greg (Denise), Robert (Chris), and Jason (Julie); stepson Lance Pynn (Winnie); his grandchildren Andrea O’Gorman (Joe), Nicholas Chafe (Dragon), Connor Chafe, and Samantha Chafe; his great grandchildren Colton and Grady O’Gorman, and Karma Kobvack; and the huge Chafe family and a big circle of friends.

Bill was a legend in construction in eastern Newfoundland. He worked in the industry from the time he was a boy, and eventually became one of the founders, co-owners and president of Beaver Truss Company. There he put the roofs on thousands of houses and commercial properties across the Avalon and beyond.

He was the third eldest child of twelve, so family was always important to him. He adored his brothers and sisters and their spouses; a closer and more supportive family you could not find. His proudest achievement was the family he built with his wife Betty. He relished in all of the accomplishments of his sons and their children.

He loved hockey and baseball, and he delighted in his Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Blue Jays. He was foolish, fun loving, not one to give a serious answer to anything. He was an avid reader, a storyteller, a talker. He loved people, and, for his humour and gentle nature, people loved him back.

The family wish to thank the staff at the Emergency Department of the Health Sciences Centre, as well as the staff of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Home, and homecare worker Wendy Kallergis, for their incredible and gentle care of our husband and father in his final months.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, September 28th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  Funeral Service will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on  Monday September 29th, 2025  at 2 pm with interment to follow from the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you make a donation to the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in honour of June Earle or Howard Chafe.

My older brother Howard, my mother Kay and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Chafe family at this time of sorrow and loss. Billy used to call our home asking about our late father Mac who passed away from dementia back in 2020. My brother and Billy’s late son Howard are the same age and would frequently be confused for each other in school. Billy was a fine gentleman who was so kind and caring. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
