William David Mallam (Dave), died on May 21, 2025 in St. John’s.

Dave was retired after a career as a teacher. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, fly fishing, canoeing, and woodworking, even once crafting his own cedar strip canoe. He also dedicated his time to volunteering, and playing, coaching, and watching sports. He would never miss an opportunity to cook a turkey dinner. Some of his most cherished times were spent enjoying Florida beaches and Quebec City with his wife Edwina.

Dave is deeply missed by Edwina, his daughter Katie (Luke Gaulton) and granddaughter Anna-Kate, who affectionately called him ‘Grumpy’.

Predeceased by his parents William and Ruby (Powell) Mallam, and his beloved dog Trooper.

Thank you to family, friends, especially Edwina’s bridge crowd and morning walking buddies, and neighbours Wanda and Felix, for all the love and support during this difficult time.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, May 25 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m. The service will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend.

Donations to the Gathering Place or a charity of personal choice gratefully accepted.

Edwina
I am in shock! I am so sorry for your loss.
I had many a meeting etc with Dave, and other St. John’s representatives at Nlta or your home. We served on Many boards and committees. He was my shoulder to lean on or ask questions,. His contributions will be missed greatly. He was a dedicated , hard worker. He had a shoulder for teachers and he was an extremely kind and caring person. No one will ever be able to replace him. If there is anything I can do to help, please call me (Marilyn Bennett} 709 2213386.

There is no one can replace Dave at NLTA functions / meetings or Dave as a friend

VERY SORRY TO FIND DAVE’S OBITUARY.. IT WAS MANY YEARS SINCE I’VE SEEN DAVE AND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS. HE WAS A VERY LIKEABLE PERSON AND READING THROUGH OTHER CONDOLENCES ONE REALIZES HOW MUCH HE WAS APPRECIATED.. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND.

Wow, I had no idea.

Mr. Mallam was always one of my favourite teachers as well.

I remember the feud he had with Mr. Laite all the way through my time at I.J. Samson in the early 80s. You could tell that they were the best of friends, but that didn’t stop them from insulting each other every chance they got.

One of my favourite memories was watching him walk past our science class with a cup of coffee one day. He just poked his head in and smiled at us, and then disappeared. It wasn’t until about an half hour later that he returned, realizing that that was the class he should have been in all along! It was priceless.

I’ll never forget him. One of the Greatest.

Edwina and family:

Love Betty & Bob

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Mallum. I had found his phone number a few months back and intended to call him and tell him the wonderful teacher he was! He taught me almost 40 years ago and I will never forget the impact he had on me as a person and my education. I cried when I realized he was gone and my two grown boys said “oh no, not that teacher you loved and told us about”, even my children were impacted by him. Every teacher forward, in my life and theirs, was measured against Mr. Mallum. He truly made a difference in my life. I never got to make that phone call. I hope knew how special he was. Condolences to you all. He is going to be a big loss.

Edwina and Family,
Our sincere condolences at this time of profound loss..

Sad to hear of his passing, Mr. Mallam was my Jr. high teacher almost 20 years ago, and I can still vividly remember his classes to this day. He always kept me engaged, and laughing. He had an impact on how I viewed teaching and the classroom. He will be remembered and missed. My condolences during this time.

Thinking of you Edwina at this sad time & sending you & your family sincere condolences. I have nice memories of Dave so long ago. RIP

Edwina & Katie
So sorry to hear of Dave’s passing.. My Thoughts & Prayers are with you during this difficult time.
RIP Dave

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Mallam’s passing. He was my teacher in Jr. High and I often went back to visit him in school when I was in High School. He was my favorite teacher and I thought of him often after IJ Samson closed down. Very fond memories of his teachings, life lessons, and grumpy scowl when we were being idiots. He will be greatly missed by all. My deepest condolences during this time to you all.

So sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Dianne (Dave’s first cousin) and Warren Stedman

Edwina and Katie, we are sorry to hear about Dave’s passing. His cheerful energy, and dedication will always be remembered.

We send our deepest condolences to Edwina, Kate, Luke, Anna-Kate and the Mallam family. We are so very sorry to hear of David’s passing.. The last time we saw David was at the family reunion in Heart’s Content. We had a wonderful visit with him. David was a kind hearted man with a warm smile and a great sense of humour.. He left this world far too soon and will be sorely missed

Words can’t convey the emotions of losing someone so loved so I won’t even try. David was my 6th grade fill in gym teacher and was the best looking teacher ever to grace Lawrence Coughlin. Every girl had a crush and imagine how pissed I was to be told he was my cousin. Thus began a life long practice of insulting one another whenever we met. Hope this little story gives you something to smile at. He will be missed .

Edwina. Condolences to you Katie and family. May Dave rest with the angels

Sincere condolences to the Mallam family and especially Kate and Edwina at this time of loss. So glad that we were able to share memories of our family at the reunion in Heart’s Content just a few years ago. David was some years younger than me but I vividly remember spending summer time in Hearts Content with Will and Ruby many years ago. David was a presence for sure.

I was so saddened to hear about Dave’s passing. Memories of teaching with him and his visits to my home are forever in my mind.

So sorry to hear of Dave’s passing – there aren’t many people in this world I share a surname with;. even though we are cousins, I actually didn’t meet him for the first time until we ended up sharing a class in university and another cousin introduced us. He was the sort of person that one took and instant like to and I very often heard his former students speak very highly of him. My sincere condolences to you all.

Edwina,
Please accept my condolences on Dave’s passing. It is always so sad to see him go. Speaking of Dave often will help keep nice memories alive.

Edwina I am saddened to hear that Dave has passed. He was a friend since high school, through university and that friendship was enhanced during our teaching careers.
RIP Dave.
