Winnifred (Winnie) Best, born in Bonavista in 1939, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Winnie lived a life filled with kindness, compassion, and deep love for those around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose gentle spirit and caring heart touched everyone who knew her. She found her greatest happiness in the simple joys of life — time spent with family, tending to her beautiful gardens, and caring for the animals she loved so dearly.

An avid gardener, Winnie could often be found outdoors surrounded by flowers and nature, something that brought her peace and happiness throughout her life. She had a special connection with animals and a soft heart for every creature she encountered. Her warmth, patience, and nurturing nature were reflected in everything she did.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William (Bill); her parents, Alexander and Lavinia; her sisters, Margaret and Mabel; and her brothers, Bernard, Wilfred, and Gordon. Leaving to mourn and forever cherish her sister, Gladys; her children, Richard Street, Trevor Best, Denise (Doug) Loder, and Stephanie (George) Carter; and her adored grandchildren, Ava, Seyla, Maddox, Gavin, and William, who brought endless pride, laughter, and joy to her life.

Winnie will be remembered for her warm smile, her gentle nature, and the unconditional love she gave so freely. Her home was a place of comfort and welcome, and her family was always at the center of her world. The memories she created, the lessons she shared, and the love she gave will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

The family would also like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff and Dr. Penney at Agnes Pratt Home for the exceptional care, compassion, and kindness shown to Winnie throughout her time there, as well as for the care they provided to our father during his residency. Your support, dedication, and comfort meant more to our family than words can express.

Though deeply missed, Winnie’s love and spirit will continue to live on through her family, her gardens, and the many beautiful memories she leaves behind.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, May 28th from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Carnell’s Chapel at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 29th.

Flowers are gratefully accepted, and donations in Winnie’s memory can be made to Park Avenue Pentecostal Church.
