Harold (Harry) Raymond Steele, O.C.

June 9, 1929 to January 28, 2022

Obituary

Passed peacefully in Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence, St. John’s, NL on Friday, January 28, 2022.  Harry was born in Musgrave Harbour, NL, the son of the late Stanley and Kathleen (Power) Steele.  He was immensely proud of his NL roots and that pride never wavered.  Roots and values that were well established as a lad in Musgrave Harbour ultimately led to his strong sense of responsibility, ambition, hard work, compassion and “not being afraid to hire someone smarter than you”.  Regardless of his success and where business took him, Newfoundland and Labrador would always be home.

He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 68 years, Catherine (nee Thornhill), his sons Peter (Brenda), Rob and John (Darlene); grandchildren Kate (Geoff Robb), Diana, Laura (Colin Kaiser), Hayley, Eric, Wyatt and Sofia, and great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Lauchlan Kaiser.  Also survived by his sister-in-law Florence (Thornhill) Dobson and brother-in-law Roland J. Thornhill (Bonnie); nephews Geoff Tulk, Barry and David Dobson, Christopher and Jeff Thornhill, Paul and Andrew Thornhill.  He was predeceased by his sister Audrey Tulk, brothers-in-law, Kenneth Tulk, Cyril Thornhill and George Dobson, sister-in-law, Sylvia (Mercer)Thornhill and niece, Marguerite (Tulk) Leyte.

While attending Memorial University of Newfoundland he joined the University Naval Training Division.  Although he graduated with his Bachelor of Education, he chose not to teach, and instead joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a junior officer.  Harry served the RCN from 1950-1974, serving on numerous ships over the years; a posting in Portsmouth, England for specialized training in communications; HMCS Cornwallis the center for training new recruits where his communications training was put to good use; a posting to Washington, attached to the Canadian Embassy, and his final posting as Base Commander, Gander, NL. from which he retired.  The navy training prepared Harry for his life in business – “If there was a problem, it had to be fixed, no excuses”.

Harry’s business life began with the purchase of the Albatross Motel in Gander, NL, leading to the acquisition and incorporation, over the years, of Sinbad’s Limited, Irving West Limited, and Hotel Gander Limited (now the Quality Inn) as well as The Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook.  His business forays continued with his appointment to the Board of Directors of Eastern Provincial Airways and, years later, appointed VP Traffic and Sales.  In 1978 he became the principal shareholder of EPA.  In 1980 Harry formed Newfoundland Capital Corporation Limited, a holding company, which included Eastern Provincial Airways, Air Maritime and Atlantic Inns Limited.  In 1981 NCC bought Clarke Transport which included trucks, ships, and a ferry service, including a 50% interest in Halterm container operation in Halifax.  A difficult decision was made as a result of rising airline costs, and in 1984 EPA was sold to CP Air.  NCC continued its growth with the purchase of Robinson-Blackmore Printing & Publishing and other printing and publication interests in Nova Scotia and Ontario, along with radio stations in PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador.  In the late nineties, the decision was made to divest of the transportation and printing and publishing sectors, remaining solely as a radio broadcasting company.  NCC continued to grow as a successful broadcasting company, growing to 101 radio stations across Canada, until it’s sale in 2018.

In 1981, Harry made a personal acquisition of 51% becoming controlling shareholder of Universal Helicopters.  In 1987, along with partners Norm Noseworthy and the late Paul Williams, the remaining shares were purchased.  As with any business Harry was involved in, Universal Helicopters Newfoundland Limited eventually grew from an operation of nine helicopters to twenty-one when it was sold in 2013.

Business was Harry Steele’s hobby; he never considered something he loved to be work.  The only other hobby in Harry’s life was fishing in Labrador.  Being on the rivers of Labrador were times well spent with business acquaintances and long-time friends, both old and new.  In Harry’s words, some of his best thinking took place on the riverbanks of Labrador.

He adored his wife Catherine, who was his anchor and often credited her for his success.  He also cherished all the time spent with his family.  He thoroughly enjoyed his road trips across the province where he met so many great friends along the way.  One of his favorite things to do was to talk to people and hear their stories.  He loved getting up early, a good feed of salt fish, watching the evening news, spending time with friends in Florida in the winter, and in recent years, his drives with Terry Hart.

Harry was a valued, highly respected Board member of various Canadian companies:  Fishery Products International, Canadian Airlines International, CHC Helicopter Corporation, Dundee Bancorp Corporation, Southam Inc./Hollinger Canadian Newspapers GP, Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, Major Drilling Group, Canada 3000 Inc., and Inmet Mining Corporation.

He received the Order of Canada, an honor he was delighted to receive; however, it was humbling to Harry as he was, by nature, never one to expect recognition; in fact, he was content to do what he loved, doing business, and making it a success.  He experienced joy and satisfaction in doing what he could for others, without fanfare.

Deservedly, but reluctantly, he accepted tributes:  Honorary Doctorate from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, NS; induction into the Newfoundland & Labrador Business Hall of Fame, and the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame; received the Ernst & Young Atlantic Lifetime Achievement Award; Dalhousie Ocean Sciences building named the Steele Ocean Sciences Building on behalf of the Steele family and, lastly, the Gander Community Centre renamed the Steele Community Centre recognizing Mr. Steele, in particular, and the Steele family’s contributions to the community.

Special thanks are extended to the many people who provided care and friendship over the past five years while resident at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community.  Special thanks as well to Veronica Brown, Harry’s Executive Assistant of 42 years, and good friend and support to the entire family.

Services to honor the life of Harry Steele to be held at a later date.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal or to a charity of your choice.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Steele and her loved ones Rest in Peace Mr. Steele

Dear John,
Extending sincere condolences to you on the passing of your Dad! We know you have fond memories of your Dad and he has certainly left an impact on Gander and it’s people and his name will live on at the Steele Communily Centre, but we will always expect him to drop in while dining at the Albatross!
Thinking of you and the entire family at this sad and difficult time.

We extend across the water from our Island to yours our most sincere condolences to you, Catherine, Peter, Rob, and John, on the passing of Harry. He was a wonderful gentleman and an inspiration to many. It was an honour and pleasure to work with Harry through the radio business and he always seemed to have a soft spot for PEI as the home of his first radio station. We talked often of business, but the conversation always came around to the topic of fishing. We are heartbroken for you and all in the Steele family. Long will Harry be remembered fondly and with admiration.

Hon. Frank and Dorothy Lewis

To all the family of Harry Steele
I have just learned of Harry’s passing and pass on my condolences to you all. I had the occasion to work some with Harry in my job at the New Brunswick Department Transportation. In the late seventies through the years that followed.
An icon is gone, A strong believer in the possibilities out there for Atlantic Canada is gone. A man who contributed greatly to the economic and social growth of Atlantic Canada is gone.
Atlantic Canada is better because Harry Steele passed this way. Know that as it is a fact.
Sincere sympathy.

To the Steele family,
My sincere condolences on your loss. Many wonderful things have been written about Harry, and he deserved every one of them. My memories are many from our times together in NL and NS, and our last visit at Kenny’s Pond. He was always the gentleman, with a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye. His love of Newfoundland was only surpassed by his love of his family. I was honoured to know him and celebrate a life well lived. My deepest sympathies to you all.

To the Steele family,
I’m so sorry for your great loss. Harry was an extraordinary man who will be greatly missed.. Our families go way back to my dad’s and Harry’s naval days. I have fond memories over the years, visiting the family at your Gander home, and then working for NewCap Radio in the late 1980s. I can hear Harry entering the building, “What’s all the news?!” My deepest sympathies to you all, and all who loved him.

Sorry to hear of your loss
RIP Sir

To the Steele family,
May the beautiful memories you all have help comfort you during this difficult time. Our deepest condolences. Thinking of you.

So sorry to hear of Harry’s passing. He was a great man and a good friend.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Steel and your family. He was a kind, intelligent man, who always had a story for us! Mrs Steele, although it has been many years, please knw you are both in my heart.

Condolences to Catherine, Peter, Rob and John. Losing a parent is never easy, keep your memories close. My father, Lester Sturge, was a first cousin to Harry and he was always so proud of Harry and his accomplishments. I remember dad telling us how he walked Harry to his first day of school. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer I remember that Harry told dad that if there was anywhere in the world that they could help her he would have her flown there. I remember when Harry and family came to Musgrave Harbour in the summer and going to play with the boys out in their grandparents garden.

Mrs. Steele, Peter, Rob, John and family, I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Steele’s passing. In a world where most seek comfort in sameness and conformity, there was one who stood out from all the rest, his name was Harry Steele. An exuberant personality with an unrelenting curiosity about anything new, Mr. Steele had an incredible talent for seeing value and beauty in things and in people that many of us miss. . I will remember his unbridled enthusiasm, his arms wide open greetings and zest for life…and what a life it was! He taught Toronto a thing or two about throwing a party when celebrating EPA’s winning of the Halifax Toronto route from CP in the early 80’s. “Now that was an air victory,” read the headline in the Toronto Star.. “The gigantic buffet was laden with Eastern-type delicacies (cod tongues?) The whole thing was so far from the usual sardine and cheese whiz fare that even the boxes that the chocolate-covered cherries were in were made of chocolate.!” And then there was the mention of the “awfully big piece of roast beef they were carving – now the truth can be told – it was really MOOSE!.” Nothing, absolutely nothing Mr. Steele did was half-way or half-heartedly. I am humbled and most grateful to have known the unforgettable Harry Steele during my years as a flight attendant, inflight supervisor and in private life. Sincerely, Deborah LeDrew

Rob and Steele Family,🦋

Please know that I’m sending love from my family to yours.

Peter, sincere condolences to you, Rob, John, your mum and all the family circle. Your dad was a very special gentleman who, although being a very busy businessman, took the time to advise me in my early career in Nova Scotia.
Harry was one of a kind and will surely be missed by many. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

My sincere condolences to the Steele,I did not know Harry personally but I heard a many good stories about the wonderful man he was.I went to school with Peter and my brother Clarence is very good friends with Rob.
Losing a parent is hard but holdfast to the great memories and cherish them all.

Our condolences to Mrs. Steele, Rob, John, Peter and their families.

To Catherine, Peter, Rob and John,

Those of us who had the honour of knowing and working with Mr. Steele, knew just how exceptional he really was. He was a natural leader, a great storyteller, a willing mentor, a hard worker and a caring and compassionate man. He had an unending sense of curiosity, a very keen perspective and a unique style of humour, all of which he could bring to bear in an instant, usually through a clever and very pertinent turn of phrase. Most of all though, Mr. Steele knew the value of people, and how to bring them together in a way that they could accomplish far more than ever they could on their own. I was one of the very fortunate people to experience this. His tremendous life’s energy, unending loyalty to those he knew and loved, and great friendship and character will be sorely missed and often reflected upon. You have our sincere condolences on this very personal and significant loss.

Rob and Family,

Please accept our deepest condolences for Harry’s passing. He has left an incredible legacy and set an exceptional example to every aspiring maritime business person. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

John, Darlene, Eric, your Mom and brothers and all concerned Just sending condolences to you all on the passing of Mr. Steele. I’ve heard my step-father, Ted Abbott speak of him from . time to time. He also was from Musgrave Harbour. I had the privilege of working for Steele Communications at the Carbonear Radio station – then called CHVO. Please accept my sympathy. Thinking of you and will remember you in my prayers.

My sincere condolences to the Steel family. I knew Harry well especially during his tenure as Commanding Officer at CFB Gander. He was a great person and a delight to be with.

John and family, sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Condolences from Mary Lynn and myself. Dave McCormack

So sorry to hear of your dads passing, he was a wonderful man.
Condolences and sympathy to the whole family.

To the Steele family,
So sorry to hear of Mr. Steele’s passing. I last spoke to Mr. Steele some years ago at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s. Always the consummate gentleman, we had a delightful discussion about our growing up in Musgrave Harbour even though we were of different generations. I was privileged to know Mr. Steele and have many fond memories of spending time with Peter in my teenage years.
Myself and Pamela extend our most sincere condolences to you all during this difficult time.

Mrs. Steele, Peter, John, Rob and families. We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Steele! He was always happy to be bringing his friends to the Eagle River for their fishing trips. As soon as he got there he would say “ come on boys, get your hook in the brook”! He didn’t fish much himself, but he was happy for them to fish. Mr. Steele was a generous person who would help you in any way that he could. He certainly will be missed by all of us. He was a good person!

Our deepest condolences to John, Rob, Pete and families. The few occasions that I’ve had the pleasure to meet your father were all so down to earth and genuine. I liken his kind to back when men were defined by their word and who they were as a person. He was a true gentleman and man of the people.

Catherine and family:
John and I were saddened to hear of Harry’s passing and want to pass along our condolences and assure you of our thoughts and prayers especially during these days.. Our late parents were good friends. in Musgrave Harbour.. Harry’s late sister Audrey was also one of my friends to, we lived near by.
When my late sister and I we were in the higher grades Harry often helped us with some .math problems.. Harry was always willing to help. He was a good man and dedicated to excellence.
I think our last visit with you and Harry was when he took us and Myra and her late husband Newman Head out to dinner one summer while we were holidaying in recent years at home in Musgrave Harbour. It was an enjoyable and pleasant evening. We haven’t forgot that evening.
God Bless you and the family.. Love and prayers.
Verna and John

Dear Steele family,
Our condolences on the loss of a special man. We lived across the street from you guys years ago in Gander. I played with John as a kid and had a chat with John a few years ago while staying at the Capital. I ran into Mr. Steele about ten years ago in the fraser mall, he was heading for a hair cut, first time in many years since we seen each other and he remembered me. My mom Ada remembers cooking a salt beef dinner years ago for you all. Both mom and dad worked at the Albatross and mom says he was on of the best bosses ever.

we share in your sorrow and have fond memories of both your mom and dad.

To John and Family, Rob, Pete and your Mom Catherine. It was of Great sadness I heard of your Dads passing on Friday. I know your Father was a Great Man and an even Greater Father . The loss of a parent is very hard and the only thing you can do is cherish all the memories from childhood to adult. You had the chance to spend a lot of time with your Dad both working side by side and spending time at home with his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I firmly believe He is in a good place and I’m sure he will be watching from above till you meet again. Keep him close to your Heart.
Darryl Pike and Family (Lots of fond childhood memories John)

Dear Steele family my full condolences to you all I grew up in Gander with a mom and aunts that worked at EPA and was Base Manager of Universal Helicopters , Goose Bay so I am very familiar with Harry’s fishing travels and as he said some of his best decisions were made on the banks of salmon rivers in Labrador! Rob and John I remember from Gander Colligate days in Gander and so sorry for you guys he was a great, firm but generous, man! He will be missed greatly!

John, Pete and Rob, so sad to hear of the passing of your father. The important metric of any parent can be measured in his children and how they live their lives. Knowing each of you for a long time it is apparent what a GREAT DAD he was. The metric of a person’s life can be easily measured by the friends he makes and how those friends speak of him in his absence. The recollections of your Dad over all these years from people we all know speaks volumes to that. And all of us have had great careers but few that I know speak of their employer, their boss, their colleague in the manner reflected in the other tributes on this site and in the nooks and crannies throughout Atlantic Canada and across the country. Condolences to you guys at this challenging time and Godspeed to your Dad.

It is with great sadness that I heard of Mr. Steeles’ passing. .
I have known the family for many decades, having developed a friendship with oldest son Peter when the family first moved to Gander.. I have had numerous one on one conversations with Rob and John over the years..
My Mom, Nell Mercer, was a part time employee at the Albatross/Sinbads for a number of years , having been hired as a baker, which she did in the confines of her own kitchen. Mr Steele took a liking to my Moms’ Bakeapple Tartes after tasting them some years ago, and offered her employment . She provided a wonderful selection of her baked desserts for the dining rooms at the Albatross and Sinbads’ for about 7 years.
Mr Steele treated her very respectfully, as he was known to do for all who had the good fortune to work for the Steele group of companies.
As many of us have known for years, and as people are now sharing their many examples of the kindness of Mr. Steele, he was a gentleman , businessman , and family man, whose generosity and untold acts of kindness were shared with so many, , in Gander and elsewhere. These acts of humanity were rarely publicized, but will be shared by many over the coming days and weeks.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the entire Steele family.
May your Dad rest in eternal peace.
Jim Mercer/ Nell Mercer

to Catherine,Rob,Pete and John:: please accept our sympathies on your loss and our gratitude for sharing with all Canadians a small part of the joy of life and generosity Harry. brought to our Region and all of Canada. It is one of the blessings of my professional life to have spent some time with Harry.
.I remember well sitting at folding table which the Commission which regulates Canadian broadcasting, had set up in St.John’s meeting room to hear Harry’s objections to a wealthy Toronto broadcaster buying a number of radio stations which served Newfoundland communities .Harry knew his challenge was a “legal long shot” but what mattered most to him was trying to preserve the culture of his home province for his fellow Newfoundlanders. He was,in his testimony-an “emotional witness,” describing the proposed purchase price as a “Piffle”,and the sale a great loss for the listeners, banging the table so hard that it collapsed on our knees.(Joey Smallwood seconded Harry’s views, comparing the proposed sale to the lost of Beothuk culture.)
Joining Harry on EPA flights to “Upper Canada” for business meetings was always an adventure..A Moncton stop did not mean staying on board to go over business.Up Harry would get and head to the airport baggage room, addressing his employees by 1st names he would ask about their kids (also by 1st name) and how they were doing at school.
These are but a few “moments”..His business success was incredible. But ,to me, what made Harry so special was that he achieved all that with so much “heart”.
RIP, Harry and thank you Catherine,Rob,Peter and John.

Sincere condolences to Catherine and family on the passing of Harry. When Harry and you lived in Upper Clements (while he was stationed at HMCSCornwallis) I babysat Peter as a little ~ 2 year old. I have fond memories of your time spent next door. What a wonderful full life Harry enjoyed. RIP.

John and Family, I am so sorry for your loss.. Thinking of you all during this sad time. Harry sure did a lot for Gander!! He was a well liked and respected man!! RIP Mr Steele ..

To the Steele Family.
We have many memories of our time in Gander. When we have a chance to reminisce they come back.
With the news of Commander Steele’s passing we are reminded of kind, smart man. Our father served with Commander Steele in Gander and our mother worked for Mrs. Steele at the Albatross. All our memories are good. Reinforced by the respect and fondness our parents held as they told these stories in later years.
We hope in this time of loss and sadness you are strengthened by your family and your memories.

How do you find the words to describe the impact Harry Steele had on so many people. Like many, I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time throughout the years with Harry and Catherine at their homes in Gander and Halifax. There was never a dull moment when Harry was around and he sure knew had to make business deals happen . Wonderful memories of a great Canadian, who loved his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. One thing for certain Catherine, Peter, Rob, John and their families have Wonderful memories to last them forever. Terry and Diane Hart

To the Steele family; please know we are thinking of you at this time and will fondly remember the friendship and kindness shared with us over the years. Sincere condolences.

Mrs Steele, Pete, Rob, John and family,

My condolences on the loss of Mr Steele. Although we did not know each other well, there was never a time that we spoke that he didn’t address my by name followed by volley of questions about me and my endeavours since the last time we chatted.
I fondly remember the time that I was at Steele Chrysler one Saturday 24+ years ago with my oldest son Bradley (who would have been about 10 years old at the time) .. In drives Mr Steele in a beautiful Red Ferrari 308 GTS . He was dressed sharply and on his way to a wedding . Of course, Brad had only seen cars like this in photos and was quite taken by the machine. At the risk of being late , Mr Steele took great interest in Brad and gave him a complete walk around of the car ending in a spin around Halifax ! Bradley always speaks of the time he went for a joy ride in a Ferrari with Mr Steele and is a certified car crazy guy to this day ! Thank you Mr Steele.

Harry left an indelible mark on our family. I will never forget the gracious hospitality he and Catharine gave me and my family during all of our business travels across the province as well as the business we have done with his radio stations. His legacy will live on in our province for generations to come.

From myself, Garry, Margo, Jerry and all of us Flanker Press, we send our condolences to Catharine, John, Rob, Peter and the rest of theSteele family.

We are so sorry to hear of Harry’s passing.. sending our deepest condolences to Mrs Steele and family.. Harold and Margaret Warr.

To The Steele Family: We were very saddened to hear of Harry’s passing.. We all have childhood memories of Harry coming to our house in Musgrave Harbour to visit Mom and Dad. I think we can best describe him as a very large presence. He and Dad had a great deal of respect for each other, they shared a connection in that they were both military men and of course, they were first cousins. Mom still tells us stories of how Harry was instrumental in getting her a job at the Muddy Shag when it opened in Musgrave Harbour so many years ago. She had to go to Gander for training at the Albatross and Harry and Catharine opened up their home to her. She stayed with them for the duration of her training and was treated like Royalty. That meant so much to all of us. He was best known as an icon in the business world but we choose to remember him as a down to earth man with a very generous heart.. Please accept our most sincere condolences and know that out thoughts and prayers are with you.

Cathy, Pete, Rob,, John and families,
Words cannot fully express the sadness we feel. Harry was such a great friend to our family and a big presence in our lives over the last 40 plus years. We will surely miss him.
Betty Primmer and family

Catherine, Peter, Rob and John
It’s hard to believe that Harry has left. He was a force to be reckoned with, a man to be admired and emulated. I had the privilege to know him in a professional capacity, to work with him and to enjoy his company. He was a kind and caring man and was certainly very supportive of me in a variety of ways throughout my career. I am grateful to have known him. Please accept Susan’s and my condolences on Harry’s passing.

John, Rob, Peter: our sincere condolences on the passing of your dad. Hopefully his many memories will help you through this difficult time. I have many cherished memories of my time associated with Harry.

To Catherine, Pete, Rob and John, my thoughts are with you on Harry’s passing.. You all know what an important part of my life Harry was, both in the good old (sometimes turbulent) airline days and later with Nfld Capital. He was a natural leader who brought out the best in those of us who had the good fortune of crossing paths with him. I owe to him a very fulfilling business career, but more importantly the life lessons I learned from this exceptional man. Ursula and I send our deepest condolences.

To the Steele Family (Catherine; John, Darlene, & family; Rob & Peter & families),
I am saddened to hear about the passing of your loved one. You have lost a husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather, the province has lost a loyal son and many individuals have lost a mentor and friend.
I feel honored to have had the opportunity to know Mr. Steele and to have conversed with him on a number of occasions, about everything from politics to literacy. I always held his opinions in high esteem. In the work that I do I often have opportunities to quote his wise words.
Sincere condolences to his family! So sorry for your loss! Hold on to the wonderful memories!

So many stories and fond memories in fact that a couple of chapters could have been added to Fred Langan’s book ‘The COMMANDER – The Life And Times of Harry Steele’. Please know that as members of your extended military family, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Catherine and family, So sorry to hear of Harry’s passing.. My sincere condolences to all of you at this difficult time..

Catherine (Mrs. Steele), John, Peter, Rob and families,

My first introduction to Harry Steele was nearly 40 years ago when I was the Accountant at the Mount Peyton Hotel. At the time, the Mount Peyton was owned by Harry and his dear friend, Mike Gallagher.. One of my tasks was to track and record his stock market transactions, of which there were many on a daily basis. Hotel accounting took a back seat on many days, but I enjoyed the education.

A few short years later, as General Manager, I’d be summoned mid morning to Clem’s Dining Room (Table 4 in the corner). Mr. Steele had arrived, stopping at the front desk to announce his arrival and summon his sources. My friend Terry Hart from CKCM would arrive promptly along with select others and we would proceed to give the Commander any updates we could on the lay of the land in Central. Harry Steele was unabashed in his articulation of an opinion and his quest for success, but I found him to be a powerful listener as well. In the ensuing years, like many, I learned much as part of his large audience.

Just a few short years ago, I was honored to “share the stage” with Mr. Steele as we both eulogized our special friend, Mike Gallagher. Bonnie and I spent time with Harry and Catherine at their Gander home comparing notes, just prior to Mike’s service. Mike was the epitome of a loyal friend and, for me, the best example of that was Mike’s fierce loyalty to his friend, Harry Steele. That day is a special memory that I cherish, thanks in part to the Steeles.

Thank you to our friend, Terry Hart, as he helped keep Harry alive in recent years when his health was failing. I witnessed Terry, on many days, drop by Kenny’s Pond Retirement Home and take Harry for a drive, surely to discuss the lay of the land somewhere.

Our heart goes out to the Steele family, but especially, the love of Harry’s life Catherine. Mike Gallagher loved to have Catherine play the piano for him. She obliged him at his funeral. I hope she continues to play for Mike and the love of her life, Harry.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Steele.

I can’t tell you just how much it meant to me when on your trip to Australia with the Dobbins he made sure he was in touch to take myself and John out to lunch with all of you.. How many would take the time out of a busy business day to attend a surprise luncheon for a former employee.? Harry that’s who! So a heartfelt thank you Harry for being a part of the fabric of my life.

(Hopefully, if you click on the link you will see a picture of my father, Richard (Mac) McBurney with his good friend, Commander Steele and a memory I have of his impact in my family’s life. )
I always knew him as “Commander Steele” because that’s what my dad always called him.
He was dad’s commanding officer at the Canadian Forces Station Gander from 1967 – 1970. A naval base in landlocked Gander, NF?, you say, casting a skeptical eye. What was the Navy doing there? Well, they were eavesdropping on and gathering military intelligence, though I never knew that at the time, or really, until dad was long retired from his military career.
When dad hung up his uniform in the early 1970’s, Commander Steele, whose incredible entrepreneurial gift had led him into the aviation and hotel industries, hired him to manage the Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook, NF.
Dad worked hard and learned how to manage a hotel from the ground up. It wasn’t easy on him or our family. But it gave him an amazing new lease on life, a new passion, a place where he could belong after being cast adrift from a job he loved.
And along the way, he and Commander Steele became friends, as you can see from this picture, taken at Mom and Dad’s wedding anniversary party, held in 2007 in Charlottetown PE. Commander Steele and, just as importantly, his lovely and gracious wife, Catherine (who valiantly taught me piano lessons when I was a gauche and ungrateful 14-year-old), attended the celebration.
Commander Steele went on to excel in business, to earn the Order of Canada, be inducted into the NF & Labrador and NS Business Halls of Fame and have the Dalhousie University Ocean Sciences Building named after him.
Dad gave his all to Commander Steele while in the military and on civvy street, but I will never forget the loyalty Commander Steele showed to his former Chief Warrant Officer from CFS Gander. And how he became one of Dad’s best friends and came through for him when he needed it most.

John, Rob, Peter, and families,

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Steele’s passing… Our condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with you.

John and family, sorry to hear of your Father’s passing. It’s hard to lose a parent, and I’m sure your memories will be a great comfort. Take care.

Condolence to you all,r.i.p harry.

I have many fond memories of Harry Steele, mostly because of my Fathers friendship with him. My grandfather ( Ches Wellon) and Harrys father worked together in Millertown with the A.N.D. Company . Harry would often visit my Father at our summer home in Aspen Cove. He also had a sister Audrey who operated a general store in Aspen Cove.
I remember during one visit he gave me a business card for the car dealership in Halifax, where he lived at that time. He said, John if you come up to buy a new car we will give you the REAL dealer cost price, not the one they tell you is the cost price. I never took him up on his offer, but still have the card.
His family can be proud of the Legacy he left behind.

Condolence to you all , r.i.p. harry

Mrs. Steele, Pete, Rob, John, and families,

My sincere condolences on the passing of Mr. Steele. As he was for many, he was a great supporter of my career over the years. I learned so much from him – everything from the importance of a well-polished pair of shoes to ensuring that you treat everyone, regardless of station in life, with respect. His advice to me as a young accountant on my first day of employment with him was to learn how to “rise above the numbers”. His advice and example has truly served me well over the years, and I will be forever grateful for his mentorship. Mr. Steele was truly a remarkable man, with a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten.

My deepest condolences to John and the entire Steele family. Harry Steele was truly a great Newfoundlander and Labradorian. As a former Steele Communications employee, Harry Steele always seemed down to earth whenever he dropped by VOCM.. My thoughts are with you all at this time.

Sincere condolences to the Steele family. I fondly remember Mr. Steele’s visits to Robinson-Blackmore and the conversations we would have about mutual friends especially those from the Notre Dame Bay area. He always had time for a chat.

Wayne and Victoria Pennell

Mrs Steele and family
I remember Mr Steele when both of us were stationed in Gander, 1969-1972. My office held the keys to all the doors in the building were we worked. As the Commanding Officer, he had his own work schedule. Many times I would be going home in the afternoon and we would pass each other on a country road. He would flag me down and say, Jim come back and let me into my office.. When I got his Office door open, he would then tell me to go home..
I remember having my picture taken with him when I won a Beard Growing Contest in 1970 at The Base Winter Carnival. My prize was a “Loud” Tie and a bottle of Old Sam Rum. This is just a few personal things that I encountered during my stay in Gander. I found Mr Steele to be a very friendly person and whenever I hear his name mentioned I think of Gander and the good times I had there.
Mr Steele’s Business skills are well known and the family name is a Proud name in The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
May “Harry” Rest in Peace

To: Catherine and Family: Although, I have not met Harry personally, I was aware of his businesses in the Ward and Constituency I represented while serving in politics. “ Let it be known” that he served his community with distinction. “Please accept our deepest sympathy on his passing.”

My deepest condolences on the passing of a great man. I got to know Harry when I started working at the House of Commons right out of university. He often met with the Newfoundland MPs, one of whom I worked for. He was always friendly and funny. I loved his slight cynicism about political life. He invited me to be part of the “opening” of EPA which was a trip on a special plane to Toronto for a big reception. It was great fun and a day I will always remember. I last saw him when I bumped into him at the Glynnmill Inn in 2011 in the restaurant. We has a lovely chat – he was always interested in what people did and supportive. There are not many as real and good as Harry Steele. He will be missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family on the loss of such an extraordinary individual. A model for all.

Wish we had been in one another company more often. My sadness turns to joy for a Man that lived life to the fullest. He will be always

Catherine, John and extended members of the Steele family.
It certainly was a sad moment to hear of Harry’s passing and without a doubt there are countless friends who mourn his death and at the same time relish their good fortune in having counted him as a friend and a mentor. I am one of them.
I like many, will remember him not only for his accomplishments and the great impact he had on family, friends and employees for whom he was a larger-than-life figure.
I remember one time that he once offered me a job and he laughed loudly when I responded by saying, Harry if I wasn’t working for your friend Charlie, you would be my second choice. We reminisced about that each time we meant. His words of wisdom were often powerful and rewarding and a couple of his quotes were , Wayne, ” your success will be in always doing your homework before you commit to something,” and as well,” never forget where you came from.” To this day I repeat them often.
Harry was a pioneer and a leader in many of the things that he started out with and was blessed to have surrounded himself with people that earned his respect.
From humble beginnings he achieved unexpected professional success throughout the business World not only in our Province, the Region or Country but Worldwide.
Harry served his Country, his Companies, his family and employees with Pride and Distinction.
Stand easy Sir and forever RIP.

To Mrs Steele, John, Rob, Pete, and The Steele Family, so sad to hear Mr Steele has passed away.
Mr. Steele’s Leadership over the years with NC.C has been such a positive influence on my career. and Family.

RIP Mr Steele.

John and extended family
Rejoice for a life well lived – Harry was not short changed with the time God gave him as others are. He used the time given wisely and enhanced and improved the lives of many on the road of his life. He never forgot from whence he came and his “ ego “ did not overwhelm or change his good nature
He was a faithful servant – he is now at rest and may that rest be in peace

Dorothy and I were so saddened to hear the news of Harry,’s passing.I had the privilege of working for the Steele family for over 40 years in a financial capacity.During that time I have worked for a lot of great business people but there was only one Harry Steele. He was a man who never forgot who he was and no matter how successful he always treated everybody he met with kindness and respect. He was extremely demanding but always fair.I learned over the years that Harry was respected by everyone he dealt with even the people he may have been competing against. He had an uncanny ability to cut through the chaff in order to make any decision that was required to be made.He was a man who believed nothing was impossible and loved the challenges that came at him everyday of his life..Harr’y’s word was his bond and if he shook your hand the deal was done..Rest in peace Harry you have earned it.

One of the finest gentleman that we have ever met. His generosity without common knowledge is beyond the imagination.. his generosity that he has passed along to his sons. His staff adored him and highly respected him and will never forget him. Rest In Peace . You deserve it and it was an honor knowing you

Topping Harry’s many achievements in the business world, I consider his compassion, generosity and sincerity as his major legacy, especially to all who had the privilege of knowing him. My sincere condolences to Catherine and the entire Steele family. Ray Hawco

Rob, John, Peter, Catherine and extended family members.. My sincerest condolences on your loss. .I worked for Robinson Blackmore for a few years and had immense respect for Harry, both as a businessman and a down to earth genuine gentleman. .I remember during the days of Optipress when I took Harry on at the boardroom table once in Montreal. Everybody was aghast and thought that would be it for me however once the meeting was over and we were in the lobby Harry walked straight up to me , put his hand on my shoulder and smiled and said” That was good….I like you for doing that” I always enjoyed our weekly discussions by phone regarding business. .He was tough yet understanding and above all compassionate.. He was a kind soul who cared about family.. He certainly made his mark on business on the east coast. He was the best! Rest in Peace Harry. You taught me a lot in the short time we spent together.. May God Bless you and your family..

This brings a truly remarkable life to an end.

Mrs. Steele, Peter, Rob, John and families – Arlene and I pass along our sincere condolences. We enjoyed our longtime relationship with Mr. Steele . I always said that when Mr. Steele was in Florida, it seemed like the electricity was removed from the air, but the electricity returned very quickly upon his return to the office. I considered him a mentor and had nothing but the highest of regards and respect for him. Hold on to your fond memories – he will be forever remembered.

A truly decent man. He was always interested in everyone and everything about them, but in a good way. He was down to earth and easy to like. His handshake was his word, and it was firm and honourable. John, Rob, Peter, and Mrs. Steele, thank you for sharing Harry with us. May he rest in peace.
