Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s on Friday, February 12th, 2021, Alice Winifred (Winnie)Thornhill, aged 93 yrs. Predeceased by her loving husband Archie (2013).
Winnie devoted her life to her family and friends but her dedication to her son Scottie was beyond measure. She was a life-long member of the United Church Women’s group and served her church at every opportunity. Along with her family and her faith, children and taking care of others were her passions in life.
She will be greatly missed and remembered by many and leaves to mourn and celebrate her life, her 3 children: Sheldon Thornhill (Thelma), Mt. Pearl; Dorothy Newchurch (Mick), Bay L’Argent; Scottie, Pleasantville Towers; 3 grandchildren: Kimberley Loder (Keith), Qatar; Christina Baker (Brian), Bay L’Argent; Todd Thornhill (Albert), Toronto. 3 great-grandchildren: Alexandra Cowan (James), Garnish; Jacob Loder and Jordan Loder, Qatar; 3 great-great- grandchildren: Liam, Aliyah and Calista; brothers: Chesley (Daisy – deceased), Calvin (Joan), Eric (Elaine) and Neil (June) Williams; as well as sister, Vivian Pope (Bill – deceased).
Also leaving to mourn Dorothy Dutton, roommate (partner in crime) at Karwood Retirement Center.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place on Tuesday April 20th, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel and in keeping with COVID regulations it is by invitation only. Those unable to attend can view the service via livestreaming by following the link above.

My heart is saddened at the loss of such a beautiful soul. When you think of kindness and compassion you have only to think of Winnie to find both. She was an exceptional person who had a kind word and a meal for all who came to her door. This world is less without her. My love to the family. Winnie will be missed by so many and she will always be in my heart. Much love

Winnie was a long-time member of our UCW group and we still miss her singing. There’s hardly a meeting goes by that something or other doesn’t remind me of her. Only a few nights ago I was looking back through some of the UCW records I still have and one book was the Minutes of many meetings recorded in her handwriting when she was our Secretary.. I remember when she moved back to town and we were looking to replace her as Secretary, the lady who did agree to the position made a point of telling us that she could never do as good a job of it as Winnie did.
Rest peacefully, Winnie…we will have you leading our singing again one day!
