Dear Iris and family,

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ches, a great Newfoundlander. Ches has touched the lives of so many throughout our province and across Canada.

His contributions to many communities through business development, partnerships, and employment is immeasurable. Indeed Ches’s dedication and commitment to Newfoundland and Labrador will carry on far into the future. He will be missed by many.

Again, my deepest condolences Iris and to the Penney family.

Yours sincerely,

Yvonne Jones, MP

To the Penney Family. My father John Scott worked for Capital Ready Mix for many years and spoke very highly of Mr. Penney. He often spoke of how good Mr. Penney was to his employees. Dad passed away 7 years ago and even though Dad had been retired for several Years Pennecon sent flowers to the funeral home. A small tribute that still amazes me in a company as large and complex as Mr. Penney’s he took the time and paid tribute to my father. Speaks volumes for him not only as an employee but a human being.. To the entire Penney family, Tamara & Ches personally , our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the entire Penney family. Our deepest sympathy to you on your loss. I will always remember Chess – his generosity, kindness & compassion affected many lives including my own. He gave me my first full-time job when he came to Grand Falls as CIBC Manager, and was later directly responsible in arranging my transfer to St. John’s in June, 1956, shortly after my fiancé had been transferred there. We will be forever grateful to him for that. It was great to see & chat with him again while visiting in Brigus in 2011. We were privileged to watch the entire webcast from our home in Ottawa. May the thoughts & prayers of so many friends sustain & comfort you at this difficult time

Sincerely,

Harris & I were very sorry to hear about Ches. We brought his boat – the “Friday Night” back from Florida. At every marina we stopped along the way, it was always one of the nicest boats & many got a chuckle from the life raft name – the “Saturday Morning”. Harris worked the Labrador coast & in the Canship office for many years. Ches wanted to make a trip with Iris to all the little places Labrador – Harris & I as Capt. & Cook.. His daughter Maggie & I shared a love of gardening & we know the toll of her loss. He was an inspiration to all that knew him – raised in a large family & his success came from his hard work. He loved his family & we send you our sincere sympathy..

Iris and The Penny family … We didn’t know Mr. Penny as a personal friend and only spoke to him on occasions when we would meet in the foyer of The Salvation Army citadel on Adam’s Ave. He always wore a smile and had a kind word. We have been reading all the beautiful expressions of sympathy, many talking about what a special gentleman he was and how he helped many. What a difference he made in so many lives. It must help in this sad time to know how much he was loved and respected. Today Heaven is much richer because of his presence. Knowing so many care and are there for you all must bring you comfort. May you feel God’s presence very real in these days.

Theresa and I are saddened to hear of Ches’s passing. I have the greatest respect for Ches’s business acumen and his humanitarian efforts. I was especially moved to attend the JA dinner where he was honored with the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame recognition. As a member of the Y Building committee I’m not sure the building would have been the financial success it turned out to be without the truly generous Penney family contribution. Over the years, I have dealt with many of the Penney companies and I count many senior executives with the firm as good friends. As a neighbor in both Brigus and Bradenton, we will miss Ches in the neighborhood. Dwell on all the positive memories and his great contribution to the province.

To Glenys, and the rest of the Penney family.. It was a sad day when we the people of NL lost such a humble man who took so many people under his wing. A man who gave so much of himself. I remember their home while visiting. My g parents on Adelaide St. Carbonear. Mr. Penney you will be missed. May your family find condolences in the good you did .RIP

Our sympathies to Iris and families so sorry to hear of the passing of Ches. It was an honour to know such a wonderful man. May you find comfort in the memories in the days ahead.

Wallace and Ruby Snow

Iris, Dan Gail and family
Both Paula and I were saddened and disappointed to learn of Ches passing. We will always remember him for his engaging manner and his always genuine enjoyment in spending time with us. His ability to treat a young banker with respect and as a peer had huge impact for me and fostered a lot in how I acted in my interactions with people.
Our Province has lost a great visionary, a highly capable business leader, and mostly, a wonderful man.
Our thoughts are with you at this time.

Jack and Paula Hillyard

Iris and family,
The legacy created by Ches in the province and beyond is insurmountable. Our province is so fortunate that so many businesses were created through his leadership guided by his unwavering entrepreneurial spirit. To all of you, we are a richer place because of him. It is with your support that we are the benefactors. As you say farewell to your loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather, please know there are many here to support you during this time of sorrow. With the sincerest of sympathies and in loving prayer,

Hon Gerry Byrne and Denise Gibbons

Thanks for all the work .Rest in peace.

To Iris and the Penney family,

We are thinking of all of you during this difficult time. Ches meant a lot to us and we have shared many wonderful times. We will always remember his laugh, his sense of humour and his kindness. The annual trips to Trinity were always filled with stories of the past, political happenings and gossip too! His curious mind always wanted to know what was happening. Ches was one of a kind. We will miss him dearly.

Iris and the Penney family,Please accept our condolences on Ches’s passing. It was an honor to have known such a great person. May the peace that comes from the memories of love shared comfort you now and in the days ahead.

Dear Iris and Family: Deb and I are saddened to hear of Ches’s passing. We are remembering fondly our times of fellowship and food with friends. I especially recall Ches having a concern for our autistic grandson and the way that he provided moments of affirmation to him during a boat ride out to Bell Island. We remember as well Ches’s love for The Salvation Army and what joy it was for us to see you both in the Citadel congregation when we were the Officers there. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers in these tender days of grief and loss; God knows and He cares. I know you will draw on many beautiful memories of your lives together. God bless. Iris and the Penney Family,
We are sorry for your great loss. Che’s was always thoughtful and respectful of those he met.
I believe that his address to the Memorial graduating class of 2005, when he received his well-deserved honorary degree, should be required reading for all high school and university students. It shows his wisdom both in personal and business relationships.
Rest In Peace, Ches! You will be missed!
Sincere condolences to you all,
Don and Barb Butt

Jill, Bob, Diana and Family

Iris and family, our love and prayers surround you at this difficult time. Ches was such a gentle, caring man and we have wonderful memories of our visits in recent years. Sandra felt a special bond with Ches because of his mom and knowing they shared the same great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
God Bless you!

Iris you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time …. Hugs !

Sorry to hear of the loss of your remarkable father. A great loss to family and the entire province and beyond. His reach and influence was extraordinary.

My sincere condolences to Iris and the Penney Family . May the peace of God and the comfort of the Holy Spirit be with you throughout these days. Let the pleasant memories of your time together sustain you. Ches is my second cousin through the Pike line.

There are many great people in this world but few whose lives shone as brightly and as memorably as has Chess’s. In my many business trips to Newfoundland, over nearly half a century, when in St. John’s it was mandatory on my part to call on Chess and if he was in town he always made time for me. I’ve missed those calls to see Chess since retiring in 2003 but the fond memories will always be with me and my sincere condolences to Iris and the family.

Iris and the Penney family,

Our deepest sympathy on Ches’s passing. We had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with both of you during a visit in Florida. He left a lasting impression – our prayers and thoughts are with you and the Penney family during this time.

To Iris and The Penney Family,

Words have never been a problem for me but there is no way I can express the debit of gratitude I owe to Ches and the Penney Family. Since the age of 19, I spent 33 years working for/with Ches and members of the Penney Family. It has afforded me my dream of raising a great family and allowed me to acquire a successful business that has provided me an those I love most a wonderful life. I could have never achieved this without Ches and his amazing take on life and business, and willingness to share it with others so willingly. Despite working in a retail environment all my life there are only a few people I hold as mentors and true role models and Ches is at the top of the list next to my Father. I have lost a Great Mentor, NF has lost Great Patriot and the World has lost a Great Man! Our prayers and thoughts are with Iris and the Penney family. For the majority of my life I have always been able to count on Ches and the Penney’s to be there for me and I want you to know the Brushett Family is there for you now and always…

Iris and Penney Family
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time . I had the pleasure to work with Ches as a municipal politician . Always a man of his word , never wanting the lime-light but willing to shine it on others . He was always humble , dignified and caring. This exemplary man as left his presence in the heart and soul of many grateful people and communities . His life story as many wonderful chapters , truly a narrative about humanity .

To Iris and the family. Be assured that you are being uplifted in love and prayer at this very difficult time. Thank you for allowing us to get to know Chess just a little bit. He was a gentle giant. From our limited interactions with him you could tell that he was a sincere and caring individual. He will be missed by a large numbers people that he has touched over many years. Just remember that God is faithful and he will never leave you. God bless.

We are so sorry about the passing of Mr Penney. We will always remember the times when we had the opportunity and privilege to play for him. He was an inspiration to us as he wept when he heard certain tunes. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to experience this with you. To Iris and the family be assured of our love and prayers during this very difficult time. God bless.

To Iris and the Penney Family,

Despite his best efforts to portray himself as ordinary, his outstanding decency, intelligence, integrity, calm demeanor, infectious smile and sincere modesty caused those who knew him to recognize that he was truly extraordinary.

To Iris and the Penney Family
Ruth and I are thinking of you toady and want to assure you of our prayers and concern for all the family. During my visits with Ches at the hospitals I was most impressed with your care for your husband even though there was lots of health care available from the staff. I remember likening you to a “mother hen” — your care seemed to be constant. Blessings on you,, all the members of the Penney family and the Petten family.

Our sincere condolances to the family of a very remarkable man. Mr Penney – Ches, was a major contributor in the lives of our family. He saw a hard worker with determination and he gave him a chance; a chance to improve his own family situation while proving dedication and loyalty with hard work and respect. Ches Penney – a man who soared – but never left others behind. A man who earned the respect of all who worked for him. A man who has helped without the realization of all the good he has done for others. Goodbye Ches, it has been an honour! Dennis Baker (Brenda & family)

It is with profound sadness that I learn of Ches’s passing.

I had a soft spot for Ches even before I met him because they all spoke of him with fondness and respect. My path crossed with Ches’s at family get togethers and I always found Ches to be a true “Gentle Man”. Interested in what you were doing, asking about family, talking about world events.
