Passed peacefully away at Chancellor Park, St. John’s on December 16, 2016, Alice Wareham, aged 97 years. Predeceased by her husband, Pilot Officer (RCAF) Baxter Wareham; parents John and Bertha (Spencer); and brother Earnest. Leaving to mourn relatives of Taylor family, Spencer family, Bishop family, Knight family, Wareham family and a large number of friends.
She taught school in Exploits and Harbour Buffett. Alice was vice principal of St. Michael’s School and Bishops College in St. John’s, Principal of Bishops College; Lecturer, Assistant Associate professor of English at Memorial University.
She received many awards throughout her career including – University Women’s Scholarship at MUN, Governor General Medal at MUN, Confederation Medal (Government of Canada), Honorary Doctorate at MUN.
She contributed greatly to education, being a member of several Professional organizations. Her extracurricular activities and interests included volunteer worker with the Cancer Society, driver for Meals on Wheels of VON, active and loyal member of the Anglican Church and served on several committees at the Parish and Diocesan level.
The family would like to send a thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of Chancellor Park for their loving compassion and care shown towards Alice during her long stay there. Also, we would like to express a thank you to Carnell’s Funeral Home, especially Peter and Michelle, for their understanding, kindheartedness and professionalism over the past few days.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday December 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Requiem will take place at St. Michaels and All Angels Parish on Wednesday December 21 at 2:00 p.m. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Morton’s Harbour. No flowers by request. Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to St. Michaels and all Angels Parish, Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Society or a Charity of one’s Choice.
