Lorna and Stephen,
I was very sad to hear the news that Mel had moved on. No matter how long the suffering, the letting go is never easy. I thought of Mel as a merry soul. His voice stands out in my mind as does his constant warmth and gladness to see us. I wish you strength to go step by step forward, and to feel him with you on the way. Take Care. ✨

Hi Lorna. Sorry to hear about Mel.

Lorna
I know this is a little late but we just read about Mel’s passing. We remember him from the Miller Center a few years ago when he shared a room with dad (Mr. Guiney).

Saddened to hear of Melv’s passing. We were next door neighbours on Medcalf Street in Gander for the 50’s and 60’s. Now and again I would see him around St. John’s in later years and he would always be smiling when he greeted you; and was probably the best road hockey goalie on the planet when we were boys. My sincere condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. We had many chats and laughs over the years. Mel always kept us here at the CNA aviation school in Gander in the know of what was happening in the aviation industry in this region. Always a true gentleman and an all around great person. He will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. My deepest condolences to the family. RIP old pal.

Sincere condolences to Mel’s family. We grew up under the street light on Metcalf Street playing hockey til all hours of the night. Like Brian said, Mel was wicked in net – had such reach and those long legs made him nearly impossible to beat. And the grin he’d give you when he stole a sure goal from you at a key point in the game. Years later I ran into him a few times and he always had a smile and time for a chat. He was one of the best! RIP old friend….

So sorry to hear of Mel’s passing, Lorna and Stephen! Our sincere condolences to you and all your family!

Condolences to Lorna and Stephen. Saddened to hear of Mel’s passing. Knew Mel from our Gander days and later on into St. John’s. One of the most genuine and likeable fellows anyone could ever meet.

We could use a lot more like Mel in the world, but he was one of a kind. Oh the times we shared, and the stories that could be told, of sailing throughout the Arctic on the CCGS Sir John Franklin. In the Midnight Sun our Officer’s Mess was THE place to be when Mel was onboard. My sympathies, Lorna & Stephen.

Deepest condolences to all of Mel’s family at this very sad time. I have a picture hanging in my rec room of a helicopter on an ice berg that Mel took many years ago. Rip Mel.

Met Melvin through Camera 35 Club many years ago and with that big smile upon entering the room; everyone knew Mel had arrived. My career with Forestry and Wildlife and travel by helicopter and fixed wing; meant numerous stories exchanged about such travel. Mel’s fabulous photo of the helicopter on the iceberg still lives in my memory. Rest easy my friend and God Bless.

It was a pleasure to sail with Mel on the icebreaker CCGS Sir John Franklin.

His photos were wonderful !

It is so unfortunate that we are currently dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Otherwise, his family would see how many people liked Mel by the vast number who would have attended his funeral. Maybe there will be a Celebration of Life get-together after the pandemic is over.

Condolences to the family – I had the privilege of meeting Mel when the Coast Guard guys stayed at my bed/breakfast and cottages in Lumsden . A wonderful guy indeed . One of his pictures is hanging there now . R.I.P.

I will always remember Mel as a rock solid person, energetic and willing to put 110% towards our tasks or improve crew morale.. I always enjoyed his company and am so sorry to hear of his passing. My deepest sympathy & condolences to Mel’s family

Lorna and Stephen,

So sad to hear of Mel’s passing. A fine gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.

I met Mel on his first voyage to the Arctic on CCGS Sir John Franklin (CCGS Franklin at the time). I soon realized that Mel loved taking pictures and telling jokes. It didn’t take long for Mel to become one of the Franklin’s crew and not just a helicopter engineer on a six week assignment.
Rest well Mel.

To the family of Melvin our sincere condolences on his passing . We were childhood neighbours kitty corner across back fences in Gander , Melvin lived on Metcalf and I on Sullivan . Lots of outdoor hockey on Mel’s backyard ring . I left Gander in 1966 and didn’t know Mel in his adult years but Mel always offered his condolences to our many departed childhood friends . I knew Mel and Stephen through the hobby of radio control flying.I would enjoy when meeting them at the flying field and seeing his smiling face along with a story or two that were always amusing.. He was also the delegated cook when we would have a bbq at the field on occasion. There were never any complaints about the cook…

I visited Mel in hospital just over 3 weeks ago. Despite his weakened condition he still had a memory or two and a laugh to share with me. Always positive never stuck for a joke rest in peace my friend.

There are very few in the aviation industry in Newfoundland and Labrador that did not know or heard of Mel Crewe. To me Mel was an inspiration, his positive attitude and his strength to carry on with the things he loved to do in spite of what he had to endure, proved to me that there is nothing we can’t endure if we follow his example. Jim and Jill Osmond

I first met Mel when I worked in the Sales and Catering Department at Delta St John’s and he was part of the team planning the Atlantic Regional Aircraft Maintenance Conference.

One encounter with Mel that stands out for me happened many years ago when my family and I happened to run in to him in Lumsden. He was working with the Coast Guard at the time and we were there on a mini staycation. I remember mentioning I didn’t recognize him right away because (first) I didn’t expect to see him in Lumsden and (second) his hair was curlier than what I remembered. Not missing a beat, he asked me if I liked his hair and commented that his wife called him her « lamb ». Then, he let me know that it was different because of cancer treatments he’d had.

The day my family and I saw him in Lumsden, I could see that he’d had a long, full work day but he was gracious, patient and kind and offered our daughters the chance to see the CCG helicopter up close and then sit in it. They thought it was really cool!

I was sad to hear this news. My heartfelt condolences go to Mel’s family, friends and colleagues.

Dear Lorna and Stephen,
