Obituary

Died with dignity and great courage after a nineteen year battle with lymphatic cancer. Pre-deceased by parents Alphonsus and Josephine Penney, brother Gordon, sister Shirley, sister-in-law Betty Penney, brother-in-law Paul McCormick and nephew Gary Penney.

Leaving to mourn children Joanne (Brian Sears), Mark (Sandra), David (Karen Ronald), Carolyn (Glen Noseworthy) and Craig (Lisa) and grandchildren Isobel Dobbin-Sears; Megan, Maria and Michael Dobbin; Gillian and Heather Dobbin; Kelly, Christine and Tim Rose, and Jane, Sally, and Elli-Jo Holloway; Zac and Jake Dobbin; and a brand new great-grandchild Oliver. Also left to mourn are brothers Don and George Penney, sister Moira McCormick, and sister-in law Susie Cheeseman, and Aunt Marion Manning. She also left numerous friends and extended family who enriched her life.

Eleanor, or Penney as she was often called, was a remarkable lady, mother, and friend, who we turned to often for her advice and wisdom. She will be greatly missed, and we will remember her as someone who did it her way.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of one’s choice. A Celebration of life will be held at Clovelly Country Club in December 29 from 11:AM – 2:00PM.

So sorry for your loss
She was a kindhearted, independent
spirit who did not discriminate against hoodlum or hooligan. I will always remember her warm hospitality
and insistent optimism.
You are all in our thoughts at this unfortunate time.

Joanne, Carolyn, Mark, David, Craig & families & Moira.
Although I only knew Mrs. Dobbin for a short period of time, I enjoyed every minute I spent with her. I looked forward to our chats, the black & white films we watched & the stories she shared with me. A true fighter she was…she was proud of every lap she made around the island.
To me she was the perfect example of a beautiful woman with so much love & pride for all her family.
Moira she loved your visits & looked forward to them.
Rest Easy Gentle Woman you have a special place in my heart.
Love Jackie

I only saw Mrs Dobbin on one day in my life. 1972. Craig’s chauffeur brought me to her home in Ottawa. I was a University student from Bell Island. Think it through. A MUN student from Bell Island being whisked around Ottawa in a Mercedes Benz limousine. The chauffeur, in full uniform, brought me to the kitchen in a home like I had never been inside before and there was what appeared to be a maid in uniform standing on one side and another lady scrubbing the floor. The lady scrubbing the floor got up and gave me a warm smile and took off her rubber glove and said “How nice to meet you, I’m Penny”. I think she might have told me she was from Grand Bank but that is murky. Later that evening I was brought back to the home again for a small party. The lady “scrubbing” had morphed into a glamorous hostess. The only thing recognizable? The same glowing smile. Every so often she would gently ease away for this or that and stop at a corner. I asked the chauffeur what “the corner thing” was all about. He said there was an intercom system. He supposed she was checking on her sleeping children. Just two brief meetings? Etched out a delightful memory of what appeared to be an incredibly warm and focused wife and mother. My deepest sympathy to her much loved and cared for children.

So sorry to hear about your mother….may she Rest In Peace …..Ingrid Coultas

Sorry for your loss Joanne ……..may she Rest In Peace. ????????

Our deepest sympathies.

Deepest sympathy to her family at this difficult time. Your mother was kind, strong, funny and was a wonderful friend to my mother, Mary Neary. The last outing my mother had was to her place for lunch, a day she thoroughly enjoyed. I know how much she loved her family, somewhere in heaven I imagine a class of nurses enjoying a good laugh.

I was saddened to learn of Penney’s passing. She was such a lovely person. May she rest in peace. My thoughts are with you all at this time.

I have known Penney for many years and loved her warmth, sense of humour and determination. I met her through my sister-in-law, the late Greta Lush. It was a lively time when they visited with us in Nova Scotia. I spoke to Penney via phone about a week ago and she sounded great, so happy to have had that moment. Sincere sympathy to her family, she always remarked on how lucky she was to have all of you. God Bless!
