Paul E. Gaudet

Obituary

It is with great sadness and heart-breaking sorrow that the family of Paul Edward Gaudet announce his passing on February 9th, 2019 in the warmth of his home “Dunbrody” and loving arms of his family.

Paul was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, the second eldest and oldest boy to Gerry and Imelda into what grew into a beautiful and caring family of eight children. Both his parents were incredibly loving, devoted and proud of all their children.  His Mom a registered nurse, provided the nurturing, love, “gentle” guidance and discipline needed to raise such a large family.  As an engineer and architect, his Dad was his hero and mentor.

Education was paramount in the Gaudet household and at the age of 14, Paul left Moncton and attended high school in Rigaud, Québec and Cégep at Petit Séminaire in Québec City. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from University of New Brunswick followed by a MBA from the Université de Moncton.  Paul started his career with Moneco Engineering as a site engineer on the construction of Norsk Hydro’s Magnesium Plant in Becancour, Quebec.  That was where he crossed paths with Moya and his fate was set. Paul married Moya in 1990 and lured by the opportunities of Newfoundland’s burgeoning oil and gas sector, moved to St. John’s. There Paul worked with BFL on the construction of the Hibernia Platform in Bull Arm and went on to support subsequent offshore projects through Magna Services. In 2005, after a short (and cold) stint in Labrador, Moya convinced Paul to join forces with her and nurture the seeds that she had planted with Pan Maritime Energy Services in the LNG sector in Doha, Qatar.  Paul did more than simply nurture, what was only intended to be six-month stint became 12-years providing many an adventure for the whole family.  Qatar became the family’s second home, where Paul befriended many expats and Qataris alike. He had a dedicated and loyal staff in Doha and the folks that joined his team became a part of his family.  Paul was dedicated and committed, and his judgement was guided by his strong morals of fairness, honesty and respect. He had a circle of close mates from the Doha Golf club and connected with other very special folks from his many miles of cycling.  He felt particularly honored with the brotherly bond he shared with his Qatar friends, in particular Sheikh Abdulla and Bader. They enjoyed many a cigar and soufflé under the beautiful skies of a Doha evening.

Home was and will always be where Paul’s heart lies.  He had an incredible group of friends with whom he shared his passion for cooking, cycling, skiing, golfing and most importantly, the fine wines from his cellar. In particular his “beau-frère” Pierre Gauvreau with whom he shared an occasional fondness for a wee dram of single malt scotch, family friend Mike Madden, a cherished addition in all adventures and celebration and his childhood friend, Dr. Rod Martin who was by his side supporting him throughout his illness with his love, hugs and guidance.

Paul was never far from his best friend and dear wife Moya with whom he shared many passions especially a shared love of adventures on the family boat the “Moya C”, skiing Marble Mountain and cycling hills from Cape Spear to the Prophet Job’s tomb in Salalah, Oman.  His daughters Marah and Mia, who along with Moya were his everything.  Like his Dad, he was a devoted and loving father wanting nothing more for his daughters than to find meaning and happiness in life. He cared deeply for his Mom and Dad and was a big brother and friend to all his brothers and sisters.

Paul leaves treasured memories to his wife Moya Cahill, his precious daughters Marah and Mia, his mother Imelda of Moncton, siblings Clare (Mitchell) of Toronto, Marcia (Patrice) of Kingston Jamaica, Charles (Debbie) of Moncton, Maura (Gerard) of Moncton,  Anne (Darren) of Saint John, Marc (Jamie) of Halifax, Julien (Jill) of Moncton, his brother in-law Fred (Doreen) of St. John’s, sister in-law Nora (Pierre) and many nieces, nephews and friends whom he cared for deeply.

Paul is predeceased by his dear father Gerald J. Gaudet, and parents in-law Nora and Gerard Cahill of whom he loved deeply.

Many thanks to the dedicated and compassionate staff of 4NorthA, Doctors Engelbrecht, Holmes, Armstrong, Craig, Greenland, Downton, Parsons, Rorke, Fardy, Dalton, the staff of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, family doctor Dan Malone, and the team from Community Heath.  As well we commend Dr. Jacques and his team at the Clinique Neuro-Outaouais in Gatineau for their ongoing work in immunotherapy for GBMs and thank them for the opportunity to be a part of the research. Heartfelt thanks to Anne and Bob of Caregivers for providing such incredible nursing support over Paul’s last few weeks. Connie, Lisa, Trevor and Debbie enabled us to provide the comfort and care for Paul to remain in the comfort of his home embraced by the love of his family.

A Celebration of Paul’s life will be held at Carnell’s Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road at 3pm on Thursday February 14, 2019. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral home on Tuesday, February 12th   7 – 9pm, Wednesday, February 13th, 2- 4pm and 7 – 9pm.  Flowers are welcomed and donations can be made in Paul’s memory to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research.

He will be remembered by all of us for his kindness, generosity, integrity, love of family, his incredible prime rib and unparalleled wine cellar.

Dear Moya, Marah, Mia and family

When the message reached me of Paul’s demise, I was shocked, angry and sad.

I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to you all and your nearest.

When we last spoke in June last year it was clear that Paul’s health was not going to improve. But how unjust is it that Paul has been taken away from you and the girls so soon.

I really wished and prayed that Paul could have been in your midst for a much longer time. Really words are falling short. Paul was a great, honest and friendly guy and will always be remembered.

I wish you and the girls all strength and love to cope with the loss of Paul.

Dear Moya and family, I was so saddened to hear of Paul’s illness and and recent passing. I feel very fortunate to have gotten to know both you and Paul through our mutual connections and our love of skiing. We shared some great laughs and memories during those times and although our association was brief it was very easy to see how much you meant to each other and how strong you were as a family. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this most difficult time

Hi, my dear old friend, this note is being sent to you with a very long hug & heavy heart.

I am finding it difficult to put words to paper to express my thoughts to you.

I’m sincerely saddened in my heart to learn of Paul’s passing. As you know he was instrumental in my 1st expat assignment in Qatar, we lived together for some time, golfed & shared many a fine cigar & a scattered bottle of wine. Ok, we shared many a bottle of wine just about every night after work & discussed the world, business, life & everything about it & many a good chuckle.

I was fond of him as a colleague & as a buddy as he had a cool demeanor about him & we could talk about anything which gave me comfort.

I know your hurting right now but I reckon he is in a better place far from suffering. There is solace to be gained from that.

Try your best to focus on all the beautiful memories you have both created together and that you will always have of him, your two treasured daughters & your love eternal.

My sincere condolences to you & the girls during this difficult time. I will be thinking of you over the next while & until we see each other again hopefully this summer at Long Pond, please look after yourself.

Love,

John

Moya,

I met Paul through our mutual participation in the Dimplehead Invitational in Orlando. We bonded on the golf course through shared conversations about growing up in New Brunswick. We connected on one particular hole in which after I sunk a birdie putt he too sank a great putt to halve the hole. He clearly had a wonderful competitive spirit. I’ve learned much more about him since through mutual friends and wish I could have had the pleasure of spending more time on the golf course with him. He was in our thoughts and hearts just a few weeks ago at DHI2019. He was a remarkable man and will be deeply missed.

Sincerely
Hazen Gandy

Ms. Moya, Cahill and Gaudet families,

It took days for me to muster courage to finally put into writing my condolence knowing myself as very emotional.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Paul’s passing especially my last memory of him was his last year’s visit to office where he was his usual strong and vibrant self.

I owe Paul my career now, as well as the skills I have acquired after having worked closely with him as his Project Assistant for 6 years in Pan Maritime Energy Services. I will always remember him as a man of fairness, generosity (he gave me a company car as a token of my long and dedicated service to him!) and compassion to his workers and his family. I would always remember his handshakes as tight and re-assuring.

Paul lived albeit short but a very meaningful journey as he is leaving behind a very compassionate, full of life, respectful, indefatigable and family-oriented wife in Moya, whom I have known in her multiple visits to Doha.

Moya, Marah and Mia I am sending my sincerest condolences. I am uttering my prayers that God grant you fortitude in these times.

Hugs to you all,
Joey Angeles

It took a few minutes for email to sink in. Absolutely shocked to hear of Paul’s passing away in such a short space of time.

Please pass my condolences and thoughts to Moya and the family at this sudden tragic loss to them all.

Paul was such a nice friendly easy going person to get along with, may he rest in peace.

Moya, Marah & Mia,

Hello Moya.

Moya;

I am very saddened by this news. I very much enjoyed my time working with Paul & we did keep in touch over the years since he finished up in NS.

I regret that I did realize he was ill and did not connect with him more recently as it has probably been about 3 years since we’ve spoken.

He was a great guy, and a real gentleman who enjoyed life. I recall one time a subcontractor gave us passes to a very nice, and at that time, new golf course. Not being a very accomplished golfer, I set Paul up with my brother Keith in my place for them to go enjoy the course. Keith is an accomplished athlete & avid golfer & was very impressed with Paul’s game. (Sibling rivalry made me feel very pleased that Paul kicked his a*s!)

I will also always fondly remember the time Maurice & I had dinner at your &Paul’s home.

It is very shocking that he is gone prematurely in life.

My sincere condolences to you and your family for your loss.

-Karen

Accept my apology for not coming to the wake as I remain in RoK at this time.

Moya and family,

I was truly saddened to learn of Paul’s passing. Paul was one of the greatest men I ever had the privilege to know and work with. I learned a lot from Paul during our time together in Labrador… things that will stay with me the rest of my life. He was truly a gentleman and I don’t think anyone ever showed me the level of respect that he did. He really helped shape my approach for treating others early in my career. I will always be thankful for that. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May your memories help ease your broken hearts at this time and in the future.

Dearest Moya, Marah, Mia and Family,

It is rare in this life to meet anybody of the calibre of human as Paul. His integrity, generosity, kindness, humour and fairness were exemplary and it was an honour to work by his side.

I was witness to how he could not wait to leave Qatar, to return home to you all and after being so lovingly welcomed into your family life and beautiful home, I know exactly how he felt and completely understood his reasons. The love you shared as a family touched every single person you met, both as a family and as individuals – this I believe is a part of Paul’s legacy to you all and to all of us; love goes beyond space, beyond time and beyond the passing of the mere body – I hope this love comes back to you in bounds, at what I can only imagine must be a heartbreaking time.

I have never known a couple who squeezed so much out of life as the two of you and I hope all the memories you made together will protect you with a blanket of smiles when sadness hovers close.

I am sorry I am not able to celebrate his life with you in person on the 14th but I shall be searching for the best red I can find, in order to raise a few glasses in his honour.

I love you all very much and I hope to share hugs, laughter, smiles and of course shopping with you again soon. Paul could never handle seeing me cry, so I’ll stop sniffling now…

Such sad, sad news though I am confident his legacy will live on. Paul’s kindness, compassion, honesty, principles and values simply made me want to be a better person. From the first time I met with him at the Golf Club thinking who is this bigshot with his fancy cigar and grumpy demeanor, never have I been so wrong with respect to first impressions. A true gentleman I have only the fondest of memories. Our love to you and the girls Moya, ill be certain to raise a glass in his honor this evening x
