This is such sad news. I had the very good honour to spend some time in Jim’s company. We met many times, up in his workshop, and he was always great company. My father Nelson considered him a very good friend. God rest them both. Condolences and thoughts for the family.

We are very sorry for your loss. Words are not enough sometimes to comfort your feelings but be assured that Jim will always be in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

Sarah and family

So sorry to hear of your brothers passing. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Mrs. Steinhauer, Sarah, Kelly, Fred, David and family. Please accept my very deepest condolences and most profound heartfelt sympathy. Hearing the news about Jim was heartbreakingly sad. Please know that you all are in my heart.

Jim was my friend, most often he felt like a brother. He had a gentle kindness that is a rare and amazing trait in any person. He cared about people. If he saw someone who needed help or if he saw a seniors driveway was blocked with snow after a big storm, he would often just stop and say Paul I think we need to clear that driveway, a minute or two later, a few passes with the blade and you would see their smiling face.

He loved his brothers, Fred and David and his sisters Sarah and Kelly, he spoke of them often, always proud about all their achievements and accolades. In exactly the same context he cared about his nieces and nephews and when he spoke of them, he was beaming with pride. His life was his family. His devotion to his family is a beautiful testament of how people should be.

When Jim taught me how to sand floors, he would say, ‘a floor is just a table you walk on, just a little bigger’. We did many floors. He taught me so many things, but knowing how to sand a floor, well, I always say I learned how from Jim Steinhauer, from St. John’s Newfoundland, he is one of the best. His pride of craftsmanship was as good as it gets. He was methodical, measured, precise and confident. Jimmy was more, so much more than a ‘Jack of so many trades’. Master Cabinetmaker, French Polisher, Millwright, Marine Engineer, Turbine Engineer, he was an accomplished Scuba Diver, Sailor, to name a few. He was gifted in those skills and whatever he did, he had to do it the right way.

He understood how things were made. In fact, very often he would reverse engineer something to make it for a client and they would just shake their head and say, ‘my oh my, I never thought you could do that’. He would smile and say thank you it was fun working on that. He said that a lot. He loved a laugh, and laugh we did. He always found a way to also show off his great hair, his mane as he called it, he would say nothing, just run his hands through a few times and he would smile, and we would laugh even more, he was cheeky like that.

Jim was an excellent cook and so many wonderful times and meals we were blessed with. He took pride in the kitchen, he knew how to carve and butcher, a great skill, he always explained about the knifes and how to properly sharpen them. He learned and mastered the family recipe of Ginger Bread and Foamy Sauce and if you had the joy of savouring that dish you know that was pure epicurean pleasure on another scale. We shared lots of those times, and I shall miss them greatly.

Anything old Jim saw value in it. He was a historian and knew Newfoundland history as well as anyone. He did great work on the restoration of the WW2 submarine Periscope at the Crow’s Nest Officers Club. I remember that Sunday so well, the big crane on Water Street, that was indeed a great source of pride, it was for me a great honour to be asked by Jim and his dear friend Mr. Nelson Shirren to help.

When I spoke with him just a last month, he had so many projects he had his hands on. I was looking so forward to seeing his new workshop and all the various projects he was working on. One of the reasons why I did, is because I know that in a matter of a few minutes of walking through the door he would tuck into something, and I would be co-opted in, and that was great, because it would be another chance to learn. Jim was a great teacher. So many times, over the last 37 plus years if I were doing a project or working on something, I would ask myself, ‘ how would Jim do it’. That was how it was to be his friend, he had that effect on you, and that is about as good as it gets.

James may peace be upon your kind soul, rest well and rest easy.

With all my love,
Paul

Condolences

Aunt Mildred, cousins Sarah, Kelly, Fred, David, and your families:
My and my husband Ralph’s sincere condolences on Jim’s passing. A surprise, as would be expected at his age, he would have had many more years to go. He and I were good childhood friends and while I may have only known him as the boy, judging from the other condolences here, he seemed to have grown into quite the man. I will miss him and remember him with affection.

Condolences to the family.
Sincerely Linda Giannou
