Obituary

It is with broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Anderson (Andy) Frederick Abbott, our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather in the presence of family, aged 84 years.

Predeceased by his devoted wife of 66 years, Shirley (Fisher); parents Phoebe (Chaulk) and Frederick Abbott; sisters and brothers-in-laws Margaret Barrett (Robert), Maisie Hobbs (George), Myra Cox (Wilson), William (Willie) Fisher and Joseph (Josie) Fisher (Sophie). Celebrating a lifetime of memories are children Glenn, Marilyn (Randy) Folkes, Dean (Sherry), Darren (Kathy), and Dana (Gerard) Collins; grandchildren Kent (Stephanie), Mark (Chris), Cassandra (Chris), Carissa (Sam), Chelsea, Hayley, and Noah; great-grandchildren Georgia and Harrison; brother Warren (Marion), sister-in-law Sophie (Josie); nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

The grandchildren grieve the loss of their grandfather who taught them valuable life lessons. He was happy to hear about all his grandchildren’s ongoing activities and proud of their accomplishments. Dad thoroughly appreciated visits with great-grandchildren and other young people.

Shirley and Andy started their lives together in Bonavista. They moved to St. John’s to support Andy’s studies to become a Master Plumber. Life focused on work and financially supporting their five children whose births spanned over 15 years.  Andy worked with a local plumbing company for 25+ years before forming his own business, Abbott’s Plumbing and Heating, and later, finishing his career retiring from the City of St. John’s.

All the children were taught the importance of education, encouraged to participate in music, sports and outdoor life, and to do your best. As Dad aged, he especially enjoyed listening to rehearsals at his home before the Kiwanis Music Festival in February.

Dad loved nature and outdoor activities (gardening, hunting, fishing, berry picking, etc.)  and visiting Bonavista. Dad preferred gardening plants producing food but appreciated Mom tending to the flowers. He enjoyed listening to local news programs and music on his “trusted” radio. Dad was proud of his father being a WWI Veteran and encouraged support for military veterans making sure we wore our poppies every November.

Gratitude is extended to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for care and support during the last weeks of his life, especially the 7 East medical staff. His prayers were answered to be reunited in heaven with our beautiful mom.

Thanks to Bishops Gardens Seniors Living for providing care to Mom and Dad.

In remembrance, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund or Gower Street United Church are appreciated.

I was a neighbour on Fox Avenue and would stop and have a chat during my walks when Anderson was in the garage. We’d always have a laugh, he was witty man a gentleman. Sorry for your loss.

Marilyn and family… I am sorry for you to see them both go so soon. It must hurt badly. Take some solace in that they are now together which I feel is what they would want. God bless
