Obituary

Austin Ryan, a beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife on July 13th, at the age of 77.  Austin was a barber by trade, a successful businessman.  Boating was his lifetime obsession, and he spent many happy hours on the water with his beloved first mate and wife Sandi, and daughter Niki. It’s been said he owned a boat before he owned a car.

He grew up on Suez St. and attended St. Bon’s, after school he would often go to his father’s barber shop at Rawlins Cross where he learned the tools of the trade.  After his father retired Austin took over the business in 1972 and called it Mr. Austin’s.  Austin was a natural storyteller with the gift of gab, generations have had their haircut at The Shop as it was often referred.  During the same time, he even tried his hand in politics and ran for the Liberal seat in St. John’s East.

He loved to travel and explore new places from small bays and coves in his beloved Newfoundland, to white sandy beaches in the Caribbean, Europe and beyond.  He even owned Four Seasons Travel. Always up for an adventure, Austin with wife Sandi and daughter Niki, moved to Texas for a time, with Sandi working as a Nurse, Austin opened another barber shop in Corpus Christi.

Austin had a way to make you feel like you where the most important person in the room. The Shop remained a source of pride for Austin throughout his entire career and life, he had a natural ability to connect with people, and considered many of his customers friends.

Predeceased by parents Alice and Hilary Ryan, mother and father in-law Rev Wesley and Myrtle Oake, brother-in-law Terry Oake, son in law Chris Abbott (Abbo), sisters Barbra and Maureen (Jim Wiest), and nephew Craig Tilley.

Lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Sandra (nee Oake), daughter Nikki (Chris ABBO Abbott), sisters Patricia (Harold), Maye, Dorothy (Stevie) Ryan, sister-in-law Sherry, brother in-law Dana, nieces and nephews Barbie (Brendan), Michele (Boyce), Michael (Michelle), Shannon (Jennifer), Corey (Sumin), great nieces and nephews Cassie Wiest Hoy and Curtis Wiest, Korey and Kamryn Wiest, Shaye and Ryan Tilley, Jinju and Huera Lynch, Evan Strange, and great great niece Adelaide. we are so sorry to hear about Austin’s passing. We have found Memories of him here at our hardware store. I’m sure he will be very much missed.

Sandra and Family:
Since seeing your husband’s obituary in the Telegram I have thought about you and have been remembering the days of our youth growing up in the Glenwood / Appleton area in the 50’s and early 60’s.. While our paths have not crossed since then vivid memories of our school days still remain. Sincere condolences to you on your loss.

I was sorry to hear of Austin’s passing. I was a Mr. Austin’s customer since the mid-1970s and it was a treat to get a haircut from him. He always was friendly and outgoing and filled with opinions on the issues of the day. I always left the shop with a smile on my face.
My condolences to the family.

My father would take me to Tony’s Barber Shop in the Esso Building on Elizabeth Avenue and Austin would cut my hair while Tony cuts my fathers. Never a word to be gotten in edge wise.
As I ran into him through the years, Austin was always the friendliest and most positive guy and I enjoyed his company. Sincere condolences to the Ryan family.

Austin gave me my first “barber shop” shave while still an apprentice at his father’s shop. I think it was his first effort as well. In spite of Tony’s unending interruptions and micromanagement both Austin and I came out unscathed and we remained friends through the years.

He was a nice man and will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Peace and Blessings be upon Austin. I knew Austin since I was a child, and his father cut my hair. His dad always told me that his ideal job was to be the lighthouse keeper in Buchans. He was a very funny man as was his terrific son, Austin. We had a lot of good times in class as Austin and Tony Kelly kept us all on the edge of our seats with their antics. Austin was always a kind and welcoming guy, always glad to see me, as I was him, in the few times we met later in life. My condolences to the family.

No one was more outgoing, personable or genuine than Austin. He ran his barbershop like an orchestra conductor. He could cut your hair – and do it well – tell you a few stories, carry on a conversation with his staff and their clients, and greet everyone coming through the door, most of whom he knew by first name. He exuded energy, enthusiasm and an inexhaustible interest in everything and everyone around him.

We had St. Bon’s in common but he was a few years ahead of me (when it was still a high school).. He and most others of that cohort shared a confidence, assertiveness and grasp of the world that served them and their nascent province well..

He will be sadly missed. Condolences to Sandi and Nikki.

Sandy and family,

May he rest in peace.

Dear Sandi and Niki,
Sending you Love and Prayers to ease your heartache. Cherish the many wonderful memories of Austin, a life well lived. ♥️

A Thousand Winds

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

So sorry to hear of Austin’s death. Please accept my deepest condolences to the family.

Sandi & Nikki:
Wishing you peace, comfort, courage, and lots of love at this time of sorrow. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Sandi,

I am so sorry to read of Austin’s passing.. I first met him in the late sixties because you and my wife were nursing classmates at the Grace General Hospital School of Nursing. That among other things, resulted in my going to to his barbershop whenever I needed a haircut.

I remember very well the day in September of 1969 when our future wives graduated. That morning after the nursing parade, Austin and I went in his convertible to the airport restaurant for breakfast. The talk then was not about cars, boats or business. It was just Austin’s happiness over Sandi’s and my wife’s graduation and his enthusiasm in those heady days of the sixties of what the future might hold for us.

I never saw him again after that morning.. Our wives over the years met during reunions, but whenever I met Sandi, I would always ask how he was doing. My wife and I eventually moved to Southern California and except for a brief time in Texas, Austin and Sandi spent most of their days in St. John’s..

I never forgot Austin’s endearing personality and his kindness to me during those long ago years. How indeed could one ever forget such an indelible personality.

May the many precious memories he created for you Sandi and your daughter, sustain you during this sad time and during your future days.

God’s speed Austin . Rest in glorious peace my long ago friend.

I’ve known Austin for many years. Always a perfect & entertainer guy. Sincere condolences to his family. RIP

Austin and I were classmates at St. Bon’s. We lived in the same neighborhood Rabbittown growing up and.many a time met up for a walk to school.. He was a fun person to be around. In later years visiting his Barber Shop I would always comment to him ‘ still dying your hair I see’. His response was ‘ not me boy, sure your older than me ‘ always with a grin.. Now I know the difference. Lol You have had a wonderful life Buck and May you rest in Eternal Peace. Sandi and Niki please accept my sincerest condolences. As Austin will be sadly missed..

Sandi, Niki and family, I first met Austin when we both entered St. Bon’s in Sept 1951. Even at that tender young age he was a character, funny, talkative and kind. Sandi, Niki and family.
I have not seen Austin for probably 10-15 years because we now live on the west coast, but I know if we had met a few days ago, that smile and mischievous grin would have appeared on his face. You always felt comfortable in his presence.
My family and the Ryan barbers go back a long way. Austin’s dad did my first haircut….and Austin did the first haircut for both of my sons! Boating was his passion and any time we met, boats were the first topic. Innocent gossip followed. Lol.
I am so sorry for your loss and for the community’s loss of a real character and fine person. He will be missed.
Fair winds, my friend!
John

My sincere condolences to Sandi & Niki on Austin’s passing. I’ve been a customer of Austin’s for over 50 years. Coincidentally I was sitting in the chair at Austin’s yesterday when Sandi called the shop to say that he had passed. I remember as a young boy waiting my turn & reading boating magazines in the waiting area. Austin would then tell me the stories about his journeys. Always so much fun to hear. Niki cut my hair for many years too & I can honestly say that if you were in a hurry you could be in & out in 5 minutes. She was masterful at getting the job done. RIP Austin.

Sandi and Nikki,
I am saddened to hear of Aus’s passing. I have known him since school days and always enjoyed his company, his stories and outlook on life. The chats we had about sailing – him on power boats and me on sail boats – are to numerous to mention and they always brought pleasure to both of us. He was, as they say, a character, in the best sense of that word.
Fair winds and calm seas my friend.

It was either Bro ”sad sack” Walsh or Moss Quinlan who gave Austin the moniker “Bucco” at St. Bon’s. But who ever it was he was always affectionately Bucco in my memory.. I last saw Austin at the wharf in Trinity where we have a summer home and it was like he had never changed – that welcoming smile. Peace to him

Our love and blessings to the family and especially to Austin. We have known Austin since we were little as our Grandfather Herbert Bancroft was a barber with Austin’s Dad. Great chats throughout the years. Always a smile.

Sandi and family:
My deepest sympathy as you mourn the loss of Austin. It has been many yrs since we crossed paths but I always loved the wonderful stories he told. I believe the last time we saw him was on your boat in CBS on a beautiful summer day.
My God Bless

To Austin’s family,

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Austin. Anytime I was in his company he always made
me feel welcome, with his infectious smile that could light up any room.. I recall his witty jokes, his warm and genuine conversations, and his dance moves with Dot that could make anyone smile.

As you navigate through the sorrow of his loss, I hope you can find solace in the memories.

Sending my deepest condolences.

Sandi, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
