It is with deep sorrow and shock that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Barbara Shave nee Ward on April 16th, 2024, at the age of 82—a force to everyone who knew her.

Born in Rochdale, England, she embarked on a courageous journey to Canada in 1963, carrying with her the spirit of adventure that would define her life. Her strength and resilience in adapting to a new country and creating a life for her family in Newfoundland are a testament to her indomitable spirit.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and joy in her daughters, Claire, Tracey, and Jannine; her sons-in-law, Andrew Houston and Peter Lewis; her grandchildren, Liam, Matthew, Sarah, Hayley, and David; her sister, Joan Parkes as well as her best friend, Deanne Sinnott.  Each of them reflects a part of her enduring spirit and love for life.

An extraordinary woman, she found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her love for travel took her to places far and wide, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Later in life, she traveled with her children and grandchildren as often as possible. In the kitchen, her culinary creations were not just food but a manifestation of her deep love for her family, and every dessert was devoured with enthusiasm.

On the tennis courts and at the bridge table, she was not just a player; she was a vibrant presence, a strategist, and a friend. Her laughter and competitive spirit, which brought so much joy to these arenas, will be missed by all who shared these moments with her.

Her life was a beautiful journey; she was always on the move and always had a purpose. She was the heart of our family and the best possible friend. Her beloved husband, Gerry, who passed away in 2023, awaits her with open arms.  As well as her beloved brother, Denis, and her parents, John and Vera Ward.

As we bid farewell to our most amazing mum, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy will continue to live on through us. Her unwavering strength and zest for life will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.

A visitation and funeral will be held in her honor, where we will share stories, laughter, and tears, celebrating the remarkable woman she was.

The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-p.m. Friday, April 19th.

A service to celebrate Barbara’s life will take place on Saturday, April 20th, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carnell Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Heart and Stroke Association of Newfoundland.

Rest in peace, dear Mum. I hope you and Dad are

in heaven having a laugh and playing a game of tennis.

Jannine and family,
I am so sorry that I did not realize until today that your mom had passed. I should have been there to pay my condolences to you all in person. I apologize.
Your mom (& your dad) were amazing parents and so kind to all of us kids as we were growing up. I have so many fond memories of your mom’s amazing baking and times spent at your cabin and your house. She was always there with a smile and the enormous patience and love that is required when your home is set upon by a gaggle of teenage girls.
I know how close you were and how much you’ll miss her. I pray that the lifetime of love she and your dad poured into you and your families sustain you as you move forward.

Claire, Tracy, Janine and families, we were shocked to hear the news of your Mom’s passing. We met her and your Dad through a mutual friend before our girls were in school with you. It was only a couple of months ago that we met again, after not seeing her since our tennis years at Green Belt. She never changed. I’m sure the void you are feeling now will never be filled but rest assured she’ll be in your hearts forever. Treasure all the wonderful memories as you celebrate a life well lived. Unfortunately we are out of the Province but you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Tracey, Claire and family. I am so sorry to hearing of your mom’s passing. Thinking of you all.
Warmly, Kim

Tracey, Peter & Family, & extended Family members,
What a lovely written obituary which weaves a short story of a beautiful woman. Never having the pleasure of meeting her, I’m sure genetics finds its way in you and your children. As you gather to share stories of fun and laughter and Mum’s dedication, to you , may those pleasant memories comfort you in your time of grief.
Hugs Geri

Tracey and family……sending condolences on your mom’s passing. While I never had the privilege of meeting your mom, her beautiful obituary shows a life well lived and a woman well loved. May her gentle soul RIP.

Claire, Tracey and Jannine,
We are still in deep shock after hearing of your mother’s passing.. When we saw her recently she was as beautiful and vibrant as ever. I always admired her great hair and sense of style! She was a world traveller for sure, always looking forward to the next trip.
Barbara was a great hostess and a super cook and we were lucky enough to experience those qualities many times. She was a loving and generous mother and grandmother and I know she was immensely proud of you all. We considered her a part of our family that included our shared grandson Matthew.
We shared some wonderful moments with your parents over the years and have always remained friends. We will miss her a great deal.
We can’t express too deeply how sorry we are at the loss of your mother.
With love, Toni and Jim

My sincere and heartfelt sympathy on Barbara’s passing. A great loss to you all and a loss to others as well. I played tennis with her and loved to engage in conversation with her. She was knowledgeable in many things and a great listener. I am shocked to know she was 82 and I so wish she was here so I could tell her that.

To Tracey, Claire, Jannine, and all of your family – I am so sorry for your devastating loss. I feel so blessed to have gotten to know your mom and dad through the years as they welcomed all of your friends so warmly into their home on so many occasions – your mom sharing her amazing meals and kindness, and your dad with his very sweet smile and gentle nature. What a team they made! I so enjoyed chatting with Barbara as we got a bit older in more recent years, too, and I drew so much inspiration from her fearless spirit. She was full of life, adventure and possibility. And so sharp and beautiful (goes without saying with that impeccable hair and smart style!). But it’s her warmth, and kindness that I’ll most remember as Barbara always seemed to take a genuine interest in others. I will certainly miss those chats and moments and I feel truly blessed to have known her. Thinking of you all as you cherish every memory and the incredible love she gave.

Claire, Tracey, Jannine and family,
So shocked and saddened by this.💔I have known your mum and the whole Shave clan my whole life. My mom has often told me how they first met when I was a baby (and they were swimming lol over 46 years ago) and they have been great friends ever since. Your mum was such a wonderful lady who was always up for adventures and passionate about many things, but most of all, you, her beautiful family. I have so many wonderful and funny memories of our times together. Whether it was golfing, playing tennis, shopping, visiting North River/Florida/ Jarvis place, celebrating holidays, special occasions or where ever the adventures took us, she was doing it all in style and full of energy. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten. ❤️ Sending my love to you all.

Sincere Condolences to Barbara’s Family. I was so
sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. She was a lovely
person, and will be truly missed. May she Rest in Peace!
God Bless.

My Deepest Sympathy to Barbara Family ,also her dear friend Deanne .I met Barbara over the years and different functions and love chatting with her .My, thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this very difficult time .

Our deepest condolences to you all. Barbara was a wonderful lady with whom we always enjoyed a good laugh. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

The Montreal branch of the Lewis family is processing this shocking news.
Barbara Shave was a force to be reckoned with and we all see where some of Tracey strength of character comes from. As recently as this Easter, we enjoyed her presence in my dad’s home as she shared plans for the future and was part of a large celebration in the extended family.
My favorite memory of her was visiting her & Gerry’s condo in Tampa, circa 2011, while I was there for a medical course. They had me over on 2 occasions, spoiling me to a lovely meal twice. I saw the place that gave her and Gerry so much joy in this part of their lives.
We share in the sadness of the loss to Tracey, Jeannine and Claire.

Tracey, Peter & family,
I am sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Claire,Tracey and Janine and families,
Tuesday I lost a dear friend and the best motivator I ever had. Your Mom brought me back to swimming. We joined tennis together and she introduced me to curling.. We golfed together. As a Bridge player she set up a duplicate Bridge Club at the Yacht and Tennis Club in Florida. We played there once a week. Barbara, myself, Maureen McGrath and my sister Barb went to England with her for her sister’s 70th birthday and took in many shows and sites.
My three children Liam, Ferguson and Cailey will miss her also as our families were connected through swimming, Christmas and trips to North River and Jarvis Place. Last but not least, Paul took care of you girls when Mom and Dad went off to England . We had signed custody papers for you three if anything happened to your parents . That offer still stands if you are in need of a family or just some TLC.
Love always Peggy, Paul, Liam, Ferguson and Cailey

There is deep, deep grief among the Rochdale Wards. Barbara was a much loved cousin: ebullient, energetic, mischievous and playful – and so brave to go west and spread her wings. At her 21st birthday party at the Beach Hotel we almost brought the ceiling down as she led the dancing,. We pray for the family. May God grant Barbara eternal rest.
Vincent Ward.

Claire, Tracey and Jannine:

We were so sorry to hear this news. Your mom was a lady with an infectious laugh who brightened every room she entered. We have so many great memories of time spent together. We only hope that the wonderful memories you all must have will help you through this difficult time. We send our love to you all.

Heartfelt condolences to Barbara’s family and dear friend, Deanne. She was always delightful at our bridge games. So sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace.

Sending our deepest condolences to Claire, Tracey, Jannine and families on the passing of their wonderful mother and grandmother. We are grateful for so many lovely memories of the Shave family as our neighbours in the 1970s, as well as family time spent at their cottage in North River. Hold dear your memories and keep her always in your hearts.

Our deepest condolences to members of the Shave and Ward families. Barbara was a true friend for many years and we spent many good times together. We were shocked by the news of her passing and our prayers are with you.

The Shave family. I met your Mom shortly after she moved to St. John’s. Claire as her only child then. When I married, Barbara graciously let me borrow her wedding cake top. Your Grandmother Ward made the best trifle I ever ate. That was back in 1972. Times were not easy back then, nor money that abundant, but Barbara pushed through with determination, grit and the knowledge that all would work out for the best. Stubborn, you bet, but a LADY with an iron will who was loved and admired by all those who knew her and were lucky enough to call her a friend.. Sadly I moved away and we lost touch, but I will always remember Barbara (and your Dad) with a smile and grateful that we shared some wonderful times together as friends. May Barbara rest in peace. God Speed. HUGS.

To Barbara’s family:: Our sincere condolences 🙏 on the loss of your beautiful and vibrant mother, grandmother and friend, Barbara.. May she rest in peace. Joan Mifflen and lorne Janes

Dear Shave Family,
Memories of Barbara,
The devastating news of Barbara’s passing ( your mum) is still resonating with me. Little did I know in 1969 meeting Barbara on a flight to England with two small babes in our arms she would become part of our family..
Our families were connected through sports as the girls bonded with swimming and various other activities throughout their early years- visiting back and forth enjoying Barbara’s culinary skills. When my daughter Laurie was married Tracey a bridesmaid met her husband to be peter Lewis ( my nephew) at the wedding.. another connection.
So many memories of Barbara. Playing bridge in Holyrood, our family times is North River, and St Johns . Of course we always depended on Barbara for the dessert.. Barbara was indeed a role model- keeping herself active mentally and physically. She was a presence and she will be missed. Your Mum was a an inspiration and your memories of her will help ease your pain.

I am so sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing I have a lot of great memories curling and playing bridge with her may she RIP sending my condolence to all her family
