With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Bernice Janes nee Bruce. Predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Alfred James “Corp” Janes. As well as many loving family members and friends.

Leaving to mourn son Courtney Janes and daughter in law Jacqueline Casey of Golden, British Columbia; daughter Natalie Power and son in law Keith Power of Paradise, Newfoundland. Cherished grandchildren Liam Power, Emma Janes, Evan Power, and Ella Janes. Sisters Martina Cormier of Stephenville, Newfoundland and Stella West of Mississauga, Ontario. As well as a large circle of family, friends and colleagues.

Bernice was very proud of her family, faith, and heritage. In her early 20s Bernice left Newfoundland to pursue a nursing career in Western Canada, the US, and Mexico but she maintained a deep connection to her birthplace in the Codroy Valley. In the early 1960s she settled in Labrador West and raised a family. She was a strong resourceful woman who knew how to live life to the fullest. Always up for some fun, Bernice’s sharp wit and encyclopedic memory for “stories” provided many laughs. She thrived on picking berries, playing darts, and card games. She was a friend to many and carefully tended those friendships throughout her life. A woman of strong convictions, Bernice lived the principals of social justice long before it was politically correct. Bernice will be missed beyond measure.

We would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Tiffany Village for the excellent care and compassion given to Bernice and all her family. Words alone can never convey our thanks.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a mass to celebrate her life on Thursday, March 24, 11:30AM at Mary Queen of Peace Church, Torbay Road St. John’s, Newfoundland. With internment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NL West SPCA.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be
So he put his arms around you and whispered
“Come to Me.”
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands now rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
