It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of Clayton Penney, aged 87 years.  Clayton passed peacefully away at U.S. Memorial hospital in St. Lawrence on June 30, 2022, leaving to mourn a large circle of family and friends.

Clayton is predeceased by his parents, Oliver and Hazel Penney; his wife of 40 years Florrie (nee King); his brother Oscar; and his sister-in-law Nellie.  Also his brother-in-law Charlie (Ruth) King, brother-in-law Clayton King, and sister-in-law Shirley (Herb) LeGrow.

Clayton will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his partner of 20 years, Mary Hodder; by his children, Craig (Sharon), Karen McCallum (Barry), and Todd (Lauren); and by his stepdaughters, Irene (Jerome) and Bridget Hodder.  Clayton will be dearly remembered by his grandchildren: Sarah and Laura McCallum, Ava, Jackson, and Ruby Penney; by his sister-in-law Madeline; by his brother Allister; and by his sister Judy (Dick) Shortt.  Also leaving to mourn, his sister-in-law Evelyn King, and brother-in-law Gerald (Cynthia) King.

Clayton was born and raised in Adams Cove, Conception Bay North, and moved to St. John’s as a teenager.  It was there that he met Florrie, a career nurse whom he married in 1960.  Following a brief period in Winnipeg, Clayton and Florrie moved back to St. John’s, where they built a home and raised their family.  His career in Appraisals began in the private sector, before he went to work with the provincial government, and retired as a senior manager from the Department of Municipal Affairs.

Clayton will be remembered by many for his passion for sailing.  His interest in “the golden age of sail” began at an early age, and it became his dream to own his own sailboat.  One of his greatest accomplishments was the building of “Penneyfive”, the 38-foot vessel that came to life in the family’s very own backyard.  This was a labour of love; the result was a work of art that was a testament to his skill, ingenuity, and perseverance.  True to her name, “Penneyfive” was enjoyed thoroughly by the five members of the Penney family.  Her greatest adventure was her year-long trip down the eastern seaboard and into the warm Floridian waters in 1995, captained by the skipper himself and his first mate Florrie.  Whether it was a vacation sailing around Bonavista Bay, a weekend in Brigus, or just puttering on board, Clayton’s time on Penneyfive brought him joy and peace.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the wonderful staff of U.S. Memorial, whose care and dedication for Clayton over the past two and a half years is appreciated more than words can express.

The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Monday July 4th, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  The funeral will take place at Wesley United Church, 101 Patrick Street, on Tuesday July 5th at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person, with the link available above.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Clayton’s memory to Wesley United Church, the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, or a charity of one’s choice.

To Karen, Craig, Todd, Mary and loved ones
“Each time we embrace a memory, we meet again with those we love … for the heart never forgets.”
It was with much sadness to hear of Uncle Clayton’s passing. Sending you all my heartfelt condolences from across the miles and oceans.
When I was a little girl, it was your Dad who taught me how to cut a watermelon so I could eat it without making a mess of myself. I still smile to this day whenever I see watermelon, as I remember your Dad’s bright, boyish smile with such fondness.
Wishing you God’s comfort during this time xx

Mary and family, beautiful service for a wonderful man. Condolences to all. RIP Caption.

Karen, Craig, ,Todd and family,

So very sorry to hear about your Dad .
When I think of them , we are reminded about what friendship should look like, the many wonderful times and memories that have been shared .
I was blessed to have Florrie as a supervisor and both of them as sailing companions for mom and dad .
Your dad helped us sail our first sail boat down from Chester to Dartmouth many years ago.
When I think of him I’ll always remember his adoring smile and sweet nature.
This chapter has ended for him but I do hope that he is up their sailing with the rest of his buddies on the silver seas !
You will miss him . Hold on to the beautiful memories that will embrace you with time . It is the hardest to loose the ones that are the easiest to love !!!
God bless
Our love and hugs for you all .

While Lorraine only met Clayton later in his life, I had known him for many years. We first met professionally in the world of property assessments. Later I spied a sailboat being constructed in the backyard of his St. John’s home, so I was not too surprised to meet him again, this time at RNYC . His pride in Penneyfive showed – she was always pristine! But then, Clayton took pride is all that he tackled in life.
We know recent years were not kind to him from a health perspective, but as we remember him, Clayton was a talented, positive, kind and gentle man..
We know you will miss him greatly. We will remember him fondly. Fair winds and following seas, Clayton, and safe passage to your final destination.

John and Lorraine
