Obituary

Passed away unexpectedly at the Health Sciences Centre on September 28, 2023, Dr. George (Peter) Buffett Curtis, at the age of 94 years.

Predeceased by his loving wife Ingrid in 2016; sister Ruth (Jack); and brother Arthur.

Leaving to mourn devoted children Ingrid (David Jeffers), Linda (Greg Jackman), and John Curtis (Trina); loving grandchildren Stephen Jeffers (Courtney), Lauren Jeffers (Cliff), Jessica Jackman, Courtney Rose (Ryan), Melody Curtis; and great-grandchild Elliot Burke.

Born in Grand Bank, NL to Dr. Ira & Gertrude Curtis, attended Memorial University then graduated Dentistry from McGill University.  In later years, he completed Forensic Dentistry with US Army in Washington which became an invaluable service to the Province in support of the Ocean Ranger disaster.  He also served as the Dentist for HMP in St. Johns, NL as well as practicing Dental Surgeon for the Health Sciences Complex, Janeway Childrens Hospital, Grace Hospital and St. Clare’s. One of the more interesting and lesser known facts was Dad travelled to both Cuba and Morocco as Joey Smallwood’s friend and personal travelling dentist. Retiring at the youthful age of 71 years.

Throughout his life, Dad enjoyed many activities such as his sailboat “Salt Peter”, salmon fishing on the Gander, Humber & Pinware rivers. He also enjoyed hunting for moose & caribou with his buddies particularly in Kaegudeck, NL. Spending many years in St. Pete’s, Florida and cruising the world with wife Ingrid and friends. Most of all his greatest love and joy was simply spending time with his family.  His presence will be greatly missed by so many.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at Tiffany Village on Wednesday, October 4 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

In my youth, I have great memories of Dr. & Mrs. Curtis as treasured friends of my parents including Dad and Dr. Curtis’ legendary moose hunting expeditions! Later in life I would run into your Dad from time to time and he was clearly zoned in – sharp, youthful, interested and interesting. A proud legacy indeed!

To the family,
I was so sorry to hear of Pete’s passing.
I must have been one of his earliest patients and was with him until he retired. He made me a golden bridge which was much admired by other dentists when I lived away.
Of course as a member of the Elhers family he was pretty well a member of the Chalker family too. I always enjoyed his stories and warm wit..
My deepest sympathy to you all.
