It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Oliver, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother. Predeceased by her mother Elizabeth (Meadus) Snelgrove, father Walter Snelgrove; husband Leo Oliver; brothers Wilfred Snelgrove and Rex Snelgrove; son-in-law Joe Power and sisters-in-law Joan Snelgrove (Ross) and Rose Snelgrove (Rex); nephew Keith Snelgrove and niece Jill Snelgrove; and companion Colin Haynes.

Leaving to mourn with heavy hearts her children Janice Power (Otto Warren), Jerry Oliver (Florence), Steven Oliver and Jane Delbene (Paolo); brother Ross Snelgrove and sister-in-law Sylvia Snelgrove; grandchildren Allison (Brian Chafe), Mark (Suzanne), Heather, Ryan, Sadie, and Daniela; great grandchildren Matthew, Cameron, Laura and Kenzie; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Born in Grates Cove, Betty moved with her widowed mother and siblings to St. John’s and graduated from Grace General Hospital in 1952 as a nurse, a profession she dearly loved and served for many years in Public Health. She married her husband, Leo, that same year and they went on to have four children. In the 70s they purchased a business and operated Oliver’s Store on Logy Bay Road, a well-known landmark to many. While they spent most of their winters in Florida, their happy place was at their ‘cabin’ on Hodgewater Line where Betty’s prized vegetable garden occupied much of their time. They also enjoyed many a Saturday night kicking up their heels at the ‘Duffett’s’ place with a wide circle of life-long friends. In her later years, Betty and partner Colin spent their winters travelling to Australia, enjoying the warmth of the Gold Coast. By any account, Betty was a free spirit and lover of life, making the most of everything it had to offer.

The family will be accepting visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, February 22nd from 2 – 4 PM and 7 -9 PM.

Please note that Carnell’s Funeral Home is a nut free building due to a staff member with a severe nut allergy. Thank you for your understanding.

The funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, February 23rd at 11:30AM.

To all of Betty”s family my sincere condolences.
I first met Betty many years ago as a school nurse when I was teaching. I remember how cheerful she was and respectful to the children. Our paths crossed many times over the years and it was always a joy to chat with her especially about our Grates Cove connections. In the past year we spent more time together when I visited my sister Ella at Lanes. When my sister was in hospital and before her passing in October I received many phone calls from Betty to ask how my sister was doing and another call when my sister passed. Betty was always upbeat and kind and I am so sorry to hear of her passing. To her children, a mother’s love is a blessing.
