Frank Ryan

March 7, 1942 to December 4, 2020

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Francis Joseph (Frank) Ryan of St. John’s on Friday, December 4th, 2020. Predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Ryan, his sister, Mary Elizabeth and brothers Bill and Jim Ryan.

Leaving to mourn, his loving wife, Lynn Burry, his children, Andrew (Kelly Ryan), Matthew, Kimberly (Scott Clunk), Laura (John Tipton), Frank (Meighan Saunders), grandchildren, Donald, Jonas and Zac, his brother, John Ryan (Peggy Sue), sisters, Maureen (John Wood), Rosemary, Mercedes (Al Knudsen), Joanne (Barry MacKinnon), sisters in law, Catherine Ryan and Grace Ryan and a large circle of family and friends.

Frank was well known in the St. John’s business community and his work included the restoration of the Murray Premises and the construction of the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre. He was also involved in politics, managing the successful campaigns of John Crosbie and former Premier, Brian Peckford.

Frank will also be remembered for his philanthropy and support of organizations like the Vera Perlin Society, the Autism Society, the Gathering Place and the Sealers Memorial in Elliston.

Frank was a former director of the Waterford Hospital, former Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Health, former board member of CN and during the 1980’s, Frank served as the Chair of the committee that oversaw the redevelopment of George Street. More than anything else, Frank was known as a very good friend, a decent person and a generous man who was dearly loved by his family and respected by all who were close to him.

Frank’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Palliative Care Unit in St. John’s for their exceptional care during the last week of his life. A special thanks to Dr. Louise Rogers. Thank-you to all the people who have expressed well wishes over the last six months. Your kindness during this most difficult time has been very much appreciated.

Cremation has taken place and funeral arrangements will be announced when COVID-19 restrictions allow. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Gathering Place, or to The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.

Lynn, John and the Ryan family,
If I had to choose a single word to describe Frank Ryan it would be wisdom.
I have known Frank for nearly 40 years and his wisdom, intelligence, and urbaneness both inspired and motivated- it was always a joy to converse with Frank.
In Michael Harris’s book “Rare Ambition- The Crosbies of Newfoundland’’ Harris wrote “Frank Ryan, a dashing promoter with a hint of actor Michael Caine about him …” – yet another wonderful description of Frank.
Lynn- you and Frank were an awesome team and the mutual love and respect you had for each other was quite something to behold.
We will all so miss Frank.

He was a mentor to many and assisted his family and friends throughout his life – he was the” go to guy “ indeed .
He possessed a charming personality – he had great empathy for the human condition – he was warm and engaging. .
He gave back to his community in many ways with his time and resources.
He loved his family and they loved him.
