Passed peacefully away on December 18, 2020 surrounded by his loving family, Frederick (Fred) Vivian, P. Eng. (Retired), FEC, aged 94 years. Pre-deceased by his parents — Deborah and Frederick G. Vivian; siblings Cecil Vivian and Mabel McRoy; and brothers-in-law David Martin, Barrie Strang and Jack McRoy. Left to mourn are his wife of 68 years, Eva; their four daughters – Lynn (Glenn Book); Janet (Jim Walsh); Ann (Gerry Beresford); Sharon (Larry Nolan); his eight grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Allison Book (Julien Lariviere), Jessica Walsh (Steve Lichti), Meaghan McCaw (Jesse), Jennifer Book (Stephen Galutira), Kathleen Walsh (Brad Bonnell), Laura Beresford (Frank Cesnik), Jane Walker (Jordan Lawrence) and Ian Walker (Megan Burt); and his two great-grandchildren Charlotte McCaw and Henry Galutira. Also left to mourn are his sisters-in-law: Maxine Vivian; Joan Strang; Anne Little (Gray); Betty Parsons (Abbie); Karen Martin (David Tough); brother-in-law Wayne Martin (Marilyn), many nieces and nephews, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.

Family meant everything to Fred. Fred’s beloved wife, Eva, was truly his queen. He thought the world of his four daughters and their families, and took great joy in welcoming grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Fred taught his four girls that they could do anything, and be anything; and they believed it. This belief was passed on to the next generations. Eva eloquently describes Fred as “a wonderful husband; a wonderful father; and a wonderful man”. A generous and kind man, Fred mentored, encouraged, and supported many people – both professionally and personally – throughout his life, quietly helping others to make better lives for themselves and their families. Fred was a proud Feildian and a life-long learner who highly valued education in all its forms.

Fred was a man of great faith, always guided by Christian principles, and was very active in his church community. He was baptized, confirmed, married and will be buried from the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. His love of music was nurtured as a member of the choir for over 60 years. He served on vestry, as Rector’s Warden, representative on Diocesan Synods, the board of Queen’s College, and oversaw the construction of the new St. Mary’s on Craigmillar Avenue. He was recognized in 1993 by the Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador for his outstanding contribution to the life and work of the Diocese.

Fred proudly wore his iron ring. Fred and Rex Parsons founded the engineering firm, Newfoundland Design Associates Ltd. He graduated in 1949 from Nova Scotia Technical College and retired after a successful and rewarding career in 1999. Fred was designated a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 1978. He received the Award of Merit and Life Membership from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland in 1998 in recognition of having made an outstanding contribution to the Engineering professions and the community.

Fred’s family wishes to thank the staff of St. Clare’s 4East and 4West for the compassionate professional care shown to Fred. A very special thank you to his caregivers from TLC who helped him make the most of every day at home. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation on Sunday, December 20th from 7:00-9:00 p.m.; and Monday, December 21st from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

A service of celebration will be held at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Craigmillar Avenue on Tuesday, December 22nd at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. Due to Covid-19 health measures, there will be a limited number of attendees permitted at Fred’s service. Those who wish to request attendance can email the family at gberesford.nl@gmail.com. Responses will be provided once family members have been accommodated. For those unable to attend, Fred’s funeral will be live-streamed. A link will be provided on the Carnell’s Funeral Home website (www.carnells.com). Fred was a generous man and supported many charities. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Fred’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. To sign the memorial guest book or to send a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com.

Janet, Sharon and family,
So sorry to hear of you Dad’s passing. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Just recently learned of Fred’s passing. He was such a kind man and he was very supportive of Heritage New Perlican; both him and Eva. I always enjoyed conversations with Fred. Always upbeat and full of encouragement and a true gentleman. My husband Bill and I send heartfelt condolences to the family.

Lynn and family: Sending condolences to you and your family on the sad passing of your father. His obituary demonstrated a very fully lived life. He sounded also like such a kind man. Take care. your friend , Gladys Schofield

I was very sad to hear of Mr Vivians’s passing . He was one of the kindest ,most patient neighbourhood men on O’Reilly St. He always had a twinkle in his eyes.
The Simmons and Vivian families grew up four houses away from each other. Mr Vivian would drive me with his daughters to school in the early 70’s. I remember good natured arguments about who was the best hockey players Boston or Montreal. Many a morning this slow poke held up the car ride without any fuss. I remember many a Sunday night running up to see the Ed Sullivan show away from much noisier Simmons household. The Vivian family household was much quieter lead by Mr and Mrs. Vivian.
My final strong memory was the day in Ann’s and my apartment building when someone let off fireworks
In the stairwell. He calmly stated our building was unstable and not to lean on our 22nd story balcony..
He always kept his family safe and in those early days he kept me safe also.
Thanks Mr Vivian for being so kind to us all. He will be missed by us all. Take care . Love Kathy Simmons

So sorry to hear of Mr. Vivian’s passing.
I worked at Newfoundland Design in the late 80’s, and remember him as being professional and caring, and proud of the work and projects of the NDAL team. He always had a kind word, and a warm smile.
My sincere condolences to Mrs. Vivian and his family. He was a true gentleman.

Eva and family,

Sincere condolences to the Vivian Family. I was so happy to see him at the 175th anniversary of his school. What a wonderful gentleman! All he was will surely shine on through generations. “Non moritur Cujus Fama vivit”

To Eva and family

My sincere sympathy to you all on the passing of Fred.
Fred’s stirring obituary vividly paints the picture of an exceptional and accomplished man,. successful in diverse areas of life.
As well as Eva’s evocative “a wonderful husband , father.. and man.”, his “quiet” encouragement and support of many people both professionally and personally’ , illuminates the rich, unselfish inner quality of Fred’s character.

I am the brother of Rex Parsons .Fred’s long time partner in Newfoundland Design Associates. I first remember meeting Fred during university summer break employment with Nfld Design Associates. That was several 1960’s summers. of mostly surveying projects.
Later in life we would meet occasionally mostly at socia and otherl events involving brother Rex.
Fred was always very welcoming and encouraging to me.and I was always happy and uplifted to see him. He personified a real gentleman,; curious and, full of goodness and decency.

Fred certainly could not be forgotten.and I vigorously applaud him and his wonderful life.

John Parsons.

So sad to hear about uncle Freds (or the Cookie Monster as we called him as children) passing. I have so many fantastic memories from my childhood with both Fred and Eva and all my much older cousins. I can always remember my father talking about Fred in such reverence, and he was clearly a true role model that shaped my fathers life, and subsequently mine. Although I do not get back to Newfoundland to visit as much as I would like, I always try to make it a priority to visit. I will miss him very much, I know I will think about him and Eva as I raise my own daughter. Love Ian

To Eva and family

Both Jean and I were sorry to learn of Fred’s passing .We have both known Fred and Eva for more years than we can count .He was a great engineer and friend but alas was not a very good golfer .He dearly loved his weekly “skins “ games at Peridia and one day after another not too successful game he asked me if should take some lessons .I then asked him how old he was and when he told me that he was 85 I advised him that there wasn’t enough time . Well after a great laugh and now with the benefit of hindsight it looks like I was mistaken . He would have had another nine years to prove that with lessons and practice this taskmaster would have been able to take his game to a level that would have pleased him to no end .
We will miss you Fred

Ann, Janet, and all the Vivian families,

Words cannot express how we feel when we get news of a death.. Yet a death at what should be a festive time seems even more “out of place” . Losing an important figure such as your father really helps to focus on the values which he instilled in you all – family, faith, and love. Celebrate and treasure the memories which you have of a lifetime of encouragement and support, and try to bring those things forward so that others may benefit from his teachings and your examples. May your dad rest in peace and rise in glory.

Eva and Family,
So very sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. I have fond memories of Fred and Eva when I worked at St. Mary’s Church. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all..

My condolences to the whole family for their loss.
I don’t think I ever met Fred or most of his family, but have fond memories of Janet and Sharon. Having taught Sharon and taught WITH Janet at Bishops College, I can well imagine the kind of person he must have been.
Although it’s been more than thirty years, I still remember them with great affection and admiration.

our sincere condolences to all the Vivian family, especially Eva and his 4 daughters Lynn, Janet, Ann and Sharon. We have such fond memories of Fred. He was such a kind and caring person. For any family emergency, Fred was the first one there to offer support. Cathy especially, remembers his ongoing support after her parents passed away.
Eva and Fred were always so welcoming on our trips back to St Johns. Bruce and Cathy also fondly remember his significant role in the toast to the bride at our wedding.

To Auntie Eva, Lynn, Janet, Ann and Sharon

It was very sad that I heard of the passing of Uncle Fred. My condolences are with you all at this difficult time as we remember the amazing man that he was. He has certainly a wonderful man who gave so much to others. There are so many fond memories of the times spent together as families when we were growing up and camping together in different parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. I will always remember my weekend trips to stay with Auntie Eva and Uncle Fred when I was younger and the simple joys of looking at the pictures in his engineering and construction books of big tractors and construction equipment and hearing stories about how these big construction projects were built. So fortunate to have shared these moments with such a wonderful Uncle. May you Rest In Peace.
