Obituary

 

Passed peacefully away at his residence in St. John’s, Frederick Wallace Lakin, aged 91 years.

Predeceased by parents John Henry (Harry) and Martha (Young); brother Henry; step brother Albert Field (Ethel) and Leslie Field; sisters, Olive Tucker (Richard), Thelma Dagg (Jim), Agnes Summers (Charlie) and Joy Walters (Lloyd).

Leaving to mourn his wife of 70 years Sarah Dora (Carberry); son Greg (Brenda), grandson David and son John.

Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Lakin’s passing. My husband Eddie and I have such fond memories of you and Mr. Lakin while attending university in St.John’s. You were both so very kind and wonderful to us. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Take Care.

Christina and I are so sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. He was a true gentleman, of the old school. I remember first meeting him when he came to size up our house plumbing. “We won’t do you wrong,” he said in his courtly way. I understood it to be his attitude to life. We won’t easily forget him. Fred was a great pal of my father. Growing up, I would often see him chatting it up with my Dad and my Aunt Doris at their shop on Freshwater Rd. He was always so kind to us kids. So very sorry for your loss.

Sorry for you loss. Though I personally have not seen Fred in a number of years I know my Father never missed a visit when he was in town. Their friendship never faded through time and Fred will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace now, his job is done.

The Lakin family, We were so saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. He was a wonderful kind man. How often he got us out of trouble at Circular Road and Frog Pond in Topsail. Never too busy to answer our call. Always had his sense of humour.

Dora and family , Pam and I were saddened to hear of Fred’s passing . I will always remember Fred’s conversations over the years with regards to starting my vegetable garden, he was a wealth of knowledge. We would reminisce of days gone by when he worked many times alongside my father Fred and grandfather George . Our sincere condolences to the Lakin Family. We first met Fred in 1985 when we started work on the road near the graveyard in Spread Eagle to build cabins along the side of the pond. We paid many visits with our neighbors (the late John & Doreen Hounsell) to the Lakin property. Fred was a wealth of knowledge and always willing to lend a help hand.

S o very sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. Although I hadn’t seen him for some years, he was a man one didn’t easily forget.. He was always a gentleman, kind and courteous. I remember him from my inspection days and also the good times and conversations we had at the annual IPE dinner and dance., Fred always took great interest.. May he rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to the Lakin family. Fred was a good friend and neighbour to our family. I still remember the bottle mussels he use to give my dad. He loved them.

What a special gentleman Fred was , kind and generous of that there is no doubt . He shared his knowledge and wit freely ,both Herb and I feel privileged to have gotten to know him . His cherry cake was always a special treat especially for me (Sheila) as it came with a smile and a hug .

Terry & I are so sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. We lovingly addressed him as the “mayor” because he was instrumental in so many positive changes in Spread Eagle, his happy place. Our children respectfully called him “the whopper man”, as he always had whopper candy whenever they paid him a visit. Fred was a wonderful cabin neighbour with a wealth of knowledge that he was always eager to share.
RIP Fred. You will be missed.

I met Fred & Dora a number of years ago at their cabin in Spread Eagle, and so looked forward to subsequent Summer visits with them.
