Georgina Clarke (nee Squires)

October 22, 1937 to July 27, 2023

Obituary

On July 27, 2023 the light of heaven led the way home for Georgie.  Passing away peacefully in her sleep at age 85 with her husband Wallace, daughter Karen, Son-in-Law Greg, and her Grandson Justin attending her bedside to say good-bye.  It was the last of many gatherings of family together with her; gatherings that made her life rich in joy and love.

On other occasions it was Georgie who would attend on her family.   She was always ready to pour a cup of tea and prepare you something to eat.  If you were in the house at 12:00 pm, you could be sure that Georgie was in the kitchen preparing food and boiling the kettle.  You could count on being called to “com’mon” to the dinner table where there was always an invitation to “have some more.”

Georgie grew up on a farm on Dogberry Hill in St. Phillips, and in her teen years she taught children on Bell Island.  She was married for 65 years to Wallace Clarke her sweetheart from grade school.   They settled in St. Philips raising two children, while Georgie ran the community store “Clarke’s Convenience” for 29 years.  Later in life, she became First Officer on the Georgie Girl, a forty-two foot Yacht moored at the CBS Yacht club under the command of her husband Captain Wally Clarke.  She loved to fish, ride on the skidoo, and camp at the family cabin in Terra Nova which she continued to do well into her 80s.  But most of all she loved her husband, children and grandchildren, sisters and brother and families.  She was always thinking of them and asking about their welfare right up until the last minutes of her life.  She will be dearly missed and her memory treasured.

Georgie was predeceased by her parents William and Lily May Squires and sister Edie Tucker and brother William Squires. Left with a lifetime of fond and loving memories, her husband Wallace, devoted children, daughter Karen Osmond and her husband Greg,  son Craig and his wife Erna, grandchildren Matthew Osmond (Fai), Timothy Osmond (Julie), Justin Osmond (Chelsea), Jared Osmond (RaeAnne), Avery Clarke (Lauren), Nathan Clarke; 10 great-grandchildren Myah, Ben, Brynn, Isla, Jack, Sam, Imogen Georgina, Arthur, Bella, and Brian.  Georgie will also be fondly remembered and missed by her sisters Emma Aitken and Olga Batten (Dave), many nieces and nephews and a large circle of extended family and friends.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service celebrating Georgie’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 27th, 2023 at the St. Phillips Anglican Church. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

Wallace and family, for those of us growing up so close to Clarke’s Store, learning of Georgie’s passing has been very sad. Regardless of the name on the Store, we have never stopped saying we are going into Clarke’s, but most often we say “we are going into Georgie’s.”

Whatever mischief we may have been up to, once we entered the store, Georgie’s presence automatically transformed us, to our best behavior. Our best behavior was displayed for our Parents, Grandparents and Georgie.

God’s Speed Georgie

Our condolences on your mother’s passing. May you have many good memories of better times. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

Dear Wallace,Karen,,Craig, Emma,Olga, and all your families. Deepest sympathy to you all. Growing up on Dogberry Hill Road I knew Georgie’s family well. Emma and I were good friends as were Olga and my sister Carole. Georgie , I got to know as I got older., and felt very close to here in St. Philip’s these past years since retirement. They were regular parishioners at the 8::30 services in Church and attended many of our functions. It was at a Church supper that I last talked with her. She was always so sweet, told me she loved seeing me in Church., and loved taking Communion. Wallace, that night I joked with you both about being hard of hearing, how much fun it must be talking with each other. Although you both laughed, I’m not quite sure you understood what I said. And you both always smiled a lot. Wallace i know your heart is broken, but I believe you will meet again., in the nearer presence of God. May our wonderful Jesus comfort you and bring you peace, and may dear “Georgie Girl” rest in peace and rise in glory.

Wallace, Karen, Craig, Please accept my condolences on the passing of your Wife / Mother. She was a wonderful lady. God Bless.

My deepest sympathy to Wallace and all Georgie’s family. We grew up very good friends on Dogberry hill Road but drifted apart over the years. Later when we did meet each other we always had a chat and gave each other a hug. I know she will be deeply missed by her loving family. Rest in peace Georgie, GOD BLESS.
