Gerald Winston Quinton Russell

November 30, 1948 to October 18, 2023

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gerald Winston Quinton Russell on Wednesday October 18, 2023, at the age of 74.

Gerry was a caring husband to Bernice for 51 years. He was a loving father of Stephen (Becky) and Deborah (Andrew), and a proud Poppy of Julia, Kilian and Luke. He also leaves behind his only sibling Glenys.

He was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Hubert and Eileen and raised in the town of Gander, Newfoundland. His post secondary schooling took him to St. John’s, Newfoundland where he studied Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He spent his career working as a manager for the Newfoundland Telephone Company.

Gerry had a lust for life and will be remembered for his big smile, big heart and willingness to help anyone in need. He was an avid runner, dancer and lover of music. He was known for his piano playing and the uncanny ability to play anything by ear. He was the protector of his family, a man who most often put his own aspirations aside to ensure the success of his loved ones.

We will cherish his memory in our hearts forever.

Please join us at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, October 24th, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm to remember Gerry, share a story and pay respect to this great man.

Bernice, Stephen, Deborah, Glenys and family If one had to pick the perfect picture of Gerry for this sad reason you nailed it. This is the image of Gerry on the first day I met him and the same expression mirrored every time I was with him over the years. Gerry was a good man, a great husband, a very proud father, brother and a good friend. That expression “good man” is one that many of us recognize from parents the generation of our parents as meaning exactly that. My father used that expression and his father used that expression as well which told those hearing it a full story of the quality of the man he was. It was reserved for a few and not a general phrase. I was shocked to hear of Gerry’s sudden passing and my sincere condolences to all of you. For me that photo tells his story, his being and his desire to help not hinder. God’s strength to all of you but your lives, our lives, have been better for the time spent with him.
