Jean (Hatty) Shinkle (née Haines) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 19, 2022 at the age of 95.

Hatty was born in Wraysbury, England on November 4th 1926, the youngest child of Frank Lancelot Haines and Gladys Ryder Richardson. She was married to Eugene Shinkle (aka Shink). Hatty is remembered with love by her daughter Eugenie, son Tim (Anne Kisthardt), grandchildren Harry and Georgina, stepson Matthew (Joyce), step-daughter-in-law Martha, step-grandchildren Malindi (Sean), Geoffrey (Emily), Jessica (David), David, Nadine (Paul), Melissa (Brad), Amanda (Dwane) and step-great-grandchildren Dafydd, Alexander, Ella, Ida, Leo, Abram, Sophia, Catherine, Bradley, Elle, and Alethea. Hatty also had a wide circle of close friends and acquaintances – of special note are Antonia McGrath, Joan Butler, and Deborah Rehner.

Hatty first met Shink in Montreal, Canada. They married in 1959 and started their family in Vancouver, British Columbia, later moving to Manotick, Ontario, where they spent many happy years. They relocated to Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, in 2003. Following Shink’s death in 2007, Hatty lived independently until the age of 93, when she moved to Tiffany Village Retirement Living in St. John’s. Many thanks to the staff and caregivers at Tiffany for looking after her so well.

Hatty was an outstandingly capable individual and a true trailblazer. In 1945, she was the first woman ever to be awarded a degree in Engineering from the Regent Street Polytechnic in London (now the University of Westminster, where her daughter is a Professor). Though she never practiced professionally as an engineer, her creativity and ingenuity were evident in everything she did – whether it was building a stone wall in the Manotick garden, sewing, cooking, upholstering furniture, creating beautiful flower arrangements, or making handicrafts for family and friends. She was also a wonderful writer, as the many recipients of her richly descriptive and witty emails and letters will attest.

Apart from her family, Hatty’s greatest pride and joy was her garden. An exceptionally talented horticulturist and garden designer, Hatty could turn the most unlikely patch of earth into an oasis of flowers, fruit, and vegetables. She left behind a beautiful garden in every home she lived in. Her endless energy and enthusiasm, her organisational skills, and her mastery of gardener’s Latin will be remembered with great fondness by the Friends of the Garden (FOG) at the Memorial University Botanical Garden, of which she was an active member for nearly twenty years.

Hatty was a full-time mum for most of her working life, but managed to fit in about three lifetimes’ worth of volunteering during this time. In Manotick, she was an active member of the St. James’ Church ACW (Anglican Church Women), organising the annual church bazaar, and devising a legendary recipe for Christmas puddings, which were made in the hundreds every holiday season to raise money for charity. She was also active in the Kiwanis International, acting as secretary for the Ottawa Kiwanis music festival for many years, and organising the catering for members’ dinners. Her meatloaf will be remembered by the hundreds of Kiwanis members who looked forward to it every month.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Hatty’s memory may be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, or to the Friends of the Garden (FOG).

Truly a life well lived and a fount of knowledge. We miss you at the Gardens.

Hatty was my father’s first cousin and my godmother. She was a wonderful godmother, despite for most of her life, and mine, she lived thousands of miles away in Canada. We met, we wrote, we chatted, and as an adult with my own home, she came to stay. We shared a love of walking, flowers, and the environment. Memories of our walks together are particularly poignant the more I learn of her work in the Botanical Gardens of St Johns. I know she will be sorely missed in her community, and she is hugely missed by me. There is a very large, godmother sized hole in my life. God bless you Hatty and thank you for being such so special; a great communicator full of wit, interest, and compassion. With much love Sue xxx

I met Hatty when I joined the ACW at St. James church in Manotick. So many amazing memoires. We still make 240 Christmas puddings from what I like to call the Pudding Bible which Hatty created over 30 years ago. That is quite a legacy.
She was a wonderful lady and I feel very privileged to have known her.
My heartfelt condolences to her family.

I first met Hatty when she with her husband Shink moved to Chamberlains.. I have many wonderful memories of Travels, luncheons, card games, berry picking, , volunteer in the Botanical Gardens etc. She had many talents, and had an artistic way in her garden wherever she lived. She is never far from my thoughts. RIP Hatty. Joan

Hatty has been a member of WAMUN for many years now. She would regularly, helpfully and cheerfully attend many of our groups, especially the Saturday Walking Group. I loved walking with her as she shared her botanical knowledge along the way.
She is greatly missed already.

I met Hatty shortly after I went to work at the Botanical Garden over 20 years ago. The first thought I had when I got this sad news was ‘a life well lived’. Hatty your many talents, firece determination, willingness to pitch in whereever needed, work ethic and consideration for others knew no bounds. You were an inspiration to all who knew you. May God bless you and your family during this difficult time. Have fun in the heavenly gardens. You will remain in my thoughts and memories with love.

Hatty was our neighbour in Manotick for many years on Van Vliet.
Her gardens were legendary and her artistic touch wonderful. Her energy was unmatched.
Our condolences.

Dear Hatty, You are never far from my thoughts. Together with Gwyn Barrowman, we had so many wonderful mirthful conversations at MUN Botanical Garden, Tim Walsh rolling his eyes at our silliness or more often than not, joining in. You are missed dear friend! My condolences to your family.

We have so many happy memories of dear Hatty both from Manotick and Conception Bay South.
Our thoughts are with her extended family and friends as they share memories of a life well lived.

On behalf of my staff and I, we extend sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ms. Shinkle. She enjoyed visiting my coffee shop with her good friend and we had many lovely chats. It was only quite recent that she was in.. We hope you find comfort in your memories.

I met Hatty in her late 80’s when she joined an exercise class that I teach. It was great fun to have her with us in class. I enjoyed knowing her immensely.

We have many wonderful memories of a beautiful lady. We met her at Tim’s when she lived in CBS and looked forward to sharing a coffee hour with her every day for many years. We also had birthday parties and wonderful meals and a game of cards at her house which she enjoyed playing cards although she said she didn’t know how but always managed to win the prize. We had a lot of laughs over the years she certainly was a remarkable person and will be missed by so many people. Know our thoughts and prayers are with you all this time.

On behalf of all members of the Friends of MUN Botanical Gardens I can say that is was an honor and privilege to have known and worked with Hattie. Our condolences to all her family. We will remember her always.

It was a privilege to meet Hatty while I was visiting my Mom (Rita Rowe) at Tiffany Village. The last time I saw and spoke with Hatty she was heading out for a walk with energy and determination.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your dear Mom and friend.
