Joan Bown (O’Neill) passed peacefully away on December 20th, 2023, the eve of her 80th birthday. Those lucky enough to have known her will remember a classy, intelligent, and beautiful woman.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, a dedicated wife, and a loyal friend.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Gertrude O’Neill; and brothers, John O’Neill and Kevin O’Neill. She will be cherished and remembered by her husband, Thomas Bown; daughter, Carolyn Morgan (Aaron Morgan); granddaughters, Mara and Audrey Morgan; brother, Robert O’Neill (Sheila O’Neill); sister, Maureen Hodder; sister-in-law, Sandra O’Neill; nieces and nephews; and a large circle of dear friends.

Joan had a successful and rewarding career at Memorial University. She lived a full life enjoying her early days travelling Spain with her husband and close friends.  In her later years, she spent the winters in Florida and summers at her cabin in central Newfoundland.  She also loved to paint while looking out over the ocean at her home in Conception Harbour.

Her daughter, Carolyn, was her pride and joy. Not a day went by without a phone call and an “I love you” shared between them.  She always went above and beyond to provide her daughter with the best experiences that life has to offer. She will be forever remembered as Carolyn’s ‘person’.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff of 2NE at Pleasant View Towers for the compassionate care they provided.

To honor Joan’s wishes, cremation has already taken place.  Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Friday, January 12th, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 12:00 p.m.

The funeral for Joan will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person, with the link available above.

Donations in Joan’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Carolyn and Tom, our sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of our beautiful Joanie. I (Dottie) will forever treasure the friendship and closeness we shared for over 40 years. We made many wonderful memories, first as co-workers then as close friends. Joan had many friends….I feel very fortunate to have been one of those. Beautiful, talented and smart describes our Joanie to a tee. Tom, we both loved the times we spent with you and Joan over the years…. always full of fun and adventure.
