John William Gary Foster

March 22, 1962 to July 5, 2023

Obituary

John William Gary Foster passed away suddenly Wednesday July 5, 2023 at Lanes Retirement Home, St.  John’s, Newfoundland.

Gary was born March 22, 1962, and had just turned 61. He was a loving son to Isabel (Parsons) and Cyril Foster; a younger brother to Keith (Faye) and Karen (Craig); an uncle to Kali (Jon), Zachary (Minami), Bryan (Katrina), Amy; and grandniece Ava. Gary also leaves to mourn his cousins Marilyn, Rob and Dave as well as a large circle of family and friends.

Gary was predeceased by his mom and dad; grandparents Joseph and Edith Foster, Annie and William Parsons; aunts and uncles Will Parsons, Lillian and Keith Jones, and Harold and Muriel Foster.

We would like to thank the staff of Bonaventure and Lanes Retirement Homes, The Hub, The Button Shop and the Brain Injury Association. You always had Gary’s best interests at heart and were true friends to him.

Gary graduated from PWC class of 1980 and lived on 93 Airport Road. He loved gardening, vacationing in Glovertown, participating in sports, and watching his favourite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gary worked at the Airport Inn, and the Button Shop. He was a member of The Hub, and often could be found socializing, playing darts and pool with his friends. To keep fit Gary worked out with his personal trainers at the Y. Gary was a member of the Brain Injury Association of NL, so we ask in lieu of flowers to make a donation to them.

There will be a celebration of life held on Friday July 21, 2023. Family, friends, and all who knew Gary are welcomed to attend. The service will be held at 1 pm in The Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, NL.  From 1:30- 2:30, downstairs at Carnell’s we will honour Gary with his lifelong tradition of afternoon coffee and a cookie. He will be interred at 3 pm at the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Road.

Please sign the memories book online or at the service.

Thank you.

I am saddened to read of Gary’s passing. We both attended Brinton Elementary school, MacDonald Drive Junior High, and Prince of Wales Collegiate. Gary was from childhood remarkably kind – I remember his broad smile and warm personality. I remember also after his accident how his devoted mother cared for him. I met them while I worked at Cape Spear as a university summer student years after school days – Gary remembered me as did his Mom, who was enjoying her time with him while they were out for the day. He was bright and energetic – charismatic as ever. My deepest condolences to the Foster family who cherished Gary so well.

Sorry to hear of Gary’s passing, I came to PWC half way thru the year i@ PWC in 1979 And Gary was one of the few that welcomed me from Labrador.. I was shocked to hear about Gary’s accident during the year, but he thought me something in Life that Life is precious and you don’t know what could happen..
From Gary’s accident I learned that everyday is special and after losing my son, Gary actually helped me thru some really tough times- Gary was so instrumental and he didn’t even know.. so thanks for the friendship.

I was a classmate of Gary at PWC Class of “80., he sat in front of me during English class. I remember him as a great fun loving young man with a swagger of confidence. Although I did not know him well at school, I often thought of him through out the years. I was very sad to hear of his passing. To his loving family, who I am sure cared for him greatly over the years, I send my sincere condolences.

Very sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. Gary was a tremendous natural athlete and well-liked and respected by all of us who were his classmates at MacDonald Dr Junior High and Prince of Wales Collegiate. Condolences to the family on your loss.
