Obituary

With heavy hearts and a lifetime of wonderful memories we announce the passing of Jonah Benson at Saint Luke’s Home on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the age of 90. Predeceased by his wife Olga, parents Lydia and Newman Benson, and brother Ern.  Leaving to mourn daughter Valerie Benson (Jason Byrne); son Stephen (Colleen); grandson Riley Byrne; granddaughters Amanda and Michaela Benson (Jon Lee); sister Geneva (Ross Ivany), as well as a number of other relatives and friends.

In 1973, Jonah founded Woodland Nurseries, a strong family-run business that he remained active in until recently.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Fairhaven Unit at Saint Luke’s Home for the care and compassion shown towards him during his stay.  Special thanks to staff Hannah, Bill, and Dana.

Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, September 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, 1 Westerland Road, on Wednesday, September 20 at 11 a.m.  Jonah will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Olga at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Cancer Care Foundation.

I just heard of your Father’s passing.
My sincere condolences to you and your family.

Deepest condolences to you Micheala and your family. I know you thought so fondly of your grandfather and will certainly miss him. . Thoughts and prayers are with you.

On behalf of my Mom, Ruby Anstey and myself I would like to send deepest condolences on the loss of Mr. Benson. Mom lived across the hall at Bishop Meadon Manor and spoke kindly of him.

I will always remember uncle Joe’s smile! Both Joe and Olga will be in my heart forever. I sincerely wish you both love and strength on this next chapter of your journey.
