It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph Greene announce his passing on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the Chancellor Park Long Term Care Home.  He was 80 years of age.

Words cannot express our deep appreciation for the special care and love shown to “Papa Joe” by the entire staff during his time there.

Joseph was born November 29, 1942 to Miriam and Barton Greene of Raleigh, NL, the fifth of eight children.  Upon finishing school, Joseph worked in the fishery with his father and brothers.  Although the work was hard, those early years held many fond memories.  In the early 60s, he went to Goose Bay, Labrador.  There he worked for 10 years as a supply clerk with the U.S. Air Force, and there he began his career with Bell Aliant.  He retired in 2000.  While in Goose Bay he met, fell in love with, and married Evelyn, his wife of 59 years, and their only child Cheryl was born.

The greatest and most important event of Joseph’s life happened when he committed his life to Christ from his hospital bed in July 2021.  He was prepared and ready for this day.  Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the Life.  He that believeth in me tho’ he were dead, yet shall he live.”

Joseph loved puttering around the garden, collecting coins, all things western, movies, books, and music.  He loved animals especially cats.  He loved company, visitors to his home and bedside, meals around the table and playing games.  He loved watching the Blue Jays and Team Gushue.  Joseph did not play sports but he was a champion dart player winning many trophies.  His greatest love was his family, whom he spoke of every day until he couldn’t speak anymore.

Leaving to mourn with many precious memories his wife Evelyn, daughter Cheryl (Stephen Wiseman), grandsons Dustin and Aaron (Brittany), granddaughter Rachel (Stephen Kettle), and precious great-grandson Theodore (Teddy), brothers George (Kizzie), and Freeman, sisters Melina, Belinda, and Maisie (Richard), sister in law Irene, many nieces, nephews, and large circle of extended family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents Miriam and Barton Greene, parents-in-law Alfreda and Roland Hynes, sister Ida, brother Lester, sister-in-law Barbara, and brothers-in-law Stanley Dawe and John Andris.

Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday, January 23, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 1 p.m.  Joseph will be laid to rest awaiting the resurrection in the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.

Donations in Joseph’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, or the Canadian Bible Society.

I am very sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. I had the privilege of knowing Joe through work . Very quiet and yet observant . Such a calm spirit to talk to . He always had lots of wisdom and wit to share . I will remember him always .

Evelyn, Cheryl and Stephen, so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. I remember well, his quiet demeanor and seemingly constant smile. Praying that God will strengthen and sustain you as you grieve your loss.

“Aunt” Joe, you were a big part of my childhood. Thank you for all the good memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you aunt Evelyn, Cheryl and family.

Evelyn, my heart is with you and your family. I have enjoyed every moment spent with Joe and yourself over the past year. As I have told you many times your commitment, care, and compassion did not go unnoticed. You are super woman. Joe knew it too, every time I said your name that sweet grin came on his face. I will miss that grin!

Joe and I had so many chats, laughs and songs; he’d say he was more of a listener than a singer but man, could he talk. Just the best. I’ll never forget my visits and I will cherish the memories dearly. I am beyond grateful that we found our way into each others lives.

If you need anything going forward you know where to find me. Thank you both for making my life brighter!
Love, Erin
