Obituary

Love is a flower that blooms so tender, each kiss a dew drop of sweet surrender. Love is a moment of life enchanting, let’s take that moment that tonight is granting.

Louise was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother – and a favourite aunt to many. As an officer’s wife, she traveled broadly and had occasion to dine with dignitaries and royalty. But equally fulfilling to Louise were Sunday dinners with family, her Friday night dates with her husband Gordon, and watching her backyard birds.

Louise will also be remembered for her lively sense of humour. Her quick-witted banter will be missed by many.

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Louise Barnes, at home after a short illness. Predeceased by Gordon, her husband of 58 years. Left with rich and wonderful memories are her children Don (Trudy), Nancy (Milo), Peter (Shelly), Heather Smith (Rob), and Carla Gaulton (Brian); grandchildren Caroline (Zack Hawco), Stephanie, Duncan, Kerry (Marcus Perry), Rosie (Elijah Mabana), and April; great-granddaughter Kali; brother Harold Janes (Pam); brother-in-law Aubrey Rogers; sisters-in-law Joan Sears and Connie Winter (Jim); and her best friend of more than 60 years Jean Bemister (Bill). She will also be missed by a large circle of nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the staff of 4 North B at the Health Sciences Centre and the palliative care services team, especially Nurse April Adams, Advanced Care Paramedic Michelle Petten, and the paramedic teams, for the exemplary care and kindness shown to Louise in hospital and at home.

Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial will be held in July.

Our condolences to the family!
When i joined my family in Newfoundland in 1988, Rob and Heather were already an item, and I recall many visits to Gordon and Louise’s for wonderful meals and great company. Always a tale to be told and plenty of laughter. I always felt like one of the family. Louise’s welcoming spirit and beautiful smile were as heartwarming as things could get. Quick with the wit and a consummate cook. Great memories.

To the family;
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your mother, Louise. I had the tremendous honour of being a friend and colleague to your father. I additionally have many fond recollections of seeing them both during their Friday date nights at the Hotel Newfoundland, sharing a small pitcher of martinis and conversing. Their mutual love and admiration could be seen from across the room. Two lovely people who were meant for each other.

Nancy & the Barnes family;
Wishing you peace, comfort and courage. I am thinking of you and your family and wish for you thoughts of all the good things your mom did for you to help carry you through this difficult time. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Nancy, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mom was such a nice person. She was very welcoming to myself and Emily to some of your Sunday dinners. Take care my friend.

For the Barnes family, I am very sorry for your loss. She was a great lady, who always made you feel welcome. She also made the best shortbread cookies in existence. She will certainly be missed.

Louise married my brother Gord when I was 12 years old. She has always been part of my life. We shared many lovely times together. She and Gord had such a marvellous marriage and relationship. They were a true example of what the love of a married couple should be. Louise will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sending love to Donnie, Nancy, Peter, Heather, Carla and their families. She will always be with you.
