It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our beautiful mother Marion, who died suddenly but peacefully on January 17.

Marion was born in Chapleau, Ontario to Stuart and Lillian Chapple. After several moves, the Chapples ended up in Hamilton where Marion graduated high school and later worked as a labour and delivery nurse. Once a nurse, always a nurse she told us, but after marriage to David in 1965 she spent the next years raising their children. The family moved to Dunville in 1970 and then to St. John’s a few years later. When her children became involved in figure skating, so did she – at the club level and later as an official for competitions. Since she was an accomplished seamstress, she also sewed many skating dresses for competitions and ice shows. Upon retirement she and David enjoyed travelling around the world including visiting their children overseas.  In St. John’s she was active with St. Mark’s church, serving with the altar guild, visiting nursing homes and as a member of the Women’s Friendship group. In her free time, she loved to read, do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and play scrabble.

Marion is remembered by many for her wit, cheerful disposition and generous spirit. Left to mourn her passing are all who knew her – especially her children Susanna (Carey), John (September), Kathryn (Scott), and Paul (Mary), as well as her two granddaughters in France (Catherine and Sara), her three grandchildren in Australia (Tara, Noah and Cadence) and her brother Tom (Elizabeth). She was predeceased by David, her husband of 56 years, brother Bruce, and nephew Cameron.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to Cheryl and Alex Faseruk for their generous care and support to all of us during the last few years.  We are also profoundly grateful for the exceptional care and love shown by the staff of Lanes Retirement Living during the past three years.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 on Friday, January 26 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, 203 Logy Bay Road. Reception to follow.

We lived next door to Marion and David on Taylor Place for many years. Wonderful neighbors. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.

Susanna and family,,

I was so fortunate to have known your mom in my early years during school and now having served tea wth her in the kitchen at church. She always had a smile especially when she spoke of you and your siblings. I hope all the wonderful memories of such a devoted mom help you all through this difficult time and in the days to come.

All our love
Susan and Darrell Gover

Very sorry to learn this. I’m Marion’s cousin from Sudbury. We visited quite a bit when we were 12 and took a trip together to Washington, DC. Many years later we got together in St John’s where my wife and I got to meet David for a weekend.. Much love to all of you. She was a dear soul.

I, too, was saddened to learn of Marion’s passing. I got to know her first as a “staple” person I’d see at my daughter’s skating competitions – a volunteer I knew she was, but it took me years to realize she was an Accountant (we are known more recently as Data Specialists). I’ve had the pleasure of learning from Marion in the back rooms and on the drives to and from the competition sites (in all sorts of weather conditions!) as a fellow Official. Always cheerful, always calm, always logical when approaching a ‘challenge’ with marks, always the paper recycler, always a proud Mom and Grandmom, Marion will be missed by many in the skating community. I am out of the country and unable to visit in person – please know I am thinking of you all.

So sorry for your loss Susanna, Carey, Catherine and Sara.

We were so sorry to hear about your mother’s death. Marion was one of the first people we met when we started going to St. Mark’s Church. She was on the Prayer Writing Team with us. We are so glad we got to see her in church just a few months ago. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

I was so sorry to read about Marion’s death. The obituary was right on when it spoke of her cheerfulness, wit and generosity. She certainly will be missed.

To Marion’s family, my heartfelt condolences to you at this most sad and difficult time! I met your mom on a few occasions having worked for your dad for 14 years! I know how dedicated she was to you all and her commitment to the figure skating world was immeasurable! Unfortunately, I won’t be able to pay my respects in person but know I am thinking of you all! I know how proud your mom and dad were of you all!

So sorry to hear of Marion’s passing. I knew her from water fitness and many of us at the pool this morning shared memories of her kind, gentle, warm presence. Wishing you peace and comfort through this loss of your dear Mom.

Dear Susanna, Kathryn, Paul and John, we’re so sorry for your loss (and ours). We consider ourselves blessed to have known Marion (and David). Her friendship, love, humour and strength will be in our hearts, memories and photos forever.

Susanna, Kathryn, Paul and John,
God’s Peace be with your mom, she was a rock. Always cheerful, always smiling, a warm and generous person. A little skater doll she made with the POW SC outfit has graced our club office for many years now, keeping her with the club she put so much time into. God rest her soul, my thoughts are with the family.

So sorry to hear of Marion’s passing. I knew her through the Prince of Wales Figure Skating Club, to which Marion devoted so much of her time + energy. I also knew Marion through St. Mark’s Church. I send my condolences to all her children + their families.

Dear Kathryn and family may you remember all the beautiful memories as only I was there for a few months she was one of my favourite who humour and whit I’ll sure miss god bless xo Tracey-Lynn Kennedy (pca)
